it became annoying because of the small, senseless things they did like uncalled for formations, or not allowing me to have a cellphone at the school break area.
A lot of these "senseless" things in the training phase are simply to test your ability to obey and follow orders. Some people really have a problem with that; but it just comes down to you saying "Fine, I'll do what I'm told." In Navy bootcamp, they focus a lot on the way you fold your uniforms, keep your locker, and maching in formation. It seems silly to do these things as training to be on a warship, but it has a bit of purpose. That doesn't mean the system could not be improved, IMO. I wish the military branches were more hardcore about punishing and kicking out those that don't want to follow rules - then we wouldn't have to play these silly childish games.

LOL I know what going before the mast means, and I'm kinda leery how that is supposed to be effective. Since most people called before the mast seem to be repeat offenders.
Just an explaination for those that don't know. Most of the people I see go up aren't repeat offenders. It seems like lately the place I'm at now just looks for any silly reason to make an example out of someone. This seems contradictory to what I said above, but when your boss screws up and you take the fall - that's jacked up.

I have a standing offer from the Navy to join the Nuclear Power school, but I don't think I will unless I really need the money.
They tried to push me into that field, and sometimes I wish I had done it simply for the money. I would rather be in a field I enjoy though; and that should be your big decision on which job you pick. For the love of God, do your research about different job fields before you just sign up. If you are still interested in the nuke field, they have some nice reenlistment bonuses. This is from an email I just received:
60,000 DOLLAR AWARD CEILING
RATING / NEC / ZONE A / ZONE B / ZONE C /
NUC / 3384 / 4.5 / 5.5 / 0.0
NUC / 3394 / 4.5 / 5.5 / 0.0
Basically saying you can get up to $60,000 for reenlisting after your 1st enlistment (if you have one of those NECs - job field codes), and I'm sure there's an enlistment bonus for those guys right off the bat. Don't be blinded by the money though - if you're hating your job, you're going to be pretty miserable. Talk to some people in different job fields (there are forums for this) and do a few searches online.
