When it comes to spies, you'll need to write a PM detailing what your spies are going to do - where they're going, their objective, etc., details are key. You'll later recieve a PM detailing the results of your endeavor, and/or their findings.

This will be a secret action and kept strictly to PM's. If you create a relay of secret actions - i.e. sending one spy to case security, then another to infiltrate it for data - you have higher chances of success than just sending in one spy to handle both. Some tasks are easier than others and spies can fail depending on the task; either they'll be killed, or the target will be made aware of your efforts.

Speaking of that, how will we be conducting research into technologies? Like through PM or should that be mentioned in the RP?

There's no need to PM any research and development unless you're planning on stealing it from someone else. Put in the time in posts and play your cards right, and you should be able to put your discoveries to use.

Seems like a great idea. Here's my sheet

Name: Markel Darkis

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Appearance: Markel has short red hair, blue eyes and pale skin. He is very slim to the point of being scrawny and is a few inches above average height. He appears somewhat sickly and unwell much of the time due to his illness.

Position: Landlord

Background: Markel is the second son of Khazine Darkis, the former ruler of the nation Colonis.
When he was young his father wished for him to study politics and to act as an advisor to his older brother and planned inheritor of his father's title Colin, though Markel, feeling from youth as though he was confined to not being able to make his own choices, instead opted for what he saw as the freedom of the military and began training at a young age. However, at the age of 15 he fell sick with an unknown illness which gradually deteriorated his health. His father then forbid him from serving.
Seeing not much alternative, Markel spent most of his time confined to his family's estate where he mostly studied military doctrine and history, wishing that he could one day go off and fight in similar battles to the ones he read of.
Roughly 6 months later the bloodiest conflict in Colonian history broke out.

Just on the edge of Colonis' lied the nation of Zilka and it's people, which the Colonians simply called Zilks. The Zilks had traded and coexisted with the Colonian's near their land for decades, though lately these people had become more and more disjointed and disloyal to Colonis and Lord Darkis became worried of the Zilk influence, fearing that the Zilk's were turning the outer territories against Ashalen, the capital of Colonis.
Darkis sent out one of his generals to assess the situation, who never returned. What had happened to him was unknown, though most of his lieutenants believe he had been murdered and pushed Darkis to retaliate by pillaging the nearest Zilk village. Darkis ordered that none of his troops attack the Zilks until he could become fully aware of the situation, however one of his men lead a small force into outer Zilka, raiding several villages and killing hundreds. Darkis and his inner cabinet had no idea that the action had taken place, and the next day when Zilk forces assaulted outer Colonian cities in response, Darkis saw this as an unprevoked action and declared war. So officially began the Zilka War.

For roughly two thirds of the conflict, the Colonian Army had been on the defensive all the while being pushed back towards the capital territory. While many Colonian soldiers and civilians had lost their lives or been captured, to it's leaders the much greater loss was the loss of around %60 of their territories as the Zilks pushed on from all sides. Refuggees flooded into the central areas and their increasingly crowded cities as almost all industrial production was exclusively focused on equipping the military. Despite the hardship on the battlefields and at home, the war had Colonis' many diverse and disconnected peoples come together and become unified against a single enemy. Because of the great manufacturing focus on military equipment and fortifications very few new buildings were created to house the refuggees, though they found themselves being taken in by the people of the places they had fled to. It was not uncommon for three or even four families from different areas to live under one roof. During most of the war Markel acted as an advisor to his father as well as his brother Colin, who spent much of the conflict fighting on the frontline as a general.

After two and a half years of continuous Zilk advancement their attacks stopped. The Colonian commanders feared they were gathering their strength for a massive assault against the remaining areas. Believing that his defences would not hold against such an attack, Lord Darkis opted to go on the offensive and reclaim Colonis' lost ground. His eldest son and heir to his title Colin lead the attack, which was a massive success as the Zilks up until this point believed that the Colonians couldn't effectively fight offensively. Unfortunately three months into the counteroffensive Colin was killed, which devastated his father. While Markel was somewhat jealous of Colin being chosen to be the next Landlord even despite it being tradition for the eldest son to take the title, he still greatly admired his brother and pushed his father to continue the war and annihilate the Zilks in response. Despite his sadness, Lord Darkis curiously instead made peace with the Zilks and even let them have some of the Colonian land around their borders. Markel, more angered than saddened by the loss of his brother, was furious. The three year war was now over, and both sides sought about rebuilding.

