The Penosos: A Mafia RP (closed: see beginning of page 2 for details)

War is a thing of the past. At least, that is the official word. But official word has a way of leaving loopholes. Instead of war, it is now organized crime that reigns supreme. Nations don't wage war. Families do.

One such family is the Penoso family. Having made their mark 20 years ago, this family is now looking at spreading their influence. More accurately, the new head of the family is looking at spreading the Penoso influence. It won't be easy, of course. There are other families, and Philadelphia is large enough for four families to have a comfortable grip on the city. Unfortunately, these four families are not satisfied with "comfortable". Even one family can prove to be unhappy, if there are multiple viewpoints of what is best for the parties involved. And with this upstart family making their way, it is left to be seen whether they are crushed underfoot by an established family, or implode from internal tension.

This family currently has control of many operations in North Philadelphia. They specialize in small businesses, converted into fronts for gambling. They don't mind getting violent, but prefer not to be lethal, unless their way of life is threatened. The head of the family is Don Aldo, who relies on his brother Fredo to enforce their will. The Don is the brains, Fredo is the brawn. Both have taught painful lessons to those who underestimate them.

This is the family based in Eastern Philly. While the Talianis focus on gambling fronts, the Dantes are open about their businesses, which are all connected to the arms business. If a gun is bought in Philly, if ammo is bought in Philly, if a gun is fixed in Philly, if anything connected to a weapon happens in Philly, it can be traced back, ultimately, to the Dantes. Donna Adele is the head of this family, her daughter Maria being the enforcer. Adele is more trigger-happy than cunning, with her daughter Maria following instructions out of family respect rather than eagerness. Several have contemplated using the daughter to get the the mother, but hold back out of concern for the inevitable reprisal.

This is the family based in Southern Philly. They are the closest to legitimate, owning tailors, barbers, and pawn shops, all legitimate. However, their status as a Mafia family becomes clear when others mistake their legitimacy for an unwillingness to get their hands dirty. In truth, they are openly legitimate in order to disguise what goes on in the docks they own. Warehouses are the meeting places for assassins, and each assassin owes a cut to this family. The head of the family is Don Luca, with no known enforcer. While he is seen as weak, and is physically no more than a business man, the assassins on his hidden payroll keep him protected, and every assassin that has been convinced to turn on him has disappeared. Other than Anna Maria, of course, whose body was found in one of the warehouses, left in a condition that was only described as "monstrous" by police reports.

This is the fun part of any RP...the characters. Without them, what is the RP? That said, I'll list what I want in the character sheet, along with details.

Name: This should be obvious. Try to have an Italian name. If you can't think of one, then come up with an explanation as to how someone could become connected with the Penoso family without being Italian, or why an Italian family would give a child a non-Italian name.

Surname: Again, try to have an Italian surname. Penoso is easy to come up with. However, it is not required. Think about The Godfather. How many of the members of that "family" were actually Corleones? If you have a different last name, just come up with an explanation in the later section.

Specialty: What exactly is it your character does for the family? If they have a weapon of choice, what is it?

Strengths: What is your character good at?

Weaknesses: What is your character not so good at? Please try to have the number of weaknesses at least somewhat close to the number of strengths. Having four strengths and two weaknesses is fine, as long as they are legitimate weaknesses. Six strengths and one weakness, though...that better be a crippling, devastating weakness.

Age: No need to be exact about this. Just a general idea of how old the character is.

Description: Please be, well, descriptive. The more details you give, the more easily we can picture your character.

Background: This is where any explanation for different names and surnames will go. In addition, this is also where you would show your character's history with the family. Were they born into it? Married into it? Friendshipped into it? Be as creative as you want.

Notes: Anything you want us to know about your character that doesn't quite fit into another category can go here.

