So I went to Jacksonville, Florida to attend a Halloween party at Battalion Airsoft Arena. While there I learned a lesson, fingerless gloves that you picked up at Wall-Mart are NOT appropriate hand wear for airsoft. While playing a domination game I tried to lean around a corner (right hand dominant, G36C mind) and got a left hand full of BBs. My entire hand was screaming, but the part that got it worst was my thumb, which now has a circular tear with bad bruising and a blister filled with blood. I stayed on the sidelines for most of the time I was there waiting for the pain to subside. Mind you I'm A) a coward afraid of theme park rides and B) a guy who has ditched sports in the past due to laziness and lack of interest, but I still intend to keep playing in the future and indeed went back out one more time after getting some better gloves, some ibiprofin, and a band-aid. So what sports injuries do you guys have to share?

Edit: What the hell Escapist? I tried to post once and got a 404 error message making it hard to tell if it went through and double posted.

I have injured myself on three separate occasions in sports this year (I'm only 28 for crying out loud!):

March: Sharp pain in my ankle while playing soccer (toughed through it for the second half because I'm not smart). Woke up the next morning and was on crutches for three days due to not being able to put any weight on my right ankle. Eventually went to the doctor; tendinitis in the ankle. Sidelined for two months.

May: Hurt my wrist playing golf. I swung my driver and dipped it just a smidge too low (I'm pretty new at golf). The head slammed into the ground on the down swing so the entire force of my swing went through the club into my wrist. Eventually bit the bullet and paid to see an Ortho after two months of pain still in the wrist; sprained wrist and required a hand brace for a month. Total injury time was three months.

September: Sharp pain in my knee while playing Ultimate Frisbee. I was smarter this time as I only did one more play before I realized I really should stop. Pain in the knee and it hurt to walk (but at least I could walk; see above). Went to the Ortho last week; my old buddy tendinitis has returned except in the knee this time. I still have pain today and my healing time is expected to be three more weeks or so.

Good God I'm fragile this year. I sure as hell hope that this isn't going to be a recurring theme in my life...

I've had more than a few.

1. Injured my left knee playing waterpolo. I got fouled by three guys at once underwater and while I was trying to swim out of the dogpile that had ensued I kicked my leg out and somehow managed to bend it at the knee in the incorrect direction (it somehow managed to bend to the side). This injury caused me to quit waterpolo and I've had a weak left knee ever since (10 years). It probably didn't help that I started running track a few months later and did hurdles, which puts a lot of stress on your knees.

2. Running hurdles I injured myself countless times. Lots of sprains, lots of falls. The two worst ones were probably the time I fractured my wrist and the time that I bruised my ribs. Nothing too exciting, both were caused by people in other lanes tripping and falling into me at speed.

3. I weight lift and have injured myself a couple of times. Nothing too bad thankfully but about 3 months ago I managed to injure my teres major (a muscle below my shoulder-blade). The pain wasn't too bad, unless I tried to breath in deeply. That sucked pretty hard. It took 3 weeks of constant rest to heal and caused my to lose a bunch of progress on my bench press.

Yeah, I'm not really good about resting after sports injuries. I've had a few times when I ran races with one or both sprained ankles. It's a habit that has definitely not helped me in life since it just means that my recovery ends up taking longer.

Wow this is topical, I hurt my knee about 8 months ago playing Lacrosse for my Under 18's team. Because we were going over to Australia to play in their National Tournament in about 12 days, I decided to just power through the pain with some anti inflammatories and painkillers. Afterwards I went to go see a physiotherapist, and he thought that maybe I had problems with my kneecap gliding. Like it was getting caught on something and causing swelling. After a few months of trying to rest and doing some low impact exercise to strengthen my leg, I was told it was possibly a meniscal cyst, and was reccomended to a sports specialist.

After getting some x rays and an MRI scan performed it was found that my meniscal tissue had a tear and i had developed a cyst in my knee thanks to some meniscal fluid leaking out of my joint.

I had surgery a few weeks ago to hopefully repair the tissue, but it was found theyd have to just remove the damaged section of the tissue, meaning Ill possibly have more knee problems later in life (ie in my 50's). But I can walk without pain now, and thats pretty nice, although Im not able to play sport for a while :/

Football (Europe) is a bad sport!
I've twisted both my knees more or less out of place so I've required sticks to walk.
Then of course my ankles have taken a lot of damage also. I'm one of those who dislike the filming part in football... but sometimes it'd be good to just jump out of the way!

I also do some training in the gym, and when trying to beat my maximum record (was still young and dumb) my left shoulder jumped out of place so the whole thing fell on my chest, I'm damn lucky I didn't get hurt more and the left shoulder jumped immediately back into place.

But nothing major, life threathening :D

I've had lots of injuries from playing soccer. Besides the usual twisted ankles and bruises, I've also fucked up both of my knees, tripped over someone and somersaulted through the air knocking myself out for a few seconds, and I've nearly dislocated both shoulders just by taking the throw ins.

