okay I was just on here recently talking about DARPA'S work with Boston Dynamics on "Big Dog" which is a 5 foot tall quadrupedal vehicle meant to aid soldiers in combat.

seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1czBcnX1Ww&feature=BF&playnext=1&list=QL&index=1

well I just Found out that DARPA just gave Boston Dynamics a payload of money to make it into

"HUGE DOG" sketched and specified here :

This is looking really awesome! instead of metalgear I'm now more reminded of the "snow-walkers" from Star Wars

Oh that thing, the thing that looks like a deformed strider and sounds like a colony of angry bees.

I'm just joking, it is cool and it would be terrifying as all hell to see an army of these things on the battlefield. Also it would be kinda awesome to see soldiers riding these things, it's probably not a sound strategy, but it'd be really really cool to watch.

I was actually irrationally terrified when I saw it walking up the hill.

Then the guy kicked it and I blurted out "Hunter!"

850 pound robot? Huh. That's not going to be -too- big. Also, seeing as it's going to be a supply hauler, I strongly doubt it's going to replace any piece of equipment any time soon.

Still, the thought of seeing a soldier use one of those as a machine gun mount is entertaining.

Thats pretty impressive, makes you wonder what will be around in 10-20 years.
Or what's around now. I strongly believe that any military tech that is revealed to the public is at least five years old, possibly ten. To me, it makes no sense to reveal true cutting edge technology to the world, where it can be studied and potentially copied.

This was two years ago, wonder what they are up to now? And this is only what the public can see.

If by "tank", you mean "packmule", yes, it's a walking "tank"...

Also, that has to be the worst picture for the scale of the thing! It looks about 6 stories high! XD The MOLLE packs on the side are a bit of a giveaway though, my guess is ~1.5m tall. Not small, but by no means "huge".

No need to keep secrets when companies from our own country sell arms to our enemies. http://www.sofexjordan.com/

That is amazing, especially the balance and course-correction, but it could never be used for stealth in that form. It sounds like a chainsaw powered by bees.

Interesting looking.

Although I certainly hope this isn't the finished product and reaaaally hope they don't expect it to be taken along to covert missions or stealth missions.
That thing sounds like it's powered by several overclocked electric toothbrushes and a broken down chainsaw.

That's pretty impressive, but I can't help thinking that an RPG will put paid to all that technology unless they can cover it with what will have to be bulky armour. It doesnt seem the stealthiest machine ever made, either.

Off topic: I initially read the thread title as "The wanking talk..."

Extremely Impressive, and Extremely terrifying. I can only imagine enemy soldier's faces when they see about 100+ of these guys walking towards them.
