[HEADING=2]The World that Was[/HEADING]A Story-Driven Post Apocolyptic RP
Character Application Thread
GM - BakaSmurf
Co-GM - Timotei
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alrighty fella's, here's the run down, this is the application thread for the next chapter of this here RP here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.189121-The-World-that-Was-A-Post-Apocolyptic-RP-Chapter-3-Main-Thread-STARTED?page=1

All the information you'll need is in the link provided, but if you don't want to read through all that, here's the run down;

A bunch of survivors from a nuclear holocaust in Britain found pamphlets telling them to go to a hospital for food and safety, they went, they were attacked by mutants, %80 of the people were killed, the survivors got weapons and ammo from a downed military VTOL so they could survive for the next month which they would spend healing after the battle.

It has been a month since then, the survivors have used most of their ammo, and the raider attacks just kept coming, the survivors have moved on in a small caravan heading for the near-mythical 'Eden' to the north, as advertised on the radio a surivior had repaired in his spare time.

Now, it is time for you to come into the story, a fellow wastelander, join us, in our search for a new home to call our own!

Backstory-
The year is 2019, it has been six years since the day the world burned, six years since the 17th of June- 2012, the date when one of the single most horrible and world changing events in the history of the earth, and a new chapter in human history, came into motion. Day Zero.

No one knows exactly how, or why, it happened. The UN's defense network was nearing its completion. On one of the first test runs it simultaneously launched nuclear warheads at all major cities, and even thinly populated areas all over the globe. It might have been terrorists. It might have been a bug in the system, or even the will of a higher being. That doesn't matter. What does matter is that the world we knew is gone. Less than 4% of Earth's original population remains unharmed, the others have died in the blasts, from radiation or starvation, or turned into mutants, a deformed and feral form of something that was once human. The mutations have made them stronger and faster than average humans, but they are reverted to primal instincts and lack intelligence. They are found in former population centers where they, in small packs, hunt anything they can find. What ever "pure" humans are left live as hunter/collectors, except for in a few occasions where people are attempting farming. Those places are far away on the countryside, however, because humans can't generally stay in one place for a long time before attracting mutants and/or other dangerous wild life. Humans are usually traveling alone or in small or average sized groups, trying to avoid mutants, and just surviving.

As the humans died, nature adapted and prevailed. It didn't take long until the ruins of the cities were over-grown, the forces of nature corroding the old buildings and ruins. For some reason nature compensated for all the millennia humanity had held it back, now rushing its progress. The climate quickly grew warmer on most parts of the globe, jungle or pre-jungle is now the most common vegetation type.

There is a little "old" technology left, although it usually isn't in a very good condition. Humans have been known to fight and kill each others for pieces of such equipment, and a lone wanderer is as likely to get killed by people trying to steal his stuff as by mutants. That is, if said robbers think you are carrying something valuable. Guns and rifles are fairly common (especially guns using common calibres, nothing too high-tech), as are improvised crossbows and bows, and various close combat weapons.

Radiation is an issue, survivors must stay clear of ground zero's from nuclear bombs, and also avoid water that might be irradiated or unclean. Otherwise their natural protection against radiation should do the trick. There are no radiation meds, but table salt will help against small radiation levels, if no pure Potassium Iodide (wikipedia it) is available.

Setting-
This RP will take place on the British mainland, starting in, but is not limited to; the former London area.
Radios had long been discarded as junk by many people, due to no transmissions, but recent rumors tells of radio transmissions speaking of a safe haven somewhere in the North.

The current chapter has a caravan of survivors heading for this safe haven, having just finished with a major battle fighting alongside a mercenary company in an overgrown airport, this is where you come in, how exactly, is up to you.

Bio before and after Day Zero:

I will be handling the applications myself, as my former Co-GM is no longer able to participate. Be sure to note, if you can't string together a comprehensible sentence while using proper grammar, or are not willing to learn to, you will NOT be accepted, period. We'd like to keep posts readable, after all.