Name: Sara

Surname: Penoso

Specialty: Underboss, melee based weapons

Strengths: Intelligent, skilled with melee and improvised weaponry, fairly strong

Weaknesses: Less than average marksmanship, prone to anger, recovering alcoholic

Age: Mid 20s

Description: Sara is approximately six feet tall, with a gymnast build (meaning lean muscles, but still muscular). She has short blond hair and dark green eyes, along with having fair skin. She generally wears business suits, usually with a masculine cut. This, combined with her fairly flat figure, gives her a masculine appearance, although she has been known to dress more feminine if she is in a position to require doing so. Her preferred outfit color is navy blue to black, but she is known to wear red if she needs to get her hands dirty. Her shoes, like her suits, are generally more masculine dress shoes. When she is not around close family members, she is known to wear thin rimmed glasses, giving her an air of being strictly professional.

History: Sara was born into the family shortly before their initial rise to power. Getting an education like any good American should, she attempted to join the military shortly after high school. Partway through boot camp, she returned home with a dishonorable discharge, having introduced a soldier's face to a few trees and a rock after one too many comments about her appearance. With any chance of a legitimate career now gone, she was married to a capo. Unfortunately, with that capo getting taken out in a hit a year later, her father, Don Giovanni, started grooming her to replace him. Taking to the position like a duck to water, Sara became the underboss just a year ago.

Notes: There are rumors that Sara was somehow responsible for her husband's death, despite having an airtight alibi of being in jail at the time on an assault charge that was later dismissed. One of Sara's anger buttons, however, is to have anyone bring up the rumor, doing little to dispel the suspicions. She has also been arrested on several occasions, but only convicted once of a drunk and disorderly charge. After serving her full sentence of 6 months (no "good behavior" here), she was forcibly checked into rehab by her father. Since then, she has not only had no drinks, but refuses to be anywhere there will be alcohol. Also, despite wearing glasses during meetings, she actually has perfect vision, with her glasses being plain lenses. She only wears them in an attempt to look professional.

The rules are simple. No god moding (hence the strengths and weaknesses), no Mary Sues. Harming other player characters is allowed, but only with permission of both parties.

This RP is going to be on the more mature side. If you have a problem with, say, the content of any gangster movie, or playing out such, this is not the RP for you. This is not the family for the family, capische? OK, I'll be honest. I just wanted to say capische. But seriously, this will not be a light RP at all.

Name: Gemma

Surname: Penoso

Specialty: Card Shark

Strengths: Quick-thinking, talent for multidimensional planning. Resourceful.

Weaknesses: Only a mediocre fighter by the standards of her family, be it with guns or melee. Also driven by a need to prove herself, even to the point of overshooting her goal, messing something up, or getting herself hurt.

Age: 20

Description: Gemma is physiscally small, only 5'4" and very light, though she is a little bit stronger then she looks. Reddish hair, freckles, and bright blue eyes offset a sly, almost sadistic smile. She dresses rather informally, though with little constancy. She can usually be seen holding a deck of cards, fiddling with or shuffling them.

History: When the Don had his younger daughter, he decided within the first year of her life that the sweet little thing deserved better then a criminal life, so he gave her up for adoption. Growing up unsatisfied with a dull and tedious life, she deduced on her own that she was adopted at the age of thirteen, and at fifteen, successfully tracked down her true parentage and demanded she be allowed to join the family business. Not only did she see an opportunity to finally test herself mentally, she also subconciously felt she had been rejected for being not good enough, and wanted to prove otherwise.

Though reluctant at first, her father was impressed by her ability to track him down, and saw her potential. She was allowed to stay with the family, and at eighteen, join the family business.

She now runs a small (but among the criminal underworld, popular) gambling bar, the Good Hand, where, under the cover of her legal name, Gemma Anderson, she regularly cheats the opposing families out of their money, unbeknownst to them, funneling it back to the Penosos.

Notes: None.

Name: William

Surname: Ray

Specialty: manhunting.

Strengths: he is a skilled knife fighter, able to use any normal knife for both hand to hand and as a thrown weapon. From living in the Tennessee Mountains for almost 21 years he is a superb tracker, which while useful in the city isn?t as good as in the wilderness, but still damn impressive.

Weaknesses: Has fired guns and found them not to his liking, to loud and unpredictable, he has terrible gun skills all across the board. A fiery temper concerning both the family he came from in the mountains and the one he is in now, more than willing to plant a knife in someone who disrespects either.