Biggest bruise I got was from playin cricket. I was fielding at squar leg and the batter smashed the ball straight at me, I stopped it with the inside of my thigh (a reflex from playing soccer). I had a bruise that covered my whole thigh for weeks.

I have broken my ribs, my left hand and my right leg when I played ice hockey (I used to be the Goalie). I also once had concussion playing rugby in school. It probably won't surprise anyone when I say I don't play those sports any more.

Snapped my collar bone playing football once. Scrum near the opposing net, ball goes free in front of basically an open goal, me and a mate both run for it, I get the first and score (so it was obvs worth it) but a split second later my mate, who's three times my size, slams into my side at full pelt.

Lemme tell ya, broken clavicles really suck.

Karma prevailed though, when he also broke his clavicle about a week later playing rugby. In fact, he had it worse, seeing as the medic attending him on the field initially mistook his injury for a dislocated shoulder, and started moving his arm around while sharp fragments of bone cut up his insides. Just thinking about it makes me wince. :S

The worst injury I had was when playing basketball and some guy who was about four times my size (in weight, not height) decided to try to jump over me from behind. His weight, combined with the way I twisted as it happened, was enough for me to dislocate a joint in my lower back. Initially I ignored it, but my inability to get any power behind my free throws directly after the foul let me know that it was serious. Still, it took about a month before I finally went to a doctor, during which I tried playing basketball but was often having to sit out due to the pain.

After that, I've had innumerable ankle injuries while playing soccer, basketball, and ultimate frisbee. I have a very weak right ankle, so it is very easy to do something that forces me to sit out of activities. It has completely stopped me from playing soccer, but I'm still able to push through most other sports.

I also did something to one of my fingers a couple months ago while playing football and could barely type on a computer for a couple weeks. I've dislocated my elbow a couple times playing basketball. I also once had a guy throw his arm into my neck while playing basketball, and I found it hard to breathe for a while after that, but in terms of sports injuries, that was rather short lasting.

Four years of American-style football and rodeo in high school has left me with two very bad knees and a left shoulder that screams when the temperature drops below 60...or its about to rain. In one night, riding saddle bronc when I was 16, I broke three ribs, rolled an ankle and separated the bones in my left hand. I was in bad shape.

Seven months later, I was padding up for summer practice in football. The dumb things you do when you're a kid and too stupid to know you're not bulletproof.

Haven't been injured playing sports, but I have an injury that makes playing sports terrible for me. One time my friend was tripping unreasonably hard, had gotten upstairs in a house we were in, and took off sprinting for the top of the stairs when we got up to make sure he didn't do that exact thing. To stop him from tumbling down, I put him in the ground, but only had time to do that by wrenching him out of a sprint, into the air, and onto the ground wholly with my lower back. I've had sharp pains there whenever I exert too much ever since, so sports isn't really in my repertoire of "things I can do" anymore. He probably would've died if I'd let him hit those stairs at full charge, and I've never been much into sports anyway, so oh well.

Bonespurs in the ankle joint from playing soccer (shin guards don't protect your joint perfectly and taking a number of cleats to the ankle caused bone chips that later reformed as spurs), back issues from multiple tackles/hits in football, dent in my right tibia from a bike accident... those are all the sports related injuries not to mention the other non-sport related injuries... I'm a mess.

I've had my share of injuries from Muay Thai. Pretty much all of my most serious injuries have been to the head. I've been knocked unconscious at least 5 times (2 of those were in my first amateur fight), but I've never been out for more than a second or two. I've also never had any permanent brain damage, as an MRI I recently took can attest to.

My most serious non-head injury came from when I took a knee to the ribs. There was no visible external damage, and I didn't have to go to the hospital or anything, but for the first week or so, I couldn't even go for a light jog for 5 minutes without my ribs starting to hurt. Took maybe a month or so to fully heal.

I knocked out my last milktooth in a rugby match in school. The guy I collided with was rubbing his shoulder and wincing, while I just stood up and spat out a tooth. I've never felt like such a rock-hard bastard as then, and I've probably never looked as idiotic as then.

I don't really feel like doing any sports now that it's entirely optional and up to me, but I still miss our rugby games. It was a sport I was any good at, at least.

I don't know if this really counts as sports, but I did have one close call last year.

The last two summers I've been working as a canoe guide. The first summer I did this, we were on an infamously difficult portage trail. Towards the end of the trail, there is about a ten foot 75 degree rock face that we had to go down (no way around it). Instead of doing the sensible thing and waiting for somebody to come behind me to help me slowly slide the canoe down the wet rock face, I, in my infinite wisdom, decided to just go for it. In two steps, I, predictably, slip and have an eighty pound canoe land on my head.

I'm honestly surprised I didn't get more hurt. All that really happened was that I had a stiff neck for a couple of days. Just looking back, there were so many tiny things that could have gone differently where things would have been much, much worse.

I remembered having a small concussion when I played ultimate frisbee in high school. I didn't saw the frisbee and a guy jumped to catch it. I don't how his elbow landed on my head, but I remember my head hurting for a week.