Also, I forgot to mention that the original story comes from the Hairminator, not me, so if you have any praisin' to be doing be sure to be praisin' him.

Also, THIS IS NOT HALO IN THE JUNGLE, if you have a gun, you will have very limited ammo for said gun, and will have to make every shot count, also, YOU ARE NOT SUPERMAN, so don't try to make your character out to be one.

Mary Sues will not be tolerated either. Or god modding, try it and you're out.

-A hooded poncho made from stiched together materials of various shades of green & brown including linen & cotton for makeshift camouflage

---------------------------------
Personality:
Joseph is a man of few words, rarely speaking unless absolutely necessary, which, in this world, is rarely ever an issue. Apart from being rather anti-social, Joseph is a very logical person, rarely allowing his emotions to influence his decisions, and is ocassionally opportunistic.

Apart from his permenant female companion, Natalie, a brunette Scotswoman whom he befriended less than a year ago, Joseph prefers to be alone -a side effect of having lost his entire family mere days after Day Zero- although he does work well with others.

After having lived alone in the green wastes for nearly 4 years, Joseph as become rather capable of defending himself, proving a capable opponant in a fight, be it with firearms or blades, but being of mearly 'average' strength, he would be easily beaten in hand-to-hand combat.
---------------------------------
Bio before and after Day Zero:
Joseph was born and Raised in Canada until he turned the age of 9, when his family moved to a small suburban town in Britain where he lived until Day Zero. After the nuclear blasts Joseph's family fled the immediate area in a desperate attempt to escape the radioactive fallout (Joseph was visiting with friends on a distant town at the time), but to no avail, as they had all absorbed lethal amounts of radiation, succumbing to their massive radiation poisoning in a crowded hospital three days later.

Joseph learned of his family's fate when he saw their bodies amongst the dead during a news broadcast.

Joseph has since forgotten the location of his British hometown, and just as well, as it is more than likely flooded with radiation from the nearby nuclear blast site that absolutely devastated the nearby farming community, attempting to go there would likely result in death via acute radiation poisoning.

Joseph was once an absolutely morally good person, never hesitating to help others in need, but years of being betrayed and tricked in this hellish wasteland has turned him into a very sour and distrustful man, he will rarely help anyone unless doing so benefits him directly in some way. Although Joseph has not lost all sense of morality, as he will help others if their surivival obviously depends on his intervention. But only when his intervention will determine whether they live or not.

Joseph was last seen in former Oxford with Natalie, scavenging abandoned buildings for anything that could be used or traded for food or gear...

Personality: Strong willed, courageous, sharp-minded, intelligent, tormented by loss of friends, has a tendency to take risks, can be fun and outgoing in less stressful times.

A natural born leader who thinks only in terms of logic, not emotion. In basic she was highly regarded for her abilities as a leader and strategist. Her only weakness was the thought of the loss of her comrades. Where as the thought of losing acquaintances give her a constant, uncomfortable feeling, seeing death happen in front of her can cause her to mentally break down. Ami was known by her friends as one to take risks and endeavor for great things, often leading to desirable outcomes. Despite her hard, combat-grizzled nature, she can be quite friendly and outgoing. Though her beautiful, exceedingly emotionless face hardly ever changes, beneath her skin lies a volatile mix of emotions.

Bio before and after Day Zero: A member of U.S. based PMC known as Primrose. Was in the U.K. prior to Zero Day on contract for a wealthy corporate executive.

Born in Oahu, Hawaii to Mitsune and Kazuma Matsumoto. Living in a three-story mansion nestled in a small, private cove along the island's northern coast near Waimea, Ami became fond of both the ocean and the physical activities it presented, such as swimming, surfing, scuba diving, and beach sports. Being very active in her early years, Ami developed a taste for adventure, constantly looking for places to climb and jump off of. Her parents were overwhelmed by her zeal, and were in constant fear of her safety.

