The story of Fallout: New Vegas falls apart near the end (help explain it please)

Disclaimer: this post is about the New Vegas storyline and is filled with spoiler. If you don't want to be spoiled, stop reading this post.

I built myself a very social character, with high Charisma and high Speech. During the Ring-a-Ding-Ding! I talked my way to the Penthouse with Benny. I liked his idea of an independent New Vegas and agreed to help him with this. So we part our ways and he tells me to meet him at the ground floor.

Going there, I find out that he ran away with the Chip. Why the hell did he do that? We had a perfectly good conversation in which I convinced him of a couple of thing using high Speech, and then he runs of? Why? What's even worse is that he's taken capture by Legion and that whatever option I take, he ends up dead. The only way to make Benny's idea of an independent New Vegas happen is to get Benny killed. That doesn't make any sense at all!

Can someone explain me why Benny would want to "betray" me even though I'm offering to help him, and why Benny needs to be dead even if I want an independent New Vegas as well? I could understand this if it were for a lack of Speech skill that I'm missing some options, but I'm at 100% and succeeded on all checks.

This really is a game breaker for me. The story just doesn't hold up. I'm really hoping someone can explain this to me.

Benny is a cowardly, backstabbing asshole who would do anything to get what he wants. Most likely after gaining independance with him he would kill you anyway and take over himself. You can still create an independant New vegas without him though, all you need is Yes Man, Benny is useless anyway, he can't fight, he makes stupid decisions and just can't be trusted.

Well,

A) Benny's a dick.

B) YOU are the focus of the game. YOU are the one who will (however unrealistically) alter the face of the Mojave.

That's basically it. It's written that way because that's how the majority of gamers want it.

For one, you're not even close to the end of the game. Also, the game assumes that you wouldn't want to ally with the guy who shot you in the head. That's just common sense.

Protip: He's the kind of person who shoots people in the face.

Even though he may or may not trust you, he'd believe that he would be more successful solo. And if that's a game breaker for you, then wow. You have some stupidly high standards.

I suppose it's his character. Benny is one of the biggest assholes in the Mojave and used you in order to get the chip for his own means. I suppose he really did trick you. An extra layer of character/ story, I suppose? Still, I get what you're saying, but with the focus on being with you, having Benny taking a lot of the screen-time would be strange. Though, having Benny as a companion for a 'Evil Independent' playthrough...Then again, at the end, he'd probably shoot you in the face again.
At least you can still establish an independent NV through your own means.

That might actually be a reasonable and acceptable explanation. That Benny is just scum and that he doesn't trust anyone, even if I pick the option to forgive him (after which he ambushes me). But I still feel the game mechanic should allow me to convince him to trust me. I've lied and cheated my way trough the game up to here, and all of a sudden someone doesn't trust me? This seems too hardcoded in the storyline to be acceptable.

One thing that's unclear to me then: Where was he heading before he got captured by Legion? What was his plan? What was he himself going to do with the Chip?

There is a very important plot point smack in the middle of Legion camp concerning the chip. If you didn't discover that already I don't want to spoil it or anything, but you are nowhere near the end of game.

He was going to use the platinum chip to destroy Mr House's army of Securitrons which can only be accessed using the platinum chip. Mr House's army is located right beneath Fortification Hill.

I built a character around social interaction. And because I did this I have to follow Benny all the way to Legion and do a bunch of quests to get the Chip. A combat oriented character however can just blast his way trough the casino, and pick up the Chip from Benny's body. It feels like I'm being punished for picking a social character. And for a social character to be betrayed, it just feels wrong.

I know that from Yes Man. But surely Benny knew just as well that Legion built a camp right on top of it? Or wasn't he aware of that?

Sometimes gunning is the best option in that game, sometimes talking is. But neither is perfect. You may as well complain that you can't negotiate terms of surrender with Cazadores.

On that note, why the heck would YOU trust HIM...? He shot you in the f'cking head and left you for dead!!
I always kill that dick, and i enjoy it every time.

But back to topic. I guess you just can't trust a lair/murderer. No matter how much of a silver tongue you might have, he will still be a bastard.

But there must be several situations you can talk your way out of that a combat character can't, you win some you lose some. You can't have things perfectly your own way in every situation you encounter. Also, Benny shot you in the face and left you in a shallow grave! I think that by doing that, he is subtly telling you he can't be trusted.

Benny's in it for himself. He wants to become the self-appointed 'king' of New Vegas. At least, that's my take ;)

Yes he did know the Legion had their main camp there, he went in using a stealth boy but stille ended up being caught.
