The Suffering Offered for Free

Surreal Software's 2004 survival horror game has been released online for free to promote the upcoming feature film.

Next year, MTV Films will release The Suffering, a movie based on the Midway game of the same name. Produced and directed by Stan Winston and Brian Gilbert from Stan Winston Prods. and Jason Lust and Rick Jacobs from Circle of Confusion, the flick will follow the game's plot.

Set in a maximum-security prison Abbott State Penitentiary, convicted murderer Torque must fight through hordes of demons and horrid memories to escape prison and his past.

In MTV's first step to advertise the movie, the company and the game's publisher Midway have released the original title for the PC as a download. Once installed, the distribution is supported by advertising videos shown before the game begins.

Interested horror fans looking for a free PC game can download The Suffering from Fileshack [http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/12984/The+Suffering+Free+Game].

i suspect the game is crap though
Maybe it means the movie is crap. Either way, clever promotion. I'd like to see more of it in the future.

Because I'm cheap.

I enjoyed the game. It's got some good action horror stuff and fcuked up creature designs. Plot and acting are about what you expect from video games.

What I really enjoyed were the extras on the PS2 version. It came with "making of" stuff: A documentary about the "most likely to be a haunted prison" Eastern State Penitentiary; a segment about how they created the post-industrial soundscapes of the place; etc.

I was hoping that every game would have those features one day. Now it's only on collector's edition discs which is a shame considering what a movie DVD release will include without an extra $10.

I would download but I am down to my last pair of clean underwear after playing Condemned 2 and both STALKERs again and I cannot afford the risk.
