It's both. The far left and the far right both push an authoritarian agenda and seek to force their extremism upon the general populace, and sometimes their objectives align. They want the same thing in this case, just for different but equally stupid reasons.
It's almost like authoritarianism is our enemy.

I mean, MAYBE, but I'm just a left wing socialist soyboy into cuckoldry and wanting to have my wife given over to Muslims. What do I know?

I just saw that Valve has decided to allow all games on their Steam DRM platform.
With a usual backlash from supposedly gamer journalists. Or is that game journalists (in name) only..

<youtube=JmRjuAMwjv0>

I don't think this counts as a necro. Only a slight bump with relevant news, hopefully.

Well, I'm pretty sure that won't go horribly wrong at all... /s

Don't be surprised if bureaucrats dogpile on them from left and right anytime soon.

So their solution to a problem that came about because of their lack of quality control and oversight is to...have even less quality control and oversight. Yeah, this is going to backfire on them in record time and they're going to be STUNNED when it happens because they're that oblivious. I've said it before, Valve is run by middle-aged adults who desperately want to remain in the mindset of their college days. It's pathetic, the very definition of arrested development.

You can always turn to EA Origin or U-Play or the Microsoft store if you are so sorely in need for quality control.

And A Handmaiden's Tale (as well as history) told us that radical left wing AND right wing elements were often cross paths and work together as their goals can go hand-in-hand at times.

Lewd/Sexy material is one such area where they do cross over.

If anything this is another lesson that in politics, your friend today will easily turn around and stab you in the back to work together to accomplish their greater ideological goals.

Or the PSN, or Xbox Live Marketplace, or GOG.com, or Nintendo eShop. Yeah, not hard to play that (predictably flawed) card. Here's the thing, what Valve is saying is nothing new. It's the same technolibertine garbage Google tries to espouse in regards to their algorithms being easily hijacked and why there's a plethora of racist or misogynist channels currently clogging Youtube or why Twitter is having a problem with bots, or I need say nothing more about how Zuckerberg got roasted in Congress over Facebook refusing to moderate. Furthermore Valve's reaction (doubling down) is not going to work, it's just gonna make things worse for them and blow up in their face the next time a controversy come around. Because that's what ALWAYS happens with situations like this.

When somebody generalises by saying Conservatives ban games, that's misrepresentation and insulting. When you throw exactly the same accusation towards a different political group, it's all well and good.
How is pointing out the fact that for the past few years the push against games has been from socialists anything other then pointing out the fact that, well, it's been years since there was a major push from a different source. In the first world at least.
You can throw the accusation, but then you can't complain about politically-generalising insults. Or you can complain about politically-generalising insults, but then you can't throw the accusation. You can do one or the other; to do both is transparent hypocrisy.
Except again, pointing out that over the past few years its been socialists trying to ban games they don't like isn't hypocritical of me in the slightest, it would be hypocritical if I was stating that only socialists try to ban games, or that it's somehow different when conservatives try to ban games, but I did neither, only point out a fact, one that makes my wing of politics look bad to boot.

I know this place has had a long history of English-to-English translations problems, but this is a new one.
Which socialists exactly did this?
Lenin. He famously hated video games, and had them all burned during the October revolution.

Is this actually a bad thing? I mean they will keep working on the tools users can use to filter out crap they aren't interested in and so far it seems like those work pretty well. I know Jim always bitches about the flood of crap on steam but I literally only see those when I look at unfiltered upcoming lists, none of them show up at all in my recommended or anything like that. I'm really not seeing how this is the doom and gloom end of pc gaming.

It is a bad thing; the idea of trying to put moderation into the "hands of the people" has been tried before. And it's always backfired. As we saw with the visual novels fiasco it doesn't work. And that wasn't the first time it happened, it was just the most recent incident in a history of incidents.

Are you talking about the "purge" of them we were worried about at the start of this thread? I mean cause valves response is directly to that. Now they won't let users decide what should be on steam unless its trolling or illegal. And they seem to have removed some trolling games already like the aids simulator and a few other "simulator" "games." But they will no longer care about content otherwise. We shall see how far that goes though by the time true porn games start to show up, I mean ones that don't need a patch.

Whoop-dee-doo, that's what is called "token effort." It might work for a little bit, but it's going to collapse in the long run because the kind of system they've advocated is very easy to exploit. It's why Google is being scorched for their refusal to moderate Youtube, why @jack is getting raked over the coals for the racism and hate speech rampant on Twitter, and of course there's Zuck getting grilled by Congress about his incompetence when it came to the glut of fake news on people's feeds.

Valve is not acting, they're merely reacting. And the only reason they're reacting in the first place is because they were being rightfully slammed for their unwillingness to act like professionals instead of middle-aged men with the minds of college kids. It's the same kind of "free market" philosophy that's historically backfired in every industry that's tried it. And when they come crying it bites them (AGAIN!) they'll have no one but themselves to blame. Welcome to Rapture

And every company faces controversy when they get bigger to the point migitation is the new policy. Steam chose the side of the devs and customers over the critics in this decision and no one is holding a gun to your head in such a situation. But EA has made it clear that no matter what kind of content let it be the san fran walking sim or the rice bowl dev vns from a Japanese studio would worry about their games being delisted because of people with political agendas.

If you?re going to cite a work of literature, try to get the title correct.

Well that's objectively false. Case in point: Blossom Tales: the Sleeping King, a Zelda-like in the vein of "Why doesn't Nintendo just put their games on PC", which sold twenty time more copies in 3 months on the Switch's curated shop than it sold in a year on Steam's landfill of a site.

Hell, it doubled it's Steam sales on the Switch's launch day. I know which platform I'd rather be on if I were a dev.

It reminds me of the penultimate question of whom or what is governing people in a Godless society. As flawed as man-made religion is, the general premise typically keeps people in line.

I don't understand anyone who would take issue with steam's approach. Just turn on the filters and let people who like what you don't be in peace. You don't have to care about what other people play and its mere existence both doesn't affect you and won't be somehow undone if the game is not sold on steam because it will be sold somewhere anyhow.

Remember, all those visual novels are ports of Japanese games which have been available for years (decades in some cases). They existed for all this time and you were fine and nothing bad happened to you. Surely their continued existence isn't going to somehow do anything to negatively impact your life all of a sudden when it didn't do anything for all this time.
