Last night Valve added a couple of new items to the Mann Co store. One of them being a $100 wedding/engagement ring (shit you not, it's $99.99).

At first I thought there is no way more than a few people are going to buy this. But after playing for a bit, a notification popped up saying that someone gave and in turn someone else accepted the ring, as kind of a psuedo-virtual engagement type thing.

Then the shit storm started. These notifications started popping up every single minute. I didn't mind this and honestly thought it was kind of sweet/cute but everyone on the server I was playing on lost their shit and got really irate over the entire thing. What are your guys thoughts on this and how much freaking money do you think this will net valve over the next few weeks?

EDIT: And someone just spent $100 to do this with it...

Son of a *****.

Why the hell didn't I think of this!? Infinite money, within my grasp....no mooooore D:

But honestly this is way, way too stupid to reasonabally exist. I mean, dead gods, this only exists to troll people's credit cards reasonabally. You can't even equip the damn things or the diamonds (SWAN DIVE) you get from them, they just sit in your (and the recipent's) inventory.

Oh, and "The Something Special for Someone Special was contributed to the game via the Steam Workshop, under the name "Engagement Ring". "

Kudos to the bastard who submitted this. They will be rolling in royalty money.

I think its sweet. And if as a couple, you'd prefer a lot of nerds knowing you were getting engaged over having a +$1000 engagement ring, its a surprisingly economical choice. After all, its the engagement ring that's the painfully expensive one, not the general use wedding band.

And really, if it weren't so expensive, using this digital item as an engagement ring would be a bit tasteless, in general.

I mean, I'd be pretty mad if someone proposed to me with a digital ring, but gaming isn't in my top life priorities.
To each his their own, I suppose.

Valve are offering them. People are apparently buying them. What more is there to say?

Sure, it's kind of crazy, but it's also harmless.

I would assume most people who bought this would have done so just as a sweet gesture. Or if they did actually propose, they had a real ring and this was just something extra to do ontop of that.

All I can say is this is perfectly timed for a certain holiday, and while $100 for a digital item is waaay more than I'm willing to pay for anything I can't touch, feel, or wear, who am I to judge those that do.

Eh, It's valve. They seem to have made "selling people useless fluff" into an art form. :p
No shit, I just got back into TF2 a month ago after taking a year or so break. Now I've ended up giving myself a 10 dollar weekly allowance for item purchases...NEVER would have imagined doing this and I have never done this with any other game.

The Free to Play move makes a hell of a lot more sense to me now.

Team Fortress 2 is still a video game? I thought it turned into a trading simulator and marketing tool. I didn't think it was possible to take the "video game" out of video game, but Valve did it. Oh well. Valve is praised for their innovation.

Holy crap, I should have logged into TF2 yesterday. I was half-expecting valve to pull a Eve styled overpriced virtual item, but an engagement ring that sends a message to everyone on TF2.

Looks like valve is going to double their profits for 8 consecutive years now.

I bought the $100 hat when it came out because that was for charity. This isn't so I won't be buying it.

I dont see anything to complain about. Youre perfectly fine to not buy the ring if you dont want to.

And consider that people have historically been willing to drop much, much more on other games in the past. I dont consider it much different except this time theres no definite leg-up in the game.

Eh, as long as that notification doesn't show up in game (like...in a match, at the start menu it wouldnt bother me) I couldn't give a crap. Though I am a little sad you can't actually wear it if that's true. Who wouldn't want a gigantic diamond ring on their finger? Could you imagine a heavy with that usin his fists? Blam, giant rock to the face.
