Thief: Basso's Gamble Teaser Foreshadows The City's Savior

In the first Thief: Stories From The City trailer, Basso explains that the city's savior may be lurking in the shadows.

Basso sure has come a long way since the original Thief trilogy. No longer a boxman, he's now apparently at the top of the criminal underworld food chain, calling the shots while underlings do the real work. Yet despite his newly acquired power, he's in the same boat as everyone else: The City, his home, is dying, trapped between the ravages of the Gloom and the oppression of the Watch.

But he hasn't yet given up hope, because he knows a guy - a guy who might just have what it takes to save The City. A guy who can steal back its life - because he can steal anything! You know who he's talking about: Garrett! Savior of The City! Man of the people! Hero to the downtrodden! Something like that, anyway.

Thief comes out in February 2014 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Playstation 4 and PC.

To be fair, there was a LOT of Thief in Dishonored. I'm not a fan of the "gloom" thing; hope it's treated in a different way than the plague in dishonored

So ... what happened to Basso's wife? And his sister? Or is that not part of "Thief's DNA"?

I know they are trying to rip off Dishonored, but this is really starting to look tryhard.
I am starting to get confused by this as well.
And as it has already been pointed out, Dishonored was already a "rip off" of Thief. The guys in the Thief-Dev-Team just waited too damn long to make another game. The last one was what? Ten years ago?

It's like incest or something.

Seriously it just looks bad, hell it even sounds bad. Since when has Basso been some sort of master mind criminal? He is not setting up Garret to "save" the city? WTF. Also why does Garret looks like he wants to be Altair in the last clip.

This is just so bad, they are trying so hard to appeal to a wider audience and in the end are going to end up appealing to none of them.

I bet you anything the final product will have forced combat in the form of boss fights.

I don't think that the original Thief dev team has much to do with this one. It's just the IP being reanimated.

Saving the city from tyranny or from the plague really strikes me as something that Garrett wouldn't give a damn about; if they're changing that part of him they're changing a large part of his characterization that made him stand out from other video game protagonists.

I will say that the art style in the trailer seemed to be an interesting extension of the original's art, although it's far too bright. Everything else about Thi4f... I can't really say I'm enthused, despite my love for the first two games.

Still pretty much interested.

As someone who has a very limited experience playing prior Thief games, I'm surprised that the inclusion of an actual goal would bother some people. I'd rather stumble on some sort of overarching objective à la "Save the World" than spend the whole game rationalizing that I'm playing a materialistic git who steals things for the lulz.

Oh, excuse me. He does it for the "challenge". I'm sorry if that seems conventional or pedestrian, but I like the idea of my protagonists having morally defensible goals. Even in the games that allow you to do fairly horrible things, I try and find some redeeming factor to the person I'm playing as. If they'd stuck to "I steal things 'cause it's fun and it gives my skills a workout!", I don't think I would've been able to maintain my interest.

Then again, that's just me. My Douchebaggery Filter is fairly sensitive, whereas I can imagine and understand that others might have preferred something that sticks closer to the Master Thief ethos.

This is one of the big complaints of the Thief detractors. Garrett was a very well-defined character as videogames go, and he's nobody's saviour. Now, I don't think the new Thief actually intends to directly set him up as such, but just promoting the idea like this goes against the grain. Garrett was forced into involvement against the Trickster in Dark Project, and he was fighting for his life and his freedom when he went up against Sheriff Truart in Metal Age. (I don't really recall what happened in T3.) "Garrett as hero" just doesn't fit with the Thief legacy in any way at all.

Which is fine, I suppose, if that's what Eidos wants to do, but I don't (and probably never will) understand why they recycled Garrett instead of going with a whole new character.

I think the thing that annoys me the most is that if they had decided to continue the storyline of Thief III and have the protagonist be Garrett?s protégé, then they could have taken the game in this new direction and I doubt many people would have gotten nearly as upset. Work Garrett into a couple missions, give him a proper send off, then do what you want with the license.

Sure, it still wouldn?t be the Thief we knew but it would pass the torch onto a new generation instead of stomping all over it.

Garrett is a rogue, a misanthrope, and an anti-social greedy bastard. He's a thief because he has the skill, and he's become a master of his own craft. Other things, such as love, companionship, duty, honor...they all come second to him.

The big part about this franchise is that he's always getting dragged into larger conflicts, and through the strife we see glimmers of a character who isn't as he first appeared to be. He has morals, and a code, and does care about others...but he is, in essence, still a rogue and a scoundrel. It is a fascinating duality he pulls off with dry, brooding charm.

He isn't a savior, and doesn't want to be. But the moment someone tries to screw him over, he does what needs to be done.

These developers must understand this.

They must also stop making goofy trailers. The first was haunting. The second was interesting. The third was a tad too dramatic. This one is...clumsy.

Personally I enjoyed Dishonored and thought that their approach to the stealth game was a good one: You could play it as a somewhat challenging stealth game, if you wanted to, but you didn't have to. In today's market that might be a sensible approach to things. If Thief turns out that way, it would be fine by me.

Also this kind of early trailer usually doesn't give much hints to the story. Just because this guy says Garret might save the city from the plague, doesn't mean he actually (or purposefully) does it.
