the ps3 that came before the slim, the 160 gig can play Playstation One games?

Only if you download the ps2 add on, and make sure you make a Playstation one memory card

i don't think that is accurate... as far as I know the 20 gig and 60 gig first gen consoles are the only ones that can play PS1/PS2 games because they have all the PS2 hardware built in.

What Daedalus said. They can all play PS1 games via emulation (you just use the firmware to create a memory card).
Frustratingly you can also make PS2 memory cards but unless you have one of the early PS3 units (anything before last year I believe) you can't play PS2 games. The original units had PS2 hardware, the slightly later units can do software emulation. After that, you've got nothing.

And that's why I wanted to buy one of the first models. This way, I can replay all my PS2 and PS1 games without having to start any other consoles.