Markel was 19 when the war ended. With no other sons Khazine Darkis appointed him as his heir, and for the two remaining years of his life educated Markel on how to effectively lead Colonis. Markel never got over his father's decison to make peace with the Zilks rather than destroy them, but in time he came to respect him greatly and vowed to do whatever he could to be as great a leader as he when he passed on. Khazine Darkis died peacefully at the age of 48. He had taught his son to rebuild Colonis and usher in a new time of peace and prosperity, but Markel thought this view was naive and that his homeland would always have aggressors seeking to destroy it. The biggest potential threat on his mind was the severely beaten but still present Zilks, who still occupied around 10% of pre-war Colonis.
Just a few days after taking the title of Landlord, Lord Markel Darkis gave his Army the order to take back these lands and from there drive deep into Zilka with the intention of destroying it once and for all.
Two years later and Zilka is now effectively a few scattered villages and towns. Markel, paranoid of the outside world, has since then put an increasingly large focus on strengthing the military.

Personality: Markel has a rather calm and friendly demeanor publicly, however when in talks with officials on national matters he is often quick to anger and has been known to issue impossible to fulfill demands to those serving under him. He is something of a perfectionist and constantly pushes himself, those around him and his country itself to strive for excellence. Despite this he greatly respects his subordinates and admires the Colonian people, particularly it's soldiers.
Markel's main desire is to see Colonis returned to it's pre-war glory, just as his father wished. Because Colonis has been self reliant for much of it's history and it's people still fully believing that the outsider Zilk invasion was completely unprovoked, Markel has a distrust of other nations and is a firm believer that the only person a Colonian can trust is another Colonian.
A major influence on Markel's personality and behaviours is his health, which becomes increasing worse over time and makes him appear very frail. He doesn't often appear publicly because of this, and while he previously used a walking stick he discarded it after becoming Landlord. When he does appear to anyone other than his immediate subordinates and trusted friends he takes a variety of drugs and tonics to prevent any sign of his physical weakness from showing. Markel believes his sickness will claim his life within the next ten years, but he has accepted this fact. His main concern is finding a good candidate for Landlord after his death.

Domain, Colonis: Colonis is essentially made up of several small provinces which form it's territories. All Colonian land exists northeast of Lake Mitre. The inner territories, being closer to the capital and it's influence, have always been more loyal to the Landlords, are more fortified and overall have a higher standard of living. The inner territories are Ashalen, the most populated territory and capital, Skarvka, known for it's vast mines, and Haska, renowned for it's manufacturing capabilties. The outer territories are primarily agriculturally focused and all of them were taken by the Zilks during the Zilka War. Rebuilding efforts on these areas have so far been good and a series of roads guarded by the occassional fort connect them together, but many of their people who fled to the inner territories have yet to return and still dwell in their cities. Redeveloping the outer territories to increase the viability of the nation as a whole is one of Markel's foremost goals, though he currently still mainly concerns himself with strengthing the military.

Troops: Being a rather unexpansionist yet paranoid nation, Colonian military might has always been centred on it's armies which are typically geared towards territorial defence. The men of the Colonian Army are well trained and equipped volunteers, though it as a whole lacks varied combat experience due to only fighting one major war in two decades.

In addition to the regular army there is also the Pioneers and the Militia.

The Pioneers are an initiative Khazine Darkis established late in his life during the Zilka War. He envisioned them as an elite reserve cavalry force able to quickly reinforce threatened areas and from there repel attacking forces, however a year after his death Markel repurposed them into highly mobile raiders to wipe out the remaining pockets of Zilk establishment around Colonis' borders. So far they have been devastatingly effective, the results can be seen in the hundreds of recently captured Zilk slaves being marched through the streets of Colonian cities every few months to work the nations many mines and foundries. Tales of the Pioneers 'heroic' exploits against hardened foes are legendary among the Colonian people, though in fact they now primarily sweep through and burn down unwitting Zilk villages murdering at will and taking whatever survivors there may be as slaves as vengenace for similar acts during the Zilka War. There are also rumours that at least some Pioneer units use Zilk prisoners of war for bloody 'training exercises'.
Nevertheless, the Pioneers are a rather small yet very effective force and have proven themselves in battle against hardened opponents.