Age: 26

Description: standing just over 6 feet he weighs less than 200 pounds. Living without many of the things people take for granted means his body is toned and his muscles like braided steel wires, small and easy to not notice but deadly when used correctly. His eyes are a very lightly and bright blue, while his hair is a short almost buzz cut blond. He is usually wearing blue jeans and long sleeve western shirts. His old cowboy boots have been traded in for combat boots that are always laced tight and under the jeans, with at least one small knife in both. Another small knife on his belt he keeps a Bowie under the skirt on a leather harness. The times he needs to look professional he has a nice black suit and even dress shoes, but he always looks uncomfortable and will get out and into his normal clothes as soon as possible.

Background: growing up in the Tennessee mountains for 21 years meant he had a lot of time to curse them. He grew up and learned hat he had to concerning living there and he even got good. But the temper he showed when his family was bad mouthed got him running from the mountains into the city?s, running till he thought he was far enough that the men he had killed wouldn?t be able to find him again.
Starting in Philly as a 22 year old he was introduced to the darker side almost immediately when someone on a bar decided to call his family back home mountain inbreed idiots. This guy found that he was allergic to steel, at least when its thru his throat. His friends tried to take him but they all got knife cuts and ran out while they could still run. Over the next few years he started finding people and more than a few times disposing of them for others. This became eventually him hunting and killing for the Penoso family most of the time. While they have other man hunters he is the one most likely to just find and kill the target if not told specifically to find alive.

Notes: usually keeps between 3-6 knifes on him at any one time, most small 2 and a half inch knifes for his boot and anywhere else he thinks he needs one. The bowie is a D-Guard Bowie knife
That is kept on a leather harness under the shirt he happens to be wearing. With the knife itself on his back and the hilt facing down and almost in the middle of his back.

Notes: Johnny likes to drink quite a bit in his spare time and he's not afraid to start a fight and knows many ways of making you talk.

Name: Michel

Surname: Penoso

Speciality: Blackmail, information gathering and "negotiating". If he has to use weapons, something that he can use from afar, like a sniper rifle, is what he is best at.

Strengths: Intelligence, subtility, charisma and intimidation are his foremost skills. He is therefore a skilled manipulator and liar. He can also use fire-arms decently, and his network of contacts is large and effective.

Weaknesses: Reckless, selfish and with a habit of not following instructions. There is a certain of envy driving him, as he has an inferiority complex. He's not good at physical combat, and has a dislike of blood.

Age: Mid-twenties (but younger than the GM's character)

Description: Red hair that is usually well kept, with his eyes being a mix between grey and green. He is a little pale, and has a few freckles, mostly on his nose. He's not tall, only 5'8", and has a small build. He normally wears somewhat fancy clothes.

Background: Born as an unimportant middle child, expected to be able support the family, he soon proved to be a disappointment. Since he was a small and timid child, he never really got involved in the family apart from being the don's child. Still, family is important to the mafia, and he grew up with a certain amount of wealth. It was not until he was 18 they actually attempted to give him a job, working a safe job inside an office, dealing with paperwork. However, attempting to get accepted by his father and the rest of the family, he started putting together a network of contacts, gathering information at an exeptional rate. A lot of this network has been aquired through his special skills. He also learned how to use fire-arms, and has slowly gained a bit of respect.

It is still very recently that he finally managed to gain recognition from his father. He relies a lot on the lower-rank members of the mafia and "civilians".

Notes:
- He is still largely regarded as a spoiled and useless member of the family, something he is too aware of.
- He carries around a small gun, and he usually is accompanied by a few body-guards, although he might sacrifice safety for subtlety.
Name: Donatello

Surname: Vespa

Specialty: Narcotics distribution. Concealed firearms.

Strengths: Above average marksmanship. Quick runner and adept at on foot evasion.

Weaknesses: Poor at any form of hand to hand combat. Heavy drug user. Extremely self conscious.

Age: Early 20's

Description: Donnie stands at 5'10 with a slim, athletic build. His long brown hair is usually tied in a ponytail. His dark blue eyes are usually glazed over and staring into space. Donnie likes to look unassuming, usually wearing navy blue pants, a blue vest, and black button up with running shoes when out on the job. On occasions that call for it, such as meeting with the family, he'll make himself more presentable with a black suit accented by a yellow tie and scarf. His most prized possession is his father's cherry wood pipe which he keeps in his left pocket when not in use.