Achieving above average grade in predominantly English-speaking schools, Ami's parents enrolled her in the newly established Kojiyama Academy, an almost exclusively Japanese private high school. Through her 4 years in Kojiyama school Ami achieved and sustained above average marks while almost constantly changing sports and clubs, only ever settling in the school's Anime Club. While being acknowledged as both popular and dazzlingly beautiful among her fellow students (especially among the male student), she had a disappointing social life and only made friends with a select few, never once having someone she considered a boyfriend. Despite the abundant coaxing from her school counselors that she follow her father's footsteps and become a lawyer, she opted instead for military service.

After graduation Ami enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Graduating at the top of her class, she left basic with advanced medals in both rifle and pistol marksmanship. She was slated for Combat Journalism and spent the next 4 years embedding herself in units both overseas and at home. Her work and dedication earned her the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. She was honorably discharged in January of 2012 without ever having achieved her goal of seeing combat. Immediately after, Ami joined the U.S. based private military corporation Primrose, where she signed on as a field operative.

Ami spent the next year travelling around he world, protecting diplomats and documents, to waging proxy wars against local insurgencies. Her first assignment was to aid the recently set up Iraqi government in dealing with the rising insurgent threat. There she engaged in many firefights and became a well respected member among the deployed volunteers, even those in other PMCs

She continued to take contract after contract in her thirst for more adventure. Her last contract brought her to the U.K to act as a body guard with several others for a vastly unpopular corporate head.
Convoy was heading into the city of London when the bombs dropped. The convoy turned around and headed to the nearest functioning airport to escort their VIP back to the European mainland. Among the 48 taking the contract, 25 were left behind with the promise to be picked up later. Two weeks after securing, patrolling, and holding down the airports western terminal, it became abundantly clear that rescue was not coming. And so the 25 members accumulated supplies and headed for the nearest settlement in search of others. After linking up with remnants of the 12th Royal Marines, her and her colleagues were integrated into military search and rescue operations.

Ami and company scoured city after city for the next few years, first by car, then on foot in search of survivors and supplies. Those they encountered had often come down with a radiation related sickness, those that didn't were often deemed too dangerous to keep with the group, or were too injured to move. As time passed on members died out from attacks and other radiation related causes. Three years after the bombings, only Ami and her fellow survivor Martin Best survived.

For the next two years Ami and Martin moved and scavenged for a living. Sometimes making due on one or two cans of fruit or soup. They braved weather, attacks, and disease together, never thinking for a second of leaving the other behind. As time progressed the two became the best of friends, followed by a romantic relationship between them, eventually becoming lovers.

One day while scavenging the outskirts of the city of Redding, Martin and Ami were ambushed by a band of pillagers. The ambush resulted in the attackers' death, but left Martin severely wounded and bleeding profusely. Ill equipped for handling severe wounds and out of gauze wrap, Ami tried as hard as she could to stop Martin's bleeding leg. That night, Martin slipped into a deep sleep and never woke up. Being the logical person she decided it best to bury him and move on.

Since then Ami has moving from location to location, scavenging for supplies and living off of what she could find, bearing with her the wills and memories of long lost friends.

"To survive, is to endure, adapt, and prosper. This, most certainly, mankind has not. Oh yes we may have endured, we may have adapted, but most certainly, we have not prospered. It may be impossible for a generation of people who had grown up with the world playing out on a monitor to thrive in this new world which we have been thrust into. The next generation however, if there ever is one, may hold a slightly better chance at survival. Or maybe mankind is destined to go the way of the many species which it has wiped from the face of the Earth. Maybe we deserve it. Maybe this is nature's way of signaling that even the mightiest of natural dynasties must fall at one point or another.

*white noise, fumbling*

If anyone is listening to this message, I, Ami Inoue Matsumoto, have passed on from this plane of existence and moved on to a far better place. And if indeed I have passed on and this message is being played back by someone other than my family, I ask of you one favor. If you survive to see a new world evolve from this wasteland, please try to find a woman named Natsuki Mizuno Lin. If you do, please deliver this device to her. She would most appreciate it."

