The (not so) amazing discovery.

I recently found myself playing Minecraft Alpha... for a few hours. I had begun a stairway to the center of the Earth project, and was moving down in a spiral, when I came upon a cave... a really freaking big cave. As I was about to enter, monsters appeared from the many dark corners and killed me. Wanting very much to explore, I turned the difficulty to "Peaceful" (yes, I should turn it back, but I probably won't), and headed in with enough torches to start a world-wide forest fire. And man was it big... which is where the "not-so" part comes in. I was trapped in that cave system for a few in-game days, and a few real hours. And then my idiotic self went back with more torches. I'm still exploring...

So the conversational part of this thread is this; have you ever discovered something in a game, any game at all, that seemed really great at first, but quickly became overwhelming and/or overstayed it's welcome?

On a slightly related note, I'm running out of trees on my Minecraft surface world.

Also you can take the twigs that the trees drop and plant them...<.<

On the subject of trees, if you mine the leaves, they'll sometimes drop saplings that you can plant that will grow into new trees if they're close enough to water and get enough light.

I have a greenhouse on my roof, so I've got a neverending supply of trees.

And pretty much the same thing, I alway find caves in Minecraft and end up horribly lost. The only way I can safely prevent it is by placing a burning log by the exits, which gets a tad expensive.

While I have discovered many a cave like yours, I usually don't get lost in them, as I'm merticuously making torch-arrows to guide my return path.

And don't feel bad for having some Peaceful fun. Most of the time I play Peaceful as well, as I prefer the strictly creative aspect of the game.

And if you're running out of trees, make sure you hog them Saplings and plant some more.

Oh, and as a personal reminder: If you're building underwater, don't forget to make "airlocks" every time you start a new wing/room.

That happened to me alot in Minecraft too.

If I was close to dying I'd rather turn it to peaceful then have to walk all the way back down.

Hmm... the only game I can think of where I felt helplessly lost or overwhelmed is Minecraft. I have a very good sense of direction and I don't get lost, but with Minecraft having the sun rise in the "east", set in the "north", and have huge massive underground caves I have been lost quite often.

I was lost once in Minecraft for a few hours, my map size went from 52mbs to 86. I eventually downloaded a mapping mod just so I could find my way back home. Sure, I could have just died, but I had about 30 raw diamonds and about 15 diamonds worth of tools. (This was above ground and before I knew you could make a compass)

Oh, and once I was lost in a massive cave ( I always leave torch trails), but after 30 minutes of trying to find my way out I just decided to dig straight up. It is actually a very effective way to escape a cave, just hope you don't run into lava or dirt doesn't fall on top of you!

The way I used to make sure I can always find my way home was formed after I went on a torch-building binge. I placed them on every available surface in my mountaintop home, so whenever I'm above ground at night, I just look for the brightest point on the map that isn't the moon.
