But.. Now I'm confused. How are you supposed to complete badges if you can only gain a certain number of cards on your own? If I trade away my CK2 cards to get the CK2 cards I don't have, I'm no closer to getting a badge. o.o

Why, buy them on the community market, of course (or trade away cards from other games, but then you'd have to buy THOSE on the community market if you wanted that badge too)! Or wait for them "booster packs" random drops, but those both drop rarely and the chance is skewed in favor of higher steam levels. This is by design, of course.

Hey, I'm not complaining. I sold the cards I got from Faerie Solitare - a game I acquired for free - and made a few dollars out of it. Anything which lets me make a profit from playing games is okay with me!

Very true but it still feels a bit manipulative. Maybe I'll just sell my cards aswell.

Maybe there just aren't that many folks on The Escapist who want to trade or have cards? Give them time. They'll crack sooner or later.

I think there is an unofficial trading card wikia which has some if not all of the artwork.

Also, I'll take the time to brag - just got my level 5 Magicka badge today

And ugh, that just I have there is awfully outdated. I'll probably update it, though seeing how there isn't much activity, I don't know how much it'll help.
