The Wonderful 101 Gets Multiplayer, Release Date

The Wonderful 101 will be hitting American shores on September 13th, 2013.

This morning during Nintendo's E3 edition of its Direct live stream, company president Satoru Iwata took some time to talk up Platinum Games' The Wonderful 101. The superhero themed action game will put players in the shoes of Wonder Red and his super-powered allies who must contend with alien forces out to conquer the Earth. Nintendo revealed several new details for the game in its Direct stream, including cooperative multiplayer and a North American release date.

The bulk of Nintendo's presentation focused on how the Wii U Game Pad's unique features would play into the title's gameplay. In battle players will control an entire team of superheroes with access to Unite Morph abilities that allow them to combine together to transform into weapons and perform special attacks. "Unite Morph powers will be activated by drawing the specific symbol corresponding with the transformation on the Wii U Game Pad screen," said Iwata. "A bigger symbol on the screen means more heroes will unite and the Unite Morph will be more powerful." Players will be able to buy new Unite abilities in an in-game shop using points earned during gameplay.

While these details were nice, many will likely take interest in The Wonderful 101's newly unveiled cooperative multiplayer. Looking none-too-dissimilar from the single-player game, Iwata confirmed that up to five players would be able to partake in the game's co-op action. "Each player will lead his or her own group of heroes into battle together," said Iwata. The brief footage didn't reveal much in the way of game modes, but Iwata promised that more updates were on the way. The game itself will debut on American shores on September 15th, 2013.

Okay, this game sold me on the over dramatized power rangers/ super sentei posses. Games like these you can tell the developers love to make the game.

I love how this game is essentially Viewtiful Joe, mixed with Pikmin, with a dash of Gurren Lagann :D

Most hyped game for me :D

Why isn't this game riding the game media hype train?

It's a fucking RTS-beat em up-shooter mashup on consoles. That alone looks to be probably the wackiest and most original game idea any developer has shown in a while. Command your troops, then transform them into a pair of giant fists or a giant fuck off sword, and beat the crap out of robot aliens with them. Why are gaming journalists not foaming at the mouth to cover this, when a glorified 80s skin-swap of Far Cry 3 got them all so frothy?

From the new footage, it looks like they've really got the touchscreen controls down now. Rather than using the touchscreen to select different forms, the units actually appear RTS-style on the screen and you morph them by drawing directly over them. That looks like a very forward thinking way to go about this sort of game design, and it seems to play to the strengths of the gamepad.

Seriously though, I really really hope this game does well. It looks like a phenomenal game, and it deserves to be a killer app for the console.
My guess would be because it is on the Wii U and still has that stigma of not taking fun games seriously. I will be getting this game asap and will enjoy the hell out of it. I only hope that more people will give this game a chance because I would love to see more unique and fun games.

I have no idea what the hell was going on in that trailer, but I love super-heroes, so I'll keep an eye out for this one. The concept of 101 heroes uniting sounds fun.
I hope they all get their own character profiles. I love character profiles.

I was gonna say, "Did I just see Pikmin with superheroes?"

I'll certainly be curious to see what Platinum can with something like this.

This might have gone on my "wait for the bargain bin" list if I wasn't quite sure the controls will be awful.
