The New Nvidia Titan XP is Here, and It's Glorious

The new Titan XP takes it place at the top of the graphics card food chain.

The Nvidia Titan series of graphics cards were introduced as an ultra-high end super-powerful solution to people with more money than they know what to do with. Unfortunately, the 10 series [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/167555-Nvidias-GTX-1080-Goes-on-Sale-Sells-Out-Everywhere] sort of made them obsolte, by providing comparable power for a much more reasonable price. But rest assured, those of you who enjoy dropping more money on your PC than your car, for Nvidia has just revealed the Titan XP, the glorious top of the graphics card food chain.

The XP is available right now from Nvidia.com [https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/products/10series/titan-x-pascal/], and will set you back a wallet-busting $1,200. Here's what you'll get for your dollar:

12GB of GDDR5X memory running at 11.4 Gbps
3,840 CUDA cores running at 1.6GHz
12 TFLOPs of brute force

Additionally, for the first time ever, the Titan and other Pascal-based cards like the 10 series, will now be compatible with Mac OS.

It is at this point I really wish AMD would get its head out of its ass and work harder to make its cards support GPU rendering so I can stop buying Nvidia. I keep hearing how they are working personally with companies get develop official support for their cards but then nothing materialises. Only a few natively support them and the ones that also support Nvidia cards tend to run faster on them (some claim it is a glitch in the compiler of OpenCL 2.0 or something). That is the only thing preventing me from switching squarely over the AMD right now.

Someone who does not know what I am talking about will say that I would be wasting my money on this card not realising that GPU rendering either crashes or slows down immensely when the card runs out of VRAM so the more the better. I am happy with my current setup but these bizarre business decisions by Nvidia as well as the price creep of their hardware has me really tepid for the future. At the very least I hope AMD can kick Nvidia's ass in the price to performance ratio to bring down the costs overall.

Currently The GTX 1080 Ti is on parity with [http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html] the TITAN X, and is half the cost, with only seven months' gap between releases.

Given this, the next Titanium/high-end 10 series model should hit the same benchmarks before Christmas, for half the price. The 1080 Ti is fairly similar, physically, to the Titan XP. 12 billion transistors, only 2 extra streaming multiprocessors. Obvs it's going to be beastlier in the bandwidth arena, but unless you're a hardcore gamer who also happens to be the lead animator on the next Pixar film, and you want to stream everything over Twitch all at the same time, it's hard seeing who this card will cater for.

Unless you're rich enough to want to be ahead of the whole world by one quarter of a framerate per second, for the next few months.

If you already own a mac, you can clone the hard drive to get a hackintosh running.

Not exactly breaking into an massive untapped market then.

But i suppose its the thought that counts.

Apple claim the next Mac Pro will return to modular components from the current soldered together dustbin and it will release early next year. So Nvidia might be doing this in anticipation of that.
