The X-Files is Back for 6 Episode Mini-Season

We're Back in Business! Sort of...

Good news, everyone! The X-Files is returning to a screen near you! Not only has Chris Carter, creator of the famed series, signed back on for a new season but so have stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny. There's nothing quite like when a team gets back together to bring a much-anticipated television phenomenon back to air.

According to Carter, "the good news is that the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories." This sounds to me like we could be in store for a monster-of-the-week format with this new season, which I believe would be a very successful way to embrace one of the key achievements of the early X-Files episodes.

The not-so-good news? There's only six episodes planned, but six incredible episodes definitely trumps no episodes at all. This revival has been in the works since January of this year so it's nice to see some action finally happening. Production is slated for this summer, but with no premiere date currently scheduled, all we know for sure is that The X-Files will air on its home network, Fox, when all is said and done. Now, if we could just get another season of Firefly...

What are your theories on the six monsters for the new season? Is there anyone else from the cast you'd want to see in the new season?

Good news? I think not! The movies stink when it come to try to revive the franchise so I am not so optimistic that it is still with the time. Still I can lived that it is a one off only.

I am super excited. I hope this also means that when they release this last season on DVD/Blu-ray, we'll finally get Blu-ray versions of all the other seasons with it.

I also hope they get Vince Gilligan back to help write it, and they go back to shooting in Vancouver, and (hopefully) on 35mm film again.

I enjoyed X-Files back in the day, but it was never a "must watch" for me. I wonder how successful a miniseries will be in finding an audience... the last movie certainly didn't seem to catch fire.

Well, Gillian Anderson is already heavily involved with HANNIBAL... so... just saying :p

I am not holding out any hopes for this though, the beginning was amazing, but around Agent Doggett or whatever his name was I stopped watching.

Why did they make the second movie "a monster of week" and not a myth arch story I'll never know, hell the aliens were suppose to invade in 2012! Why didn't they make the movie about that?

Cautiously optimistic about this one. I am mostly concerned that the entire thing will be about the aliens and increasingly retarded plotline associated with them. All I ever really liked was the monster of the week episodes.

I kind of like the fact that it's gonna be 6 episodes only. Makes me optimistic about them having good, well-paced, solid episodes planned beforehand and delivering some quality (hopefully in monster of the week format with interesting mysteries).

Something as overt as alien invasion seems like it'd be the thing the franchise would have to end on, short of a reboot. I guess they were hoping do more of it

I'm not surprised its only 6 episodes, Gillian Anderson is much in demand on UK TV and the west end stage. She is pretty much fully booked

Well this made my day. I always prefered the monster of the week episodes over the myth arc episodes.

lets hope it will be promising. 6 episodes could be a good choice and direction to take the series back instead of extending it to 20 and several seasons.

Why would you cite Polygon as an intermediate when they aren't the original source for this news? Giving the brevity of your post, it's hard to imagine they had anything useful to add.

More on topic, I think this reboot is a mistake. All good series must come to an end, and that end was ages ago for X-files. Duchovny and Anderson have both found success in other shows since. Californication is well known, but in case you hadn't noticed I'd also recommend The Fall (both available on Netflix).

This is being done by FOX. Keeping true to their name they will cancel it after 3 episodes and air them in backwards order, then blame low viewership for its failure. Thats what they do with half of their TV shows anyway.

But six shit episodes would be worse than either, and that seems by far the most likely outcome.
