The stars at night are real bright when there's no light deep in the heart of Texas.

Massive blackouts in winter in a place that gets below 0 Celsius? Going to find a lot of frozen bodies in a week or two?
Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think that as a major oil producer, Texans would mainly use natural gas to heat their homes.

So Texas has their power grid setup completely independent of the rest of the country because they didn't want to have to follow the Federal Requirements for their power grids and shit as stated earlier in the thread.

I can't say this for sure because my source is "Random People on Twitter" but evidently one of those pesky old ruining good old fashioned Bootstrap Pullin Up Free Market Killing regulations is that your power setup all needs to be winterized so that they don't all go tits up when it gets super cold and snowy out...

It's a good thing it can never ever get cold in Texas or they'd feel rather silly right about now...

Texas resident here. We've been without power for over 24 hours now. It popped back on once or twice for about a half-hour at a time, not long enough to actually get our indoor temperature above 50 degrees. We ran out of firewood yesterday and there’s none to be bought anywhere near us. Gas stations are closed on the iced over roads because the second largest state in the country has fewer than 800 plows/salt trucks TOTAL for this “unlikely’ eventuality we’ve found ourselves in. I’m from Ohio, so I’m used to the temperatures and the snow; what I’m NOT used to is gross incompetence laid bare by a state for whom pride is its number one defining quality and believes secession and independence are perfectly sustainable. Hell has literally frozen over, and I’m stuck in it.

I'm not joking when I say that books give off a lot of heat when you burn them, especially cheapish paperbacks and Harry Potter books. Like, if you've got a bunch of books you aren't going to read again.

Git y'self an axe and cut down a tree. The exercise will keep you warm until you can burn the wood. That's pioneer spirit.

At a sandwich shop that has electricity and wifi. Lost my power this morning. And I'm a bit surprised this place is empty and open.

I'm in the so-called Red Wall, and it does get enacted here, but I don't know how successful it is. Homeless pop. in Newcastle seems to have grown a lot in the last ten years.
I agree that there do seem to be more about than there used to be. It's not on the same scale as it is in Sheffield, my uni city, though. The scale of the deprivation there is shocking, and the statistics say it doesn't even begin to compare to bits of London.

Christ. I don't think Sheffield's even in the top 20 most deprived areas in the UK.

And if you really want to experience societal failure writ large, you probably want to try Blackpool, large tracts of Liverpool and Merseyside, and some areas of the northeast like Middlesborough.

And here I am in the liberal hellscape that is California. It was 65 degrees today. I walked my dog wearing a tee-shirt.

Well, don't worry, Texans. Your local government representatives are listening with a sympathetic ear and a... and a... ha ha ha ha ha. Nope, couldn't get that out with a straight face.

"The week will perish": https://ktxs.com/news/local/colorado-city-mayor-resigns-after-controversial-facebook-post
The government:

"No one owes you or your family anything; nor is it the local governments responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim, it’s your choice! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING! I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn hand out! If you don’t have electricity you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm and safe. If you have no water you deal with out and think outside of the box to survive and supply water to your family. If you were sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are sitting there waiting for someone to come rescue you because your lazy is direct result of your raising! Only the strong will survive and the week will perish. Folks, God Has given us the tools to support ourselves in times like this. This is sadly a product of a socialist government where they feed people to believe that the FEW work and others will become dependent for handouts. Am I sorry that you have been dealing without electricity and water; yes! But I’ll be damned if I’m going to provide for anyone that is capable of doing it themselves! We have lost sight of those in need and those that take advantage of the system and mesh them into one group!! Bottom line, quit crying and looking for a handout! Get off your ass and take care of your own family! "

Also the government:

"Pay us our fucking tax money!"

I guess he was too stupid to know the agreement. We pay taxes, you take care of things in an emergency, if they are unable to do that then why pay taxes.

If you're wondering why neighboring states can't just pipe power in because the lines are still in relatively good shape and it's generation that's the problem, the answer is stereotypically Texas: They can't.

Texas has an isolated energy grid for stupid Independent Texas reasons. Like, if this happened in Montana, and, say, the rivers froze so bad we couldn't use our huge amounts of hydro power, we could theoretically import power from Alberta or Idaho or Wyoming or whatever. (I mean, we probably couldn't because we export as much power as we use, so there'd probably not be much we could import, but the physics are sound)

Texas, for the same reason as I hate Texas, decided it was better off with its own power grid, which is free from federal regulation because it basically doesn't have an interstate connection. https://www.texastribune.org/2011/02/08/texplainer-why-does-texas-have-its-own-power-grid/
So they can't import power on any useful scale.
Hey it's fine, they are totally self-sufficient, they can secede whenever they want. They don't need no help from anyone else. God, 'Murica, and the Lone Star Flag is all they need, and rugged, determined individualism!
