Quite simple, just a game you found not that good but not that bad either.
For me it's The Simpsons Hit and Run for the PS2, humorous on occasion and workable controls but missions similiar and boring.

Half Life 2.

I'm not saying that just to spark any hatred, but I was honestly amazed at just how average it was after all the wonderful things I heard about it.

That and Halo, but it kinda goes without saying at this point.

Agree with you on that for me it has to be Prototype it had some good moments but for me no replay value and that is what I count as a average game for me .

Hmm. The most average as in most mediocre, or as in the most generic? Well, I'll answer both. I can only think of 360 games, since I've probably forgotten far better contenders for this title from the PS2 or PS era. But, then, if I could remember them after that long, they wouldn't exactly be average, would they?

For most mediocre, I'll say Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires. I think that's right. Might have been 6, but who cares? It's pretty generic too, but, I mean...a game has never provoked less of a reaction from me. I've liked other Dynasty Warriors titles as a guilty pleasure, but Empires was just...functional. There was literally no substance to it. So much so that I can't call it bad. There was enough variation in characters to keep me playing longer than I should have, but I don't remember a single distinctive thing about it.

For most generic, as in the game that is the most like everything else, or the least distinguishable from any other game, there's more than one contender. For simplicity's sake, I'll choose Ninety Nine Nights, though. N3 was a God Of War ripoff set in a Lord Of The Rings world filled with Final Fantasy XII characters and it played basically like Dynasty Warriors with a hint of Onimusha.

Mind you, I'm not including tie ins to movies or licensed games in this, because, if I did, I'd be here forever, simply trying to remember anything at all worth remembering about them. And anything that provoked even the slightest reaction from me, or had even the slightest bit of redeeming fun value when played with someone else is disqualified for being memorable.

I would honestly say Halo. I pick the games I buy carefully, and Halo was the one that hit "average" in every department, especially after playing some astounding, and some horrid shooters.

If "average" means mediocre then Halo. I get the feeling Halo is going to be mentioned a lot....

The Orange Box.
I got it for $20, and after playing everything on it, I can say, without question, that it was the most average buy I've made. Everything about the games that people praised and glorified I found to be horrifically average.

a tie between Halo and Dead Space both boring uninspired games, that are just so utterly bleh...
Edit: oh yes and I almost forgot Fear it's possibly one of the least scary horror games I've ever played, not to mention how poor the story is and how token the gameplay was... just Bleh...

Shit like

NHL 2005 (PS2), Lost Kingdoms (Gamecube), and Colosseum: Road to Freedom (PS2) spring instantly to mind.

Final Fantasy VII, definitely. It's not bad, it's just boring. There's nothing to it and the characters are for the most part pretty wooden.

Far Cry 2, got it for free so no complaining, and it was mildly fun but it's just the most average game that I have.

Me too, mainly because it had the audacity to claim it was Next gen and combat evolved then it just gave us the same generic alien backdrops, the same over played weapons (with new skins and names but the same effects ultimately) and said "here is your next generation shooter" and all the sheep needing a new trend to follow called it a God and declared war on anyone who said it wasnt the greatest thing since the invention of cheese.

For my own personal inclusion:

Mass effect 2...

haha yeh right, thats a masterpiece.

no seriously, I would have to say Overlord on the 360.
it was just such a generic mediocre game that I felt like sobbing each time I forced myself to justify the £10 purchase by playing it.

Its got some nice graphics and the maps are detailed and so on but the actual combat, story and concept simply tanked.

Your meant to be this big bad ass overlord who brings death and fear to the world, then they give you a morale choice system so you can be the good guy if you want then they make all the bosses villains?

I wanted to run around murdering the innocent, burning down their villages and raping their women while fighting off bosses such as Heroic knights and Wise sages.

Instead I ended up spending most of my time farming essence for my imps then wondering why the bosses were more evil than me.

EDIT:

I think the let down thinking now was I went into it thinking it would be the RPG / hack n slash version of Dungeon keeper 2, a genuinely sadistic game that will appease even the worst jerk off.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The game was pretty fun for a little while, but then it got dull. The entire game was FUN, and then suddenly boring. Like a roller coaster.