Background: Born under the name Donatello Cassidy, Donnie moved to West Philly with his recently widowed mother and maternal grandparents. His Sicilian cousins would often bully Donnie for his Irish heritage and odd accent. This caused him to spend most of his time out around the neighborhood with his other friends.

While in high school, he became close friends with a boy from the Penoso family who was largely more understanding. After urging him to cover up his heritage, he introduced Donnie to older members of the family, who inducted him as a part time drug courier. They supplied him with contacts and taught him how to wield a weapon to protect his product.

After years of avoiding arrest and making the family tons of money, he was given a his own minor drug operation to run. Though, he remains at the level of a mere associate.

Notes: Donnie usually covers up his accent with a standard Northern American dialect. It's usually enough to fool members not in the know about him.

His drug habit is tolerated by the higher ups as Donnie remains attentive while under the influence and has yet to become belligerent.

Name: Sinclair

Surname: Readman

Specialty: Assassination, breaking-and-entering and espionage.

Strengths: A crack shot with pistols, skilled knife thrower, and has a working knowledge of most poisons. In addition, he can break into most places with a variety of tools, such as a locksmiths set. This goes hand in hand with his natural affinity to stealth, and his professional demeanor.

Weaknesses: Sinclair is physically weak, and has to rely on weapons or stealth in any sort of fight, effectively making him a glass cannon. He is next to useless with larger firearms such as rifles, which are far too unwieldy for him. His personality also gets in the way due to a slight obsessive compulsive streak, due to becoming very used to everything being clean and tidy, making him distracted or even distressed when things are either in utter bedlam, or happen to be absolutely filthy.

Age: 32

At just a little over six-foot-five with a very lean, lanky form, Sinclair is a tall, thin man, often clad in a tailored suit. His skin is fair, his black hair cropped short and slicked back. His face is narrow and clean-shaven, and his most prominent feature are a pair of cunning, narrow green eyes, as well as a rather long, pointed nose, making his face look like it's dominated by sharp angles.

He is almost always seen wearing some variation of a three-piece suit, usually in black, or black with colored pinstripes. The one that seems to be his favorite is a black suit with blue pinstripes, with matching jacket and trousers along with a dark blue waistcoat, and a clean white dress shirt underneath. He always accompanies his suits with a stark black tie with a simple white cross design on it.

On his person, and hidden in various parts of said suit however, are at least one pistol, and no less than five knives, all balanced for throwing, as well as one vial of his 'poison-of-the-day'. This is because he believes in always being prepared for the next job, whenever the Penoso's should happen to call on him.

Born to a prostitute in the slums of Philidelphia, Sinclair, who was actually named Bobby Michaels at the time, had an abusive and lonely childhood. This was due in no small part to the fact that he was an unwanted child with an unknown father, but also because his mother, Sammy Michaels, was planning on training him to be a whore himself to increase her profits and live a life more to her liking. And she made no secret of it.

So, to avoid her hand, he learned early on just how to make himself scarce while he was home, and decided to make his escape at school. While he was virtually non-existent to the other kids there, he had books, which he read at every opportunity at had. And after school, he would always wait to go home at the last moment, instead taking the time to merely hide in the shadows and observe who he could from the mouths of the dark alleys of the city. He watched as people conducted drug deals, got in brawls, and, very occasionally, were murdered. And, occasionally, would pay for being late by being beaten by Sammy once he was in the door.

At fourteen, after having been given a black eye, and several cracked ribs, he had had enough. The next night, he came home when his mother had expected him to for a change, and behaved for the evening before going to bed early. When he heard his mother start to 'entertain' a guest, he slipped out of his room and made his way to the kitchen. Taking a knife, he then moved to her bedroom, slid inside, and carefully came up behind her client. Reaching around, he simply cut the mans throat wide open, and with an utter lack of emotion, stabbed his screaming mother to death. After disposing of all the evidence he could, such as cleaning the knife and putting it back in its place, he cleaned himself off and disposed of his bloodied clothes.

