The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Going 16-Bit in Fan Remake

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is ditching its 3D graphics with a fan made remake that will transform into a 16-bit SNES game.

<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132994-Speed-Runner-Beats-Ocarina-of-Time-in-Less-Than-19-Minutes>The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is easily one of the most important milestones in 3D gaming, providing players with a fleshed out world they could traverse and explore to their heart's content. It was a landmark moment for video games that left players so enamored that many would claim that it still hasn't been surpassed today. It only makes sense then that some of those same players would launch an effort to transform the famous game into a 2D throwback.

That, at least, is the aim of the OOT2D, an ongoing fan project working to recreate Ocarina of Time in the style of its 16-bit predecessor <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/a%20link%20to%20the%20past>The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The group's goals include recreating the game's <a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovKPDncxLVg>soundtrack, day/night cycle and even <a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F54t8K0af0o> its cutscenes, all in the style of a SNES game. The project itself isn't very far along yet, probably owing to the fact that its founders are creating everything from scratch. Even so, a playable demo is already <a href=http://oot-2d.com/?p=1>available for download.

Just speaking personally, while their objective strikes me as a being a bit odd considering what <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/the%20legend%20of%20zelda>Ocarina of Time represents, I'd be lying if I said that the current pieces of finished product don't look cool. As much as I love Ocarina, I have a tremendous soft spot for A Link to the Past. The idea, in turn, of being able to experience one of my favorite games in the style of another one of my favorite games just holds some undeniable appeal.

So... someone new has set out to do Ocarina of Time in 2D? Has it been around 7 years since the previous attempt met its demise?

(Now what are the odds of it getting a cease and desist from Nintendo?)

Wait, but there already is a 16-bit version where the Hero must get 3 macguffins then get 8 more macguffins to save the Princess and Hyrule, as well as stop Ganon. We called it A Link to the Past. XP

In all seriousness, this looks cool. But I agree with the notion that this may receive the big stamp of "Cease and Desist." Especially since this is the Zelda franchise which is still both popular and not being put on shelves for 10-25 years at a time. *glances at dusty closet filled with the F-Zero IP, Ice Climbers, Eternal Darkness, etc*

So how long before Nintendo issues a cease and desist?

It's going to happen, the question is when.

Okay, roll up, roll up! Place your bets here!

How long do YOU think it'll last until Nintendo shuts it down?

If you're right you might even win a nice pair of used pantaloons!

We were hardcore back in the day, it was 8 macguffins to get after the initial 3 macguffins.

Whoops, forgot that. Been a while since I fully played through Ocarina of Time in 2D A Link to the Past. Should really do another run through...but then I have to fight against Moldorm again! >.<
(still the most annoying Zelda boss to date if you ask me)

If the guys are having fun doing it, that's great, but I don't really see the point. OoT was one of the first "awesome-3D-look-at-these-huge-open-spaces" game. You're basically killing the thing that made it what it was.

On the other hand, it does look so damn cute ^^

Looks good the only I problem I have is that they announced it when it wasn't finished, with these fan projects wait until you are done so you can at least complete the project without getting shutdown, that way even if you release it and you get C&D someone else probably would have backed it up.

Mother 4 hasn't been shut down yet......... Until that project either gets shot down or released, I'll remain neutral towards fan-projects like these.

This is, what, the 13th OOT2D project to crop up since the original went down? It didn't happen in 03, it's not gonna happen in 14.

Nintendo doesn't mind projects involving the IPs they rarely use most of the time. But for the IP that they use a lot, like Mario and Zelda, they order Cease and Desists much more. As others have said in this thread, this isn't the first attempt at something like this, and every other attempt has ended with C&Ds from Nintendo.

Looks neat and all... but I bet Nintendo's gonna be assholes about copyrights and shut this down... *SIGH*

Why are you talking about it before it's done? Enjoy your cease and desist letter.

maybe now Arin will stop bitching about it
OT: it sure is ambitious, I wonder if it will play like its own thing or if it will go full-on link to the past
hope it's the former, I never really liked how link to the past played
