Thief Introduces The Queen of the Beggars

The Queen of the Beggars has seen it all - but now she sees something new.

The new Thief: Stories From the City trailer gets points for at least "feeling" like Thief, which I know is a very subjective and ill-defined term. But the stylized, sepia-toned look at the City and its denizens echoes the cutscenes for which the first two Thief games are famed; it's a vibe, which isn't any better than a feeling, but this is what we've got to work with.

At the same time, those inclined to look at it with more of a jaundiced eye - and for the record, I'm doing my best to stay open-minded - could be excused for seeing yet more evidence of Dishonored DNA. The Queen of the Beggars could easily pass for Granny Rags and her rumored ability to see through the eyes of rats probably has a familiar ring to it, too.

So, some good, some iffy, but probably the most promising thing about the game that I've seen so far. Optimism might be a bit premature, but it's never too soon to hope. Thief comes out on February 25 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC.

As a fan of Thief (as in, I have NO pink nostalgia glasses for it, at all), I can see where the accusations of being "way too similar to Dishonored" are coming from, but also Dishonored was kinda like Thief in the first place ;)

Okay, weak argument, but seriously, I don't care either way, copy or not (wich I highly doubt), it looks like it's going to be a pretty solid game (or at the very least, better than Deadly Shadows) and it certainly looks like Eidos Montreal definitely understands how a "Thief" game should be and feel like, so I'm pretty confident they know what they're doing.

Dishonored copies Thief (poorly), then "Thief" copies Dishonored. So, basically it's the video game equivalent to inbreeding.

Seriously, everything I see about this game, I see something promising and something worrying.
For starters, where the hell are the Keepers? I liked those guys. They fascinated the hell out of me (at least until Deadly Shadows oversimplified them, but I just kinda pretend Deadly Shadows didn't happen). It seems like this Queen of Beggars is being made the replacement of them, because she talks about carefully manipulating those who wouldn't otherwise give a shit into doing good for the city. It seems like a waste of potential to me. And the chess metaphor is too blatant to be the right tone. It gets the obvious qualities, but misses the subtleties.

All in all, it might make a solid game, but it's not striking me as Thief. Just its own thing with a Thief costume. And if that's the case, I'd rather it be its own game and not hamstring itself by trying to find that magical sweet-spot of effective revision without betraying the spirit of the original which, I'll be quick to remind everyone, has never been successfully done.

But noooooooooooo, it has to be a sequel to something popular, otherwise it might not sell.

The Keepers fell in Deadly Shadows since the glyph magic doesn't work any more.

I personally thought that this Queen of Beggars was the devs trying to replace the Pagans. I'm still waiting for them. And the Hammerites.

But remember, this is a reboot, not a sequel. So none of the events of Thief 1, 2 and Deadly Shadows happened according to this game. So Keepers could still be about. Unless this reboot removes Keepers, Pagans, Hammerites, and whatnot, and replaces them with it's own lineup.

Wait, if that is true, how is this a reboot?

See, this is a "reboot" so it takes place in an entirely different continuity from the original Thief games.

You know ... the more I hear about the new Thief, the more I think I'm gonna wait for the price drop after release. And a steam sale. Maybe.

Before TOO many Granny Rags comparisons get made, the Eidos devs have already proven that the similarities are a coincidence on the Thief forums.

The cathedral at 1:00 looks like it is an abandoned Hammerite cathedral :D There is definitely a hammer on the window.