The Colonian Militia is essentially a much more unified and competant version of the various bands of fighters old Colonian villages would organise to be the first line of defence against a sudden enemy attack. With the regular army stretched to the breaking point during the Zilka War, Khazine Darkis saw the need for a proper reserve fighting force should they fail. While the Zilk offensive was halted before that need was absolutely paramount, Darkis continued his work in creating a unified reserve force should they, or another threat, attack again.
The Militia was the outcome of many years of negotiations, trade and treaties between the Colonian territories which had been scattered diplomatically due to the devastating war, believing that none of them had fully supported each other in the crisis. After much work the Grand Militia was created, which had a standard uniform and and fought for and answered to Colonis as a whole rather than any particular territory. Khazine Darkis saw it's creation as his greatest achievement. Not only was it a capable reservist force, to him it also embodied true Colonian unity as it's members were mostly from different territories, rather than the regular army which members had mostly come from Ashalen.
Before Khazine died, he left his son with the duty of refining and upkeeping the Militia, believing it still could be and needed to be improved. Firstly he had many of his more experienced commanders and officers train the Militia forces rather than command the Pioneers or regular Army, as the threat of the Zilk territories was now virtually nonexistant. He then sought about acquiring more members as part of a long term defence plan.
While the Militia already had a reasonable recruitment rate as it's members were paid fairly well and legally could not be sent outside of Colonian territory, Markel, paranoid that another invasion would happen at some point instilled conscription on all territories. Each one would have to send a certain number of young able bodied individuals to serve for a year every so often. This was mostly seen as a good thing, as during Markel's reign Colonis itself has seen peace and therefore the Militia forces could train extensively and need not see combat beyond suppressing the occassional slave uprising. Conscription was seen as a safe method of gradually preparing the population for an invasion. However, later Markel also made the controversal choice of ordering that women as well as men must serve, primarily arguing that if Colonis is again attacked women will end up having to fight anyway, but they are not allowed in any force beyond the Militia.
Is it seen by many as unjust that women can be conscripted in the Militia but cannot voluntarily join the regular army.

If there's any issues lemme know.

Personally I would've kept the enemy landlord and province's name vague; there's no telling if anyone else may have land next to you. If you were looking for a name to justify your army's policies, you could just have that enemy be Sul'giat, especially since they control most of the land surrounding Lake Mitra; the map shows it as the southeastern land with the dotted lines showing its border.

Apart from this discrepency, it's a good character sheet. You'll either need to alter some names or keep things vague as to who you were fighting. Feel free to ask about Sul'giat if you have any questions.

So, we have three southern Landlords, who all have small, well equipped, elite armies, with weak outer provinces that have powerful central strongholds. We all seem to be into manufacturing, or have plans to invent gunpowder weaponry or similar.

In light of the stunning diversity, I may redesign my character. Thoughts?

Could it be at all possible to make a character who happens to be an obscure Prince in charge of a very minor principality, returning from a self-imposed exile? Because this idea is very, very interesting, and I definitely want to know more. This may just be the thread that gets me into rping on The Escapist.

[EDIT]: Unfortunately, I've realized that I neither have the time, attention span or skill to really put any good effort into this, and it really deserves that kind of effort from what I've read of this. So, I'm going to have to step back from joining in.

We are lacking in the numbers department a Prince, or a Castellian so that might be a possible venue.

Shannow seems pretty cool enough himself to be flexible for any of those roles but that's my opinion. In Achreus, the other Shannow seemed to be a pretty good head of the IIB ;)

I'd welcome some diversity in characters and roles; it would make creating the power outlets of Princes and castellians feel kinda vindicated.

