The term "butthurt" seems wrong. Research seems to confirm.

Awww, darn it. I had this nice long post explaining all my reasoning about the term. But was lost like many posts I've made from a simple keyboard error and the like causing me to press the back button accidentally. I should really click the copy button more often. Forgive me if this OP is sub-par, I don't feel like going to the same effort twice in a row.

Ugh. Anyway. People on the internet seem to come up with the most gross and offensive terms for everything imaginable. This term seems much the same.

Since people waited until too late to question whether the term "derpy" is offensive, I figure challenging the unwritten rule of questioning quite possibly very offensive internet memes should be done more often. As such seem to be intentionally offensive bait tactics of troll cultures to begin with. I can see why nobody took issue with derpy or other possibly offensive memes before. But I'm not very good at conforming to internet etiquette that deems such things unchallengeable.

From what I've heard, the term "butthurt" is making fun of rape victims. If that's true, that's quite disgusting. I want to hear your explanation about the term.

I can understand having negative terms for people who get visibly angry on the internet over things nobody should be angry about, such as someone else going on an angry rant over someone liking a video game they don't. The term not only seems like a bad way of doing so, it's come to be an incredibly misused term, mostly used by trolls.

This OP lacks a lot of well thought out things I wanted to say on the matter as a preface, but they all got lost to an accidental back button. I don't feel up to it just yet. I'm sure I'll get a chance to as the thread goes on. So sorry if the thread seems sloppily thrown out there.

Also, "in before" I get "trolled", possibly ostracized, and generally thrown to the sharks to mentioning an internet meme might be offensive that was probably intended to be as to disrupt and ostracize civil discourse. Hey, this is the internet after all. The internet does things to people... even nice people.

Well I never really use the term so I don't really have a concrete definition but browsing urban dictionary plenty of definitions: ( http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Butt-Hurt ) reference it as taking a joke like taking a kick to the pants, that's why most pictures use the butt part literally. I'm not really sure where you got making fun of rape victims as I have never seen it used in that context or heard the two things even mentioned together for that matter. I could understand where you are getting it from but it seems unlikely. I'd be happy to withdraw this if you can provide a link to your statement though.

Well that's much better. I'd feel a lot more uncomfortable if the term was basically a big nasty rape joke. I believe I read that term from KnowYourMeme, but I'm not absolutely certain.

Calling someone "butthurt" or "buttmad" or "buttraging" seems inappropriate, even if someone is getting mad and throwing a temper tantrum on the internet over something entirely pointless and inconsequential. At least it's not a rape joke. I think.

Well there isn't much wrong about it if you're using it with absolutely no knowledge of its origins, whatever they may be. Save for the part where you are consciously using a more antagonistic and condescensing version of melodramatic.

I'm sorry but what the fuck? A rape joke? Of all the ways you could interpret it, why would you interpret it like that?

I always just assumed it meant that they are getting excessively angry at something because they are projecting their rage from elsewhere. For example, if someone has a headache they're more likely to cranky. It's just that 'you're only getting angry because your butt hurts' sounds funnier than 'you're only getting angry because you have a headache'.

I've never heard it in the context of a rape joke, more of a way of saying someone has "a stick up their butt" and they're being stuffy and mad about the given situation, though given the usage of "rape" in gaming slang it could have that meaning. Any got a pop culture etymologist in their pocket?

Honestly, I will start responding to things like that with "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

But in general, I do dislike the use of vulgar words "just for emphasis", but on the other hand, they're being used enough for the impact to become somewhat...diluted. I'm not sure whether that's a good or a bad thing, considering there is this annoying thing we call "reality" out there that works differently than we may be used to...

Sorry, what word do I not know what it means? Because I may have typed misclearly, but I'm pretty sure I understand how "rape" is used in a gaming context and how it can be related to butts that hurt. I'm doubtful personally, but I don't completely reject the idea.

Oh, I think you misunderstood. I meant in context, "if I happen to run across a kid using that word in a game".

I always assumed it meant that you "got your ass kicked" and now your "butt hurts". It makes a lot more sense than that gigantic leap.

"Butthurt" actually originates as a paraphrase to the action of receiving pain from getting anal sex. To put into context, its like a "You wanted to try it out, so don't get mad if it hurts" type of thing, much like how "rape" is used to describe how someone, for instance, killed someone in a video game in a manner that the other player didn't expect to happen nor could stop it from happening. It is an accurate paraphrase that some don't like because it uses a word that may offend them without them knowing the correct context of said word(s). And yes, people who use the phrase can and most likely will use it out of context, anyways, so you might as well try to educate them on it in a sophisticated manner.

Of all the theories I've seen put forth for the word "butthurt", "rape joke" is the most creative. The previous winner was the guy who was absolutely certain it was a homosexual slur, since, you know, only gay guys have anal sex and can be "butthurt" about it. :-/

The ways I've heard it used are in line with the "stick up your butt/hurts" or "got your butt kicked/hurts" meanings. It isn't a word I use myself, though, so I'm not certain.. but the quote about not attributing malice when stupidity will suffice comes to mind here.

How about we just let the internet stay the way it is. PC is all well and fine some places, but I don't want it to be on the internet. It's the last place I have to be as foulmouthed as I want to be.

Rape never made sense to me in context. "Butthurt" is used dismissively, and rape is never used to brush someone off.

I always thought it referred to anal-retentiveness (automatic clenching of the buttocks and sphincter when something marginally unpleasant happens), as people who are anal-retentive tend to be high-strung and easily offended, although I like the "kick in the pants" explanation as well.

I don't personally like the term, especially since it is a term that was brought to light only a few years ago by angry and disturbed tweens.

I feel that it is a term that is completely disrespectful to whomever it is directed to and it stands as the epitome of ignorance and immaturity.

Of all the things on all the internet you chose to be offended by, you picked something as ridiculous as butthurt.

Pretty much this. I was always under the impression that the term was referencing someone being incredibly anal about something and getting offended by it.

That said, I do have a question for the OP: Why the fuck do you care? Furthermore, why is it any of your business? The people you're rallying against are not advocating rape, even if you do take it as a rape joke. If it offends you, don't listen to/read it. There's no reason to get butthurt (hurr hurr, c wut i did thur?) about someone using language you find inappropriate. This is one of the core ideas of the moral guardians that I just don't understand. You are willingly exposing yourself to the material in question. If it's so offensive, why do you not simply choose not to?

I guess the point I'm beating around is that bitching about someone's choice is language is both futile and foolish. It accomplishes nothing except making you out to be a killjoy, and you're only exposed to it because you choose to be. My stance would be different if you were complaining about your friends/co-workers/other RL associates using such language, or if they were actually advocating rape or whatever other meaning you ascribe, but since neither of those are true, it's kinda silly.