When he came back, it was at the same time he usually did, and he took the time then to call the police, giving them a very convincing act that he had found his mothers body, while making his normal relationship with her plain. As they looked for an imaginary culprit, he was made a ward of the state, and was housed in the local orphanage, which he greatly preferred to his mothers apartment. However, he still sneaked away at any given moment when not distracted with a book, and continued to watch others unseen.

He didn't even think about the murder of his mother and the man who hired her services until he overheard a conversation with a junior underboss for an up-and-coming crime family, one who frequented past the alleys he watched from, where he complained about a lack of new meat, and of people willing to kill someone that needed killing. He took the time then to stride out and offer to work for them, in exchange for training, and a new name. He had despised the name his mother gave him, and at the same time, his reading made him long for dignity, class, and comfort. It was several long minutes before the underboss decided to give him a shot, and gave him his first assignment: Kill an uppity drug dealer, and he was in.

A week later, the dealer was dead, and he strode up the the underboss, telling him the job was done. The underboss then asked for his name, and his answer was thus: Sinclair Readman. From then on, he was trained to be able to break into various heights of security, how to both fire a pistol and be accurate with it, and how to throw knives and fight with them in close quarters if need be, among other things. Even after the death of the underboss about a decade later, Sinclair has been grateful to the Penoso family and swore his loyalty, since it was because of them that he made himself who he was.

Time and again, he proved to be a reliable employee to the Penoso family, and he used the money he earned from the hits he made to give himself a veneer of class, renting a small apartment in their territory and otherwise living the kind of life he dreamed of when he was a child: As a self-made man with little to no ties to his past. As far as he was concerned, Bobby Michaels was not only dead, he never even lived in the first place.

-Despite being involved with the Penoso Family, Sinclair isn't of Italian descent. In fact, while he has no idea, he is actually of Germanic descent, on his fathers side.

-Even as a child, Sinclair despised filth, dirt, and messiness, though he had to simply bear with it. As an adult, he is very particular about everything being in its proper place, as well as being clean. This minor obsession with tidiness occasionally gets him in trouble, even on the job.

-Sinclair considers himself a consummate professional: Emotions have no place whatsoever on the job, and even to his targets he is courteous and patient, though when given the chance to kill them and get away with it, he doesn't hesitate.

-Even in the company of the Penoso's, Sinclair always refers to his assignments as 'housecalls', and introduces himself as "Sinclair Readman, Esq.". He also refers to his targets as 'clients'.

-His background is a particular sore spot for him: He will often hold a deep-seated grudge against anyone who would either use it to insult or blackmail him. Even with his embarrassment of where he came from, however, he can see some similarities between prostitutes and assassins: They both essentially sell themselves for money, but he finds prostitution particularly distasteful thanks to his mother, while he finds assassination to be much more dignified, not least of which because he can keep his clothes on.

-One skill that Sinclair is proud of that he cannot apply to his work is the fact that he is a rather good cook, with cooking being something he learned relaxes him after a job.

Name: Randal

Surname: Schmidt

Speciality: Fixing things, modifying things, destroying things, procuring unusual or dangerous chemicals or hardware. He is also proficient at hitting things with a wrench.

Strengths: A great handyman, has contacts in useful industries, owns a garage full of useful equipment, tough and powerful physically.

Weaknesses: Not as young as he used to be, is trying to quit smoking; may know how to disassemble, clean, and modify most weapons but he is a really bad shot. Doesn't bring in much money.

Age: 53

Description: A bald, square-jawed man. Stands at about 5'9" with a muscular, if slightly overweight, figure. When not at work he tends to favour a jacket and trousers or a Hawaiian shirt and shorts when its warm. He needs glasses for reading. If you want a frame of reference, think Mike from Breaking Bad.

Background: Randal owns a mid sized mechanic/workshop, as well as a large scrap yard, with the means to create or procure many things. Was gradually inducted into the Penoso family; he had a few good friends within it already, and one day one of them asked if he could get his hands on some illegal car mods. Then it was weapon mods. Then an explosive needed to be made. Then a dead body needed to be disposed of. Soon he became a regular go-to for a wide range of practical problems, and he was always happy to help.
His close family is rather fragmented. He is divorced from his wife, Lola (she hates him), and has two daughters, one adolescent who lives with her mother and the other and adult who has already moved out.

