The Nintendo Switch Shipped 2.74 Million Units in March, Hopes to Ship 10 Million in 2017

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1375/1375462.jpgNintendo hopes to ship 10 million units of the Switch in the next fiscal year, and has already moved 2.74 million in March alone.

The Nintendo Switch has been selling well since it launched on March 3, and Nintendo has now announced the latest numbers through the end of its fiscal year. Since its launch, the Switch has shipped 2.74 million units worldwide, along with shipping 5.46 million games.

Chief among those games is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which Nintendo says sold 3.84 million units worldwide, with 2.76 million of those being for the Switch, and the remaining 1.08 for the Wii U. That means that the latest Zelda continues to have an insane attach rate of over 100 percent on the Switch.

Nintendo is taking these first month numbers as good news, and predicts that it will ship 10 million more Switch consoles by the end of this fiscal year, and another 35 million games in the same time frame.

You can dig deeper into the numbers, which include info on the 3DS and Wii U, as well as Nintendo's mobile games, by checking out all the reports on Nintendo's website [https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/earnings/index.html].

Ambitious goal. Wanting to sell almost 90% of what the Wii U sold in one year.

I kind of want one for BOTW alone, but I don't want to spend that much on a console for one game. I hope to hell E3 this year is great for Nintendo, because the Switch isn't going to draw a lot of people in with BOTW and a Mario game with no hard release date as the big draws for this year.

To be fair outselling the Wii U isn't that high a goal. Even the Xbone did it.

This is true. But for The Switch to outsell the nearly match the Wii U's sales as a good is pretty...interesting to say the least.

That is quite the goal... It might be achievable if the Scorpio flops and that rumor of a directors cut of Pokemon Sun/Moon for the Switch is true. Still if the Scorpio actually gains traction then it could suck away some of the Switch hype and make them come up short.

Only problem for the Scorpio is no matter how powerful the hardware is that doesn't make good games materialize for it. Microsoft is getting crushed on exclusives this gen. I may only play on PC now but I loved my 360 and I've been rooting for the Xbone to pull out of its funk. Fingers crossed for the Scorpio.

I'll paraphrase what I said about Capcom:

"Goal set too high by company whose previous products produced a decidedly lukewarm response."

Seriously though, people are probably gnashing their teeth at the availability of said products, in the first place.

Well put. I am actually rather interested in the Scorpio as an alternative for gaming on PC when we get lousy ports. Games like Dishonored 2 and Batman Arkham Knight have really burned me in the past with their lousy PC versions. Additionally Digital Foundry is reporting that the Scorpio will make 360 classics run better then they ever ran on a 360. I am looking forward toward trying out games like Lost Odyssey when the Scorpio drops and seeing how they play. Even if it doesn't have many new exclusives I can still see quite a few positives for me if I pick up the Scorpio.

Ya know if the Scorpio really did have full backwards compatibility that improved my performance in old games that would be a serious selling point for me.

I see what you're saying on the port front, even though the two examples you gave have been largely addressed. WB seriously dropped the ball on Arkham Knight but at this point it's very playable and ran great on both my 770 and 1080. Dishonored 2 definitely doesn't run as well as it should but I didn't run into the types of problems apparently many did, so perhaps my view is skewed on that one.

I have a relatively strong computer so I can typically brute force my way through so-so ports, but having the option to get a console version on the occasion something truly broken comes out would be nice. I've just been thrilled that MS exclusives come out on PC now. Gears and Forza were the main reasons I would consider an xbox but now I can play them at 1440p 60+ fps. Sure the Windows store sucks but again, I haven't run into any of the nightmares being reported by some.