He also possesses a strong sense of duty and honor. He has an intense fear of needles and spiders, but usually can control it to a certain extent.

Biography:

Nicolas was born in Hastings on March 10th 1985. He was the first child of Rex and Lynne Drexler; Nicolas would eventually have five siblings in total, three sisters and two brothers. He was especially close to his second sister Hannah, who was born with an extreme heart murmur that fluctuated wildly when she was a young child. Nicolas kept a close eye on her to make sure that she stayed healthy. He was however very protective of his siblings in general. This protectiveness carried over to when he was in school, by the time he was a senior in secondary school, Nicolas had been suspended over six times for picking fights with bullies who had harassed his siblings. While Nicolas had been academically above average, he decided to pursue a career in the military; he enlisted in the British army when he graduated from secondary school. Nicolas had always had a love fro his country and wanted to be in a profession where he could defend it and its people from danger.

Nicolas served in the main Royal British army for ten years, rising to the rank of lieutenant. After his tenth year, Nicolas requested a transfer to Special Air Service. After passing basic fitness exams, Nicolas began the long grueling task of S.A.S training, the physical training was intense, especially the Fan Dance (a twenty four kilometer Yomp with everyone carrying a fully loaded backpack over hilly terrain). Yet despite the harshness of the training, Nicolas managed to hang on. Eventually, after five months of exhausting exercises, Nicolas was transferred to St. Mawgan for the final part of his training, the Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract portion. The day he and several others were to be deposited into the forest, he got a call from his sister Hannah in London, his family were taking a trip to visit the city. His sister told him that everyone was having fun and how much she and everyone else missed him. She mentioned being excited to visit Buckingham Palace before he had to hang up. On his survival trip however, he snuck his wallet which had a photo of his family in it.
Nicolas was droped in early to mark an LZ for his group. Given a map, a knife, a couple MREs and a compass. After marking the location, Nicolas waited for a day, howeven no one came. Concered and having a feeling that something was wrong, Nicolas used his map and compass to navigate himself to a motorway. Nicolas eventually found a motorway that was littered with abandoned cars, but had no people. Walking down the road, he found a jackknifed military truck and trailer of onto the side loaded with supplies, but no sighns of the soldiers. Nicolas found a clipboard on the dashbord that had a short message

"Hereford, Leeds, Glasgow,Warwick,Coventry, St Mawgan and London are confirmed to have been hit. We also have reports that Cardiff, Belfest and Abberdeen may have been hit as well. Presence of radiation confirmed also, full MOPP authorized."

Reading the message, Nicolas saw a small set of corrdinants written down. Using his map, he placed it fourty miles north on London. After loading up two backpacks with all the supplies he could grab (MREs, Space Gas Mask Filters, Ammunition, A few First Aid kits) and suiting up in a MOPP suit, Nicholas began his journey to the corrdinants.

After waling for a week, he finally located the position indicated on the corrdinantes, it was a small camp walled off with recently sawed trees. Once inside the camp, Nicolas found that it was manned mostly by British soldiers and their families. Over all there were about one hundred people in the camp.
As Nicholas intigrated himself into the camp, he befriended an old man Named Westler King., who was suprisingly fit for his age of sixty five. King and Nicolas bonded, both ahd been outsiders who were welcomed into the camp, so they shared the comradery of being the unknows. Throught King, Nicolas found out about the nuclear strikes on the cities of both the U.K and the world. Nicolas was devestated when he found out that one of the missiles had detonated right above Buckingham, he still remembered his conversation with his sister, about how excited she had been about visiting the palace. At first he wanted to charge off the the London metropolitan area to serch for his family, but King warned him against it, saying the area had been hit with multiple strikes and was heavily irradiated. This revelation nearly drove Nicholas to commit suicide, the revoltation that his family was probably dead haunted his very dreams for a long time.

