The Lord of the Ring's Rivendell Recreated With 200,000 LEGO Bricks

LEGO builders Alice Finch and David Frank recently completely a custom recreation of Rivendell using more 200,000 pieces.

Back in the sweet days of yesteryear it didn't take much to make me feel like an accomplished LEGO builder. One Christmas for instance, my parents got me this <a href=http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QuQYhMxQv-w/TSk4AV0ENPI/AAAAAAAAAjQ/ywHF55UOts8/s1600/6090-1.jpeg>castle set that took maybe a day tops to build and lord, if I didn't think I was a demigod of plastic construction after I'd pieced that together. As with most of the naïve delusions that once governed my life however, the internet has since halted any further thoughts of myself being some sort of LEGO savant.

After all, how proud of yourself can you really be over putting together a castle with an instruction booklet when there's folks like Alice Finch and David Frank building cities drawn straight from Middle-Earth? The two recently spent the better part of a year piecing together a massive recreation of Rivendell, based off of the version shown in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film series. The duo's replica, overall, measures 10 feet by 5 feet and contains some 200,000 LEGO pieces, many of them custom ones purchased from BrickLink. In short, it's a tad larger than The Lord of the Rings sets you're going to find in the toy aisle at Wal-Mart.

This, of course, isn't Finch or Frank's first LEGO project. Both, in the past, took part in a collaborative project based on Hobbiton, another Tolkien location. Finch has also done a recreation of complex castles. The two chose to build Rivendell in part because they believed it to "the ultimate challenge."

They've set it in the wrong time period. Where are the Fellowship? God damn it, now they'll have to do it again. :(

That is stunning, simply stunning. Every time I see something of its like, I want to live on Middle Earth even more.

My god, this makes me wanna buy lots and lots of legos.
Same here, I'd love to try and build a project of this size on my own if I could afford the plastic.

Copycats! [http://www.brothers-brick.com/2012/08/23/rivendell-captured-in-lego/]

They've done a fine job all the same though.

In other news, a man recently constructed a sandwich using two breads.

(Sorry, "Legos" has always been a serious pet peeve! It's a nonquantifiable noun, y'know.)

Damn, that's really impressive. I'm glad they included an interview with it too.

Also, this:

If you were talking about him using two different kinds of bread (like rye and wheat) your sentence would make perfect grammatical sense.

On topic: I wish I had that variety of Legos IRL. At least I have Lego Digital Designer...

Thank you "LEGOs" always annoys me.

This design however, made from over 200 000 LEGO pieces, is fantastic and makes me want to play with my old LEGO so much.

It's impressive. But I can't be the only one who thinks the end result looks completely hideous, can I? Those colours, oh God!

You know what annoys me? "LEGO". It is merely stylized as LEGO in its logo and in some branding, however, the company is The Lego Group and the line is called Lego. Lower caps there.

That's not Rivendell. Rivendell is way way bigger.

This is just a miniature.

So, you're saying it's only a model?

OT: 200.000 pieces..dear god. Besides what people build with tons of lego, can you actually imagine the amount of money they had to spend to actually get that many bricks to build it? Like that one life-size X-Wing that got built a couple months back.

This far in and no 'Lego-las' jokes yet? tsk tsk.

As impressive as it is, am I the only one who has a sadistic impulse to demolish it? A swift flying kick and watch all those pieces shoot off, or even a huge watermelon dropped right on top! Maybe dab a few blobs of jam around the place and watch ants colonize it.

Well I'm impressed. It always amazes me the kind of things people can make when they have the time, skills, and materials, something which I admittedly have little of this this regard. Ah well...

Yeah, the patterns on the rooftops make them look like gaudy Christmas sweaters.

Indeed,

OT: Well it looks like that guy that did the Arkham Asylum lego build just got one-upped. Next, I want someone to build to-scale every set piece from the original Star Wars trilogy from start to finish all on the same board.

Damn the Danes! They know we want the raw plastic and are packaging it in tiny sets for premium prices!

Got to keep an eye out in thrift stores to get the bulk boxes people are getting rid of.

OT: Minecraft, Lego... I'm sure this stuff is easy when you apply the boundless energy inherent in the bodies and minds of hardcore Tolkien Fans. Once again I wish I had the patience and passion to create something so cool.
