The Not-So-Marvelous 90s in Marvel Cartoons

Marvel wasn't always as incapable of doing wrong as its current cinematic efforts would suggest, which was very evident in their slew of 90s cartoons.

I think special mention should be mentioned to Incredible Hulk season 2 for descending into goofy camp. It felt like Marvel wanted to a She-Hulk spin-off but couldn't, so they attached her wacky adventures along with Bruce's angst.

Also, X-Men: Evolution next week. Yay.

Ah, the 90's Hulk. Unlike the 90's Iron Man and FF series, instead of getting better in season 2, it got much, MUCH worse.

Two words: FASHION. WARRIORS.

I hope Bob addresses Wild C.A.T.S., I actually liked that show! Sure, it fluffed over some of the aspects that were not safe for kids TV (ie: Voodoo was an "exotic dancer"). Also, to be honest, it totally bought into the EXTREME aspect of the 90's (which doesn't really bother me as it seems to bother Bob), but it was fun!

EDIT: Ah, just did some research...although WildCATS had more in common with X-Men (even done by Jim Lee), eventually they were bought out by DC (which explains Grifter's weird cameo in the Flashpoint Paradox movie).

You can all say what you like, I loved the FF series every bit as much as X-men and Spider-man. That Spider-man episode where they all teamed up was the best thing I had ever seen. It took the three-part Worlds finest episode of Superman TAS to beat it in my eyes.

That 1st FF intro could do nothing but remind me of Harry Partridge and he does that style a million times better. Also, first glance at Men in Black on "Crappy 90's" list made me say "...why here?" I remember it being the kind of forward-moving, universe expanding template the later films desperately needed, including L getting more field work, J (eventually) getting a damn silencer for Noisy Cricket, and K's mentor Alpha going rogue and becoming a evolution-obsessed mutant villain (and voiced by David Warner - always, always a good thing). Also also, I vaguely remember that Spiderman Unlimited was supposed to be a pseudo-sequel to the original Spiderman 90's series, but definitely remember that I stopped watching after the first episode.

Spiderman Unlimited wasn't that bad and your write up isn't even negative more disappointed about what limitations Marvel inflicted of Saban but yeah apart from MiB the rest of these were awful to average at there best.

Two things:

1 - Men in Black was, indeed, awesome. Shame it didn't last very long given the unique animation style and its fun stories.

2 - Will you ever consider doing a piece on Batman Beyond? I'm very curious on your thoughts for it. I've always found it to be my favorite iteration of Batman (especially since they wrapped it up with that Justice League Unlimited episode and spun it off in the comics as well).

As utterly dull as that first Iron Man intro was, he at least didn't have that god-awful '90s hair from the second one.

I'm still utterly shocked that, rather than doing "Batman Beyond" before Batman Beyond, Spider-man did something different and unpopular instead...

... Even more baffling since Marvel HAS a Spider-man from the future that has been, and remains, extremely popular.

I would love to see a series based on Miguel O'Hara and his battles with Alchemax.

That Iron Man cartoon was also one part synergistic effort to elevate the Force Works comic book (that ended the same time the cartoon did)... not really so much "Avengers," though it was cast out of the remains of the West Coast roster.

However, Unite We Stand was not really any more relevant to WCA than to Avengers proper. All of that cast had been active in both by then.

BTW Bob... "Wonder Man sucks?" Come on... He's been a major player since Avengers #9, had his own title, and still in use today. (Cast currently in Uncanny Avengers.)
That's more than Century has going for him. (Though both were part of "The Revengers" 3 years ago.)

Oh... and Malice? Not any more "Freudian" than Ghost Rider really. Or, more accurately, "The Six" from Mutant X, The transformations of the X-men in "Inferno," etc... Dark reflections have long been a pretty common trope.

Huh? I only know, or rather REMEMBER, Iron Man. I liked it a lot!
Think I might've also seen FF in this version...

Ultimate batman or sth? Maybe seen 1 or 2 eps.

My friends and I sometimes watch a few episodes of these old shows on Disney XD, and they did not age well to me. Most of these, with the exception of X-Men and Spider-Man, flew way under my radar when they were on, or weren't advertised well enough to stick. Hell, now DXD makes fun of them with reduced dialogue in their Sunday Morning Marvel block.
However, that MIB cartoon was totally awesome! It looks like it still holds up and it was freaking hilarious like the Noisy Cricket.

I think he'll also do Spectacular Spider-Man, that one short lived FF show from '06, and Wolverine and the X-Men. Oh, what could have been if those shows were allowed to continue...

Well, back in 2011, when the New52 was launched, they brought in the former Image/WildStorm characters, like Grifter, Voodoo, and Stormwatch. Then Team 7. To my knowledge, all have been cancelled. I'm especially disappointed we didn't get a big throw down between Stormwatch and the Justice League, but Grifter is still sticking around somewhere.

The MIB series was amazing. Why on earth is that on the list of bad marvel properties?

Other than that, definitely agree. Spiderman Unlimited definitely bothered the hell out of me because of just how bland it was. Seriously, you have a completely different setup, you can do literally anything you want with alter Earth. Why did you have to make it so boring? Just bleh.

Bob, I'm normally in agreement with you, but Wonder Man is rad. If anything sucks, it is your opinion on Wonder Man.