Nicholas continued to help his adoptive community in any way he could, he primarily helped out on the salvaging missions, his MOPP suit allowed him to get into areas that were heavily damaged. However as time passed on, the camps numbers fell, the odd mutant attack, raider strikes and disease had killed a large portion of the camp. By the time 2019 came around, only twenty five of the original one hundred were left. One night, while Nicholas slept, a massive explosion woke him up. He saw pieces of the wooden palisaide on fire and a large hole in one of the walls, with raiders pouring through. Nicholas, along with the other camp inhabitants lead by King fought back, even as raider arrows and the occasional bullet brought the defenders down one by one. After what seemed like eternity, the battle was over, with the attackers repulsed. As Nicholas looked around though, he saw that his friends had fallen, some were motionless, others still moved, with letathal wounds penetrating their bodies.

Nicholas tried to use what supplies the med kits had to stabilize the survivors, but to no avail, one by one their injuries claimed their lives. Finally, only two people were left alive in the camp: Nicholas and King. King was dying thoguht, an arrow he had taken through his leg has severed an artery and the wound had become infected. As King lay dying, he told Nicholas about his life, growing up in Scotland on a small farm, how he enlisted at a yuoung age just like Nicholas and how his happiest moment had been when he was accepted into the Special Air Serive. He retold his tales of fighting in the Trobles and the Falkland War. He had Nicholas bring him his small knapsack, as he weakly opened it, he showed Nicholas his prize possesions: an old Colt .45 from when he was in the servie, his Tan berret and a Victoria cross, which he had earned during the Falkland War when he saved five soldiers who were pinned down. He told Nicholas to bury him with his Colt and his Cross, but told Nicholas to take the Berret.

At first Nicholas protested, saying he had never fully graduated and that King should be buried his all three of his items, King just chuckled and said with last breath: "Nicholas, you helped keep us alive for six years in a world that's gone to hell, I think that qualifies you for a damned hat!"

After King died, Nicholas buried the bodies of his friends and comerades. As he lowered King into his grave, he gently pinned King's old victoria cross on the old mans shirt and cradled in his crossed arms was his old Colt.

With the dead buried, Nicholas realized that he could not hold the camp by himself. He sadly loaded what supplies he could onto a bycicle cart and backpack. As he road away from the camp, Nicholas took one last sorrowful look back at his home for six years, doned his MOPP hood and lit the plaside on fire. He knew that the inhabitants would rather have seen the camp and its supplies destroyed rather than in the hands of oppertunistic raiders.

With his home gone, Nicholas rides north, having vaugly heard King mention radio broadcasts coming from that direction.

Personality:
Sydney is a very reserved man rarely letting anyone into his mind concerning his personal issues. He was clinically depressed before the bombings, but has recovered to some degree ever since the bombings due to a new goal. He is quick witted in a situation and tries to make people laugh so he feels that he won't be missed by someone when and if he were to die, and to deal with his fear of being lonely.

His previous lifestyle as a cunning business man have made him emotionally void, violent, and effecient during "business hours," whenever the moment became tense.

Back Story:
Sydney since birth was a business man at heart growing up in New York. He was always getting his work done on time at school and thinking of ways to change the game. He lived a normal lifestyle graduating high school with high grades, but lack of motivation. At college he earned a business degree from Harvard opening the door to his eventual corporate lifestyle.

Sydney became depressed over the last couple of years dealing with pending Ponzi Scheme trial, and dealing with the guilt of shutting down several orphanages during hostile business takeovers along with receiving constant harassment from civilians in America. The only thing keeping him from ending it all was the support and love from high school sweetheart, now wife.

He flew out to Europe the day of the bombing, the plane crashed on the beaches of Britain, there was only one other survivor during the crash, the plane's pilot. He took the revolver he had packed in his suitcase and embarked on a journey with the pilot, eventually the pilot died during their first encounter with the mutants and other denizens of this new world, but took the pilots Glock before departing. Sydney pondered suicide being unable to cope with a the new world, but was saved by a phone call from his wife indicating she survived the bombing, they talked for hours until the battery in his phone died and couldn't find his charger amongst the planes wreckage. His new goal is now to live long enough to make it back to America and be with his wife and start over.

