The Purge: Election Year is coming at the perfect time, but it's just an okay movie.

I'm probably seeing it anyway because the second one was entertaining. With that said...

The Purge rules specifically state that government officials are illegal to target even in The Purge. Does the movie address that at all?

I really appreciate the sheer balls of this movie to just come out and advertise itself as some sort of satire of Donald Trump's candidacy. Keep America Great, using the word "trump" repeatedly in marketing. I don't know if this angle is pushed in the movie, or if it was just something advertising came up with, but you have to admire something that's that goddamn brazen.

That was my first thought, it said something about "officials beyond level X" being un-purgable as part of the basic premise. Seems like they are breaking their own rules.

I'm still bothered by this premise, just because it still hasn't answered what happens if I set a forest fire during the Purge, and then five days later it's still killing people. Can I be prosecuted for that?

Am I the only one who thinks he whole premise of the Purge is conceptually stupid? I was turned off by the in-your-face ham-fisted messaging from the promos of this movie and the last one, saying "Hey! Americans! You're all a bunch of fucking psychopaths!" And what's it say about the writer who thinks this is a good idea of "fun"?

Even though I like Anarchy, and hate the original movie, you are not exactly wrong. I guess what helps me get through the 2nd movie, and later on Election year, is that they're the closest Manhunt movies we will ever get. Except there are no snuff films elements. Also, Frank Grillo makes a pretty good Punisher.

The movies may have been successful, but so far they haven't lived up to the promise of the setting. I think the biggest issue that it is such a stupid and unbelievable idea and the other is that they don't show anything to explain the setting.

So all crime "up to and including murder" is permitted. But for some reason it is ONLY murder that happens. Why isn't there a load of people and/or kids being sexually assaulted? I mean Sodom and Gamorrah level of hedonism here. Why isn't there looting/arson? Why aren't there tons of thieves profiting from the right to steal anything legally? No, only murder. It's basically a stupid setup for a horror movie where people are killed. I'd like to see a diamond heist where the criminals can steal anything and the law PROTECTS the thieves from legal prosecution.

Don't mistake, I didn't think the films were bad. They were alright. Good 7s I would say. But it's a silly setting that makes no sense. I mean which people, anywhere in the world, would elect a government that legalises killing them? Yes, I'd love for you to make it legal for anyone to kill me and my family with no repercussions, that sounds fun.

I get the idea, they've contrived a reason for people to give in to their "animal nature" without such petty things as the justice system getting in the way. But the movies do a terrible job of portraying it, wasting the idea on a poor horror/thriller.

I've just lambasted the premise, you guys aren't the only ones. The second film does make *an* attempt of one-upping the idea by making it a government ploy to manage population numbers. The net result of the "Purge" is always that poor and/or homeless people are killed in greatest numbers. But I agree it is totally preposterous. No one would elect a government that won't protect them from crime and for a night where all crime is permitted, remarkably only killing seems to happen.

I think you have to suspend disbelief a little more than usual for these films.

Meh, I hated the first one, the second one was decent, although as many have pointed out, still full of holes, (biggest one being if all crime is legal, why is murder the only thing that ever happens?), this third one just seems like a desperate cash grab latching on to the absolute fucking joke that American politics have become, though if its at least better than the first one...maybe I'll check it out if I'm bored for an afternoon

What really gets me about the entire concept of The Purge, is how it lasted more than 2 or 3 years. There's no way that there wouldn't be a gigantic house cleaning of just about anyone stupid/crazy enough to go out a-murderin', stealing or destroying.

Inter gang conflicts would see gangs liquefy wholesale overnight because they'd be able to try and exterminate the other guys without restriction, people would be able to freely and openly kill people trying to take their stuff(You don't think banks wouldn't hire people to just shoot everyone on sight that gets close to the bank during purging hours?). Vigilantes would take to the streets specifically to 'remove' anyone causing trouble, etc.

That, and I have a hard time believing that the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a single person with 12 hours of unrestricted playtime could wrack up wouldn't scuttle the economy over a few iterations, let alone if more than one person got a "lets destroy everything" idea rolling.

There's absolutely no way the system would persist on any meaningful scale for more than a year or two before anyone that'd bother to take part in it is dead, or afraid of being dead to do it or the country implodes upon itself.

Is it not, arguably, rather good film-making to manipulate the audience's position like that?

Also gosh that picture with the fellow in the Lincoln mask around the corner makes it look like a stage musical.

Ooo hey sequel hook. The lady wanting to end the purge gets the presidency, but gets persuaded to let it run for another year with the intention of manipulating it so all the people blocking her outlawing it get purged.

I had avoided this movie series for a few years, because of the silly premise. I finally saw the first Purge movie and liked it. I still haven't seen the 2nd movie. Well, most of the 2nd movie. I did see the last 5 minutes of the movie while I was waiting for the next movie to come on that cable channel.

I feel The Purge: Election Year opens up a big can of worms addressing social issues that confronts our society. Just like the Hunger Games, I don't think the audience really cares or understands the social commentary that the movie is making. They just enjoy a well-made action movie with horror elements. Mainly, jump scares and some gruesome kill scenes. I liked it. I think there are some quality discussions can be had about what this movie series addresses. Mainly, class warfare. Just on a popcorn level of enjoyment, The Purge: Election Year is a solid thriller worth seeing.

Your moral dilemmas amuse me as well as mean nothing to Holywood executives with a half-decent IP in their hands. She could survive and win the election and be the only person left on the f*cking planet and we'd still get another Purge movie in 2-3 years.

This angle feels on par with the people that, after the first movie, said that this could "totally happen".

"All crime, including murder, is now legal."

That right there shows how fucking juvenile and idiotic this movie is. They seem to think that murder is the worst thing ever, and they're not even remotely subtle about it.

Yeah, I know a lot of things worse then murder, I mean there's that expression 'A fate worse than death'.

I know if I was going through a purge night murder wouldn't be the first thing on my mind (only people I'd want dead would probably have good security), I'd be more concerned with legally stealing myself all the stuff I want and I'm sure most people wouldn't descend into orgies of violence for the sake of violence. Sure there would be violence, but more in the Black Friday 'I'm going to get me a new TV so don't get in my way' style.

Also I don't think it would take a politician's family being killed for someone to want to stop the purge, I'm sure the outcry after all the reports after the first time of child murder, child prostitution, child rape, child exploitation, child cannibalism and children buying porn & mature computer games would get enough people protesting the whole concept of all crime being legal for one night as a good thing for society.

Why don't people just go on vacation that overlaps with purge night? I mean this movie is about a Senator right? I understand the poor and lower class not being able to do that (hence the running theme of the series) but she clearly has money. So just... leave.

Either that, or just buy a silly mask and walk happily around as one of them.