Note: Generally a fairly level headed, tough man. Randal does have a soft spot for his children but hates his wife more than most rival gangsters. Gets quite passionate when discussing his divorce.

I'm definately in, of course. Quick question, though: when is the timeframe? Modern Day? 1930's?

Modern day technology, but an alternate universe. And it will be almost entirely character driven. There will be little plots here and there, but think of this as basically a wide open sandbox RP.

Edit: Also, I don't see any problems with your character sheet, carp. Keep in mind, though, that due to Sara's...problems, she wouldn't be meeting your character at the workplace.

Looks good, Shadowstar. My only concern is the heavy drug user thing. Does it affect him in being able to listen or function? For example, if he were on drugs, would he be able to comprehend his orders and be able to follow them properly?

Hi, here's mine. Also, speaking as someone who thought Pennsylvania was an Eastern European country for most of their life, can someone please give me a quite description of the place? Thanks.

Character sheet looks fine. As for the city of Philadelphia, it is a rather large city, to say the least. The city itself has a population of 1.5 million, but the surrounding metropolitan area has 6 million people. It's rather arts and culture driven, with the largest urban park in the world. It's actually quite similar in New York City when it comes to demographics, with the largest ancestries being Irish, followed by Italian (by the way, I seriously didn't know that at first when I picked Philly as the city).

As for the geographic layout, it is next to the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers, which is where the waterfronts are. The accent is mostly similar to the New York accent. Actually, have you ever seen the movie Rocky? That takes place in Philadelphia, as does the show Cold Case, both of which were also filmed there, so if you want an idea of what the city looks like, those would be a good place to start. There is a night life, mostly on South Street and the Old City, so that area is where Gemma would likely have her bar. Finally, Philadelphia, even in the real world rather than the alternate world this RP will be using, has a bit of a crime problem, being ranked the 22nd most dangerous city in the U.S. in 2008. for comparison, New York City was ranked 259, while LA was ranked 158.

Ah, thanks. I have been to NY so that should give me some idea.

EDIT: Notes section edited for GM concerns.
Looks good now.

Yes, I will. And I have. I'll send out links once the profiles are fully done. Won't mean that no one else can sign up, just that we'll be getting started.

hope this is decent enough, any problems please tell me and if I don't get in again please tell me it's very annoying when people do this.

Name: Johnny

Surname: Nitti

Specialty: Interrogation and a Baseball Bat, wood or metal he doesn't care as long it doesn't break while he fighting someone.

Strengths: An expert Interrogator and Enforcer, he's a very strong fighter, strong enough to hold his own.

Weaknesses: He's really bad at shooting seriously if there's a gunfight he stays out of it because he can't shoot, he's not very smart he can't read or talk about smart stuff as he calls it.

Age: 35

Description: He's big around 6 foot 2, very well build with a very intimidating and cold look in his eyes, very quiet doesn't like to talk much expect about a job, his hair's black, a little short too and it's split right down the middle, wears a black vest with black trousers and black tie, a red shirt with rolled up sleeves.

Background:John is the son of Frank Nitti who was nicknamed as "The Enforcer", growing up he had a strict but caring upbringing when he was 19 he said want to be an enforcer like his father, so he was trained by his dad and learned everything Frank knew about Interrogate and enforcing he grew to be very strong and the best enforcer next to his dad, before his father died he got in touch with some old friends in the Russo Family and asked for Johnny to be given some trial runs and see if all worked out well needless to say he impressed a few of big names including Don Luca who taken him for small time jobs for the while.

Notes: Johnny likes to drink quite a bit in his spare time and he's not afraid to start a fight and knows many ways of making you talk.

My main concern is him being part of the Russo family. Would Johnny be an antagonist?

Not really "against", but it's more of an uneasy truce, where things are obviously not going to be peaceful for long.

It would be. Just be aware that if he stays with the Russo family, things could get...a bit complicated.