He has now been using the pilot's crashed plane as his hideout for the duration of his arrival. When using the pilots radio one day he came across the message of a so called "Safe Haven". Sydney now finds himself making his way to this "Safe Haven" hoping they'll have enough technology to get him back home to the arms of his beloved.

Remember: Strong characters make strong stories. I will not accept a character if I do not feel that they are anything but novel material. Your character is expected to have some backstory, the depth of which is up to you. And make sure your posts and characters are grounded in the realm of realism.

I'm announcing my interest now but it likely won't be until tomorrow that I can post a character sheet because it's 6:30am (I got up to watch the rugby) so I'm in no state to think up a decent character at the moment, and I'm in London the rest of the day.

I read through some of the other chapter's posts and was pretty impressed with the writing abilities so I'm all in. As I said, expect a sheet tomorrow..I'll probably just edit this post.

Also, I'm slightly intimidated by your aggression in the other thread: "Post or I will let this DIE!" I fully understand where you're coming from but.... Damn, you scary dawg!

Well there isn't a whole lot one can do to prevent an RP from dying when the most dedicated participants can't be bothered to so much as type out so much as a simple goddamned 'affermative' post, claiming to actually hold some control over the fate of the RP was just my attempt at scaring everybody back into action, as when it comes down to it the fate of an RP rests in the hands of not the GM, but the regular RP'ers.

Anyways, remember that the more thought you put into your character, the higher the chance it'll get accepted! (I'm not quite as strict as the former Co-GM, so don't feel pressured to type out a masterpiece, I'm just asking for a workable character), looking forward to your post.

Haha, yes the onus is on the RP'ers, and I fully understand your passion to keep your creation alive!

Trust me, I've spent hours on character sheets before. It all depends on if you can be bothered to read the inevitably long Bio I'll produce lol. *shrugs* It's what I do; I love a good character and - despite this sounding a little arrogant - I'm good at creating them.

I look forward to writing a character for this RP.

Dude, have you not seen the previous chapters? Well thought-out characters with rediculously huge bios are what this RP thrives on, if you can make a kick-ass character sheet you're pretty muh guarenteed a spot in the RP.

Also, don't be shy to make new posts in this particular thread often, as bumps can only work in favour of the recruitment campaign.

Haha, yes I did notice some of the long bios. I came across a GM the other day though that didn't like "long-winded" bios and put a 2 paragraph limit on them. Oh well.

It'll be fun when I get around to it tomorrow. Right now...my eyes hurt, and I have a day in London to contend with my weariness...Doing much today?

Okay now, we don't want to go getting too spammy, just go ahead and rest your eyes and be sure to check in tomorrow.

Holy shit guys. This is probably the most dedication to an RP I have seen. I admire your stubborness, and at the same time feel flattered that you would carry on with my old RP. Been about a year and a half now.

I'll see about submitting a character.

One year, two years, ten years, it doesn't matter. People have put far too much effort into this RP for it to just go out with a pitiful whimper, no matter how many times it must be resuscitated, no matter how many times it must be reborn anew, I will see it through to the end, regardless of how long it takes.

Don't start on your character sheet yet, as I've already said, Timotei and I are in serious talks about rebooting the RP, and any characters tailored for the RP as it was before it fell into a coma may be incompatible with the new setting.

And your character in particular had better be fucking glorious if you want to stand any chance of getting back in, 'cause you haven't earned yourself any points for abandoning the RP as many times as you have before it was officially dead, me and my Co-Gm don't take that kind of thing lightly.

Tim and I will post more information when it is available.

To quote Hair up there, holy shit, you guys are insanely dedicated. I'm not sure if I should be in awe or be afraid, but I do know that you guys at least deserve to get this up and running again. I probably won't be posting a sheet, but consider this a free bump, and hope you guys keep this going for a while longer. Shine on you crazy diamonds.