That's a very good question. In medieval politics you get situations where every noble turns their gaze from one particular individual - even if he was important - on account of some stigma like being a criminal, or different race, ethnic group, or mentality from the norm (i.e. magic), or any other reason why people would give one space. In the case of a pariah Prince, they'd have to give aid to one of their own if it keeps the land united.

I'd still have your for the RP and I'm pretty sure a lot of people here are willing to help you out in anything. Everyone here started with no experience and needed help from somebody; we all had to start somewhere.

Oh, I'm interested. The initial idea I had was for a small principality that was essentially an oasis in the middle of a desert, possibly between the Golden Edge, the Meshlands and Lake Mitra, and while it would have little to no military forces save a small, basic militia, it WOULD supply the other principalities with copius slave labor.

The idea behind that is that the principality, which I was planning on naming The Tesra Lowlands, would be home to an exotic fruit which acts like a very potent aphrodisiac, causing massive overpopulation due to the populace being under its effects, and in a desert environment, would make it so that not only the birth-rates would be high, but so would the death-rates. One of the previous Princes would have made a deal between the others: To preserve the scarce resources as well as provide a reason to keep them safe, they would provide slave labor from those that would otherwise starve, or those of the lower class.

As for planning my Prince, I would definitely feel that thats best done in private, until if and when I finally post a character sheet.

It'd probably be best to just go along with Sul'giat, though I'm not clear on whether or not they're a fully unified kingdom or a collection of territories with varying attitutes. If they're the former, my domain should've logically been completely streamrolled, but if my domains enemy was an isolated province from wherever with no others supporting it that might make more sense.

Whatever you reckon is the easiest and best option is I'll go with it, but I really do want to somehow keep the big backstory war as part of my domains history though. It's a massive reason for it's current situation and that of my character.

Sul'giat is barely united; you have the legacy of castle towns and garrison by former slaves, then you have nomads who descend from the pirates from the Golden Edge. The towns are loosely tied to one another and control the nation, but the tribes are unpredictable and uncontrollable; some strike out on their own turf or outside to Mons Caelos or Ancier to slake their bloodlust and greed. Control over territory gained or lost from Sul'giat may flip-flop; the nomads could raid the land killing most soldiers and forcing them to rout - regardless of whose side their own. And if they do try taking over land, they'll quickly forego all control, leaving the towns they've pillaged to whoever grasps the reins first. Also keep in mind that the nobility ruling Sul'giat are opportunistic and will likely jump on any land raided by the nomads.

In terms of backstory, using Sul'giat - or more specifically the nomads - as your enemy may keep your war intact as relations could deteriorate due to the nation's inability to rein in the tribes. In fact it could bolster your backstory due to its unpredictable nature.

[spoiler =Just testing the waters. Full sheet to follow on confirmation...]
Name: Jon Shannow

Age: 25

Gender: Male

Position: Prince

Appearance: Jon is cuts a sharp, memorable figure; his fine, fashionable clothes emphasise his lean, athletic build and their flow moves perfectly with his lithe, feline movement. His skin is pale, and shock of elegantly chaotic jet black hair falls just so above sharp eyes, a strong nose and the sardonic curve of his mouth.
Mostly he dresses for leisure, but he has several sets of battle gear that are no less beautiful for being the best protection available.

Personality: to come

Background: The Shannow's are a line of rulers, and have owned the lands and castles of the Southern Notch as long as anyone can remember. Their noble blood has bred true, and when mingled with similarly high stock has come to produce Jon, the latest is a long line of lords who only recently have been given the title of Prince.
Though he is young, Jon is well suited to the role that fate has given him. His charisma and unshakable self-assurance give him an air of power that draws castellians and even other Princes to his banner. Since the power of the New King finally gave way, Jon has taken swift,m decisive steps; his cavalry rode forth form the notch and subdued the surrounding towns and villages, bringing under his sway all the land between the Notch and Lake Mitra, while at the same time launching raids into the peninsula for a constant stream of booty and slaves to aid the consolidation of power within the Kingdom.
Jon now has four castellians under his direct command, and out of the consortium of Princes knows that at least two will follow his word without question.

