Alright, I'll give it a shot, can't guarentee the greatest of obscurity.

1) It was a FIGHTING game that couldn't give normal directions and instead replaced the PS controls with frickin' letters.

2) It contained at least two or three very well known Square characters

Ehrgeiz. Also known as, "God Bless The Ring." And technically, it was also a dugneon crawler, and a bunch of mini games.

Try this one- There were many epic aerial battles, including Rohn Vs. Unikrom. It was on the PS2. It was mostly single player, but it had awesome multiplayer arenas, and it allowed you to be Good, Hive-mind Imperialist, or Demonic.

I don't think Fallout 3 is even remotely obscure. And the quest to get the best gun in the game (Lincoln's Repeater) is not even remotely obscure either.