Name: Archytas of Balacrus

Age: 56

Gender: Male

Appearance: A strong build coupled with graying hair and thick beard with a reddish tinge, Fierce brown eyes mask the aging weathered face. Clothing is practical not flamboyant nor expensive, the inner layer of his clothing is simple elk hide covered with fine White wolf pelts. Golden pendant of the sun on the front and on the back the moon is hung around his neck.

Position (Prince, landlord, or castellian): Prince

Background/Personality/Domain:

"The Balacs could rule the land, The God-King did, he took an army from Golden edge till there was nothing left to conquer, the land was his. But the God-King is dead, his Empire is gone and so we live in evil times, The Crowned-King is false, not worthy to wipe his own shit and yet claims the God-Kings thrown as his own. The men of the Mons Caelos have turned on each other instead of their proper enemies, those who envied the God-Kings power. The God-King must weep for his children. The day dawns, what was may come again, The God-King still controls the will of man, so now perhaps he wishes the land to be great again? perhaps a new King will take up the sword in his stead? Bring order, remake the world in the image of the God-Kings dream?

The Balacs could do it, my people are beloved by the God-King, a proud boast but true all the same, before my grandfather's grandfather my people have lived in the Meshlands, these are good places, life is abundant, there is no finer soil in all of Mons Caelos, the prey plentiful, our farmers are the envy of the known world and bring much needed coin to our coffers. Our glorious capital of Miesk stands out amongst the largest of the meshland villages, North of the sloping rivers, its mead halls and temples are the finest constructed the strongest of oak. our peoples Villages are simple, for the simple life brings one closer to the God-King, the most prosperous of these villages are Roystiv upon the northern river of the meshland famed for its agriculture. Hodgri, tucked into the mountains of the meshlands, famed for its hardy warriors and Polotsk withing the protecting of both villages and the capital, the religious centre of our people, containing our greatest preachers, temples and thinkers. Our gods live here in the trees and in the rivers, Within the temples to our God-King he whispers to us on the winds. But there are those who disturb the gods, burn the forests, kill our wives, children, livestock. The Crowned-King and Castllians promised protection bah! Golden lies. There will be no peace, no peace with men of Stone, Iron and Lies.

So we Fight, we fight to restore the land to its former glory. No other armies rival the size of our ranks, the land provides for its ever-growing people who swell the ranks. Our boots make the earth itself shake. Let other tremble behind walls of stone and armor, we fight on the plains, the hills, the forests. Courage is our shield and armor, no people are keener with a bow nor fleet of foot than our people and who else can say they have the blessing of the God-King? There are others, outsiders, yearn for the days of the God-King. These men i call my brother, Alliances will be sought with those who honored the God-King in life. Perhaps my people can restore the land and usher in the old age once more, Perhaps but not yet, we bide our time and wait for the orders of the God-King echoing on the wind."

And thaaaat, is my entry. If i've trodden on some toes with the domain location just say and ill change it, i've tried my best to get an idea where everyone is on the map but its all very confusing.

Ill change anything if i've done goofed on it such a political structure and what have you

Actually you've brought up something I've been meaning to bring up for quite some time. Once we have nine or more people on board, I'm going to give the map over so you can draw out your domain. Castellians get first pick in placing their cities, followed by the Princes to draw the borders of their principality, and finally the landlords get to carve their provinces from the principalities. If anything intersects between Principalities or provinces, the common folk in it will be squabbling against one another due to territory issues.

Anyway, I like your character's backstory, but I have to inform you that Ancier controls most of the Meshlands. The map shows the nation's borderline; Ancier is in the Southwestern area. I'd accept your character, but you'll have to relocate some of your villages.

That's a forest. If you like you could include that in your domain.

This is the shape of a potential Lord Shannow. he's in about the same place, to avoid too much land-difficulty, but I'm gonna keep them both as possibilities until I see the bigger picture in terms of player diversity...

I'm working on that. I'm partially leaning towards determining certain outcomes like spy detection by dice roll, but I could be open to persuasion or convincing. If you have any suggestions feel free to let me know.
