Thief Trailer Says Stealing and Saving the City are Kind of The Same Thing

How and why aren't exactly clear, though.

A nice, long trailer for the upcoming Thief reboot, not to take, but to (theoretically) explain what players will do when step back into Garrett's shoes. If you're new to the franchise, is a primer explaining Thief's general gameplay loop: Break into a building, steal stuff, avoid getting caught. Of course, it's not exactly that simple. Every mission features multiple routes and opportunities for players to handle situations their own way. Some players might prefer to systematically dispatch every guard they come across like a "predator," while other will literally avoid everyone and everything that might complicate the heist to get in and out like a "ghost."

For players who already know what playing Thief is all about, the trailer also provides a shallow overview of what the game's story holds. Despite his not-so-charitable motivations, the trailer refers to Garrett as "a reluctant hero" for a sick, impoverished city controlled by an evil baron. Throw in allusions to a sinister supernatural presence and this could very well be a new plot for another, more recent first-person infiltration series. (Dishonored) Then again, it's fair to say that Dishonored derived just as much from the original Thief games, so it's an even trade, right?

Thief sneaks onto PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC February 25.

So my thoughts in order.

Plague city? eh look I get some people liked dishonored but dishonored drew from the original thief, this is like thiefception.

Female narrator, okay that is fine but I wonder if they will keep it for the game, a game traditionally narrated by Garret.

A ruthless baron? eh okay but Barons are like the lowest of the low when it comes to nobility, higher than a knight but basically lower than everyone else.

Okay really don't like the garret character design, the whole all black with a cowl and hood thing is a little cliche, I get a cloak and hood traditionally a cloak is used to break up the shape of an individual. But all black is kinda a bad idea if you're trying to hide.

Reluctant hero? eh okay that is fine I guess.

So does this mean the same team who made Deus Ex HR are working on this or does this mean that it is just the same studio?

Okay female apprentice that is nice I'm glad they kept that but apparently she dies, hopefully she isn't a "love interest".

ah seriously garret has amnesia? come on guys why does like 70% of triple A game protagonists have to lose their memory.

"in the world of thief nothing is off limits" so does this mean no more contextual based jumping and rope arrows?

Dropping a heavy crate is not quiet or stealthy

The game seems well animated at least, and seeing garrets arms more gives a more of a sense of body awareness that was kinda lacking in the other games. Does this mean you can look down as see your feet?

Burning a guy alive while he screams.. not quiet.

Good, they kept the old stay in the shadow while it moves aspect.

Not really thrilled about the holding the hands weird while sneaking though. It just looks tiring.

I didn't see an xp bonus pop up when you shot that guy that is nice.

I see lots of arrow types that is nice.

dropping boards on a guy, not quiet.

weapons typically are tools.

The entire game with out killing anyone? So that means no shitty boss battles like Deus Ex HR?

I dig the blackjack animations.

Can we move bodies? they have not mentioned it

wait wait, explore the city streets? does this mean a hub like approach like Deus EX HR? if so I really like that.

Now you use gold to buy upgrades and skills? good instead of xp moving to a pure money system is nice because a better thief will have more money, where as a stupid killer will have less also it encourages avoiding combat and exploration.

NOOOO contextual rope arrow.

bullet time in my thief?

Focus ability? oh no, please don't be like the batman games where you just keep that on the whole time.

Looking at actual building schematics is neat.

I hope that the heist not going according to plan isn't the game railroading you into failing a heist or getting caught.

Seeing lots of this focus ability, getting worried.

Terminator hand in my thief?

that is neat keeping stuff on display in your hideout, dunno how much it makes sense as far as garret being a thief to make money and thus selling his loot but still it is neat.

Garret lives in a clock tower? getting sleep must be hard.

zombies? eh if used sparing they could be good.

Keep your cowl up garret you look terrible with out it.

"become garret become the master thief" at least they didn't say become a master thief. Garret has always been and will be "the" master thief.

Over all this is the best trailer I've seen for the game yet, and I'm cautiously optimistic.

"Yes, stealing and saving the city are the same thing. Now stop being such selfish pricks and let me save the city all over the rich district."

OT: Never played a Thief game, and I'm kinda torn if I should give this one a try or try and find the old ones first.

Thats pretty much my response too. I'm convinced they'll have at least one chased/hunted through the streets bit, hopefully it'll be limited to a tutorial or something. I am interested by the zombies/whatever those were, I had thought they were doing away with the supernatural stuff. Maybe we'll get lucky and get something as memorable as the Shalebridge Cradle.

You can get the whole series on GOG for less than $20, if you've the cash and the time I wholeheartedly recommend going for it.

@ 0:53 Was that a hammerite banner hanging in the background? Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

I sincerely hope they tie the apprentice back to the girl from the end of Deadly Shadows. Would be a nice nod to the fans.

And with all the different ways to plan a heist, does this mean I can FINALLY jump whenever I want? Or am I still stuck at the designated jumping zones?

I know it's been said to death but the whole barons, plague city, and industrial time period all scream all Dishonored. Also, they had the ghost, opportunist, and predator system lifted right out of Splinter Cell Blacklist. And the focus mode looks an awful lot like Detective Vision from the Arkham series. I happened to really enjoy all of those games, so if Thief puts all of this into a working and decently lengthy package then I'm interested. The more stealth games the better I say.

Can't people just steal because they want money? Why does there always have to be some random noble intention? Even GTA V had to throw in the 7 billionth corrupt cop you've killed in the GTA series just so you have someone who is worse than you so you're just an anti-hero instead of a villain. AGAIN. At least trevor was there to deal meth and be a crazy redneck.

That's always been the case for Garret. His thievery is solely a personal motivation, but due to his affiliations with a faction called The Keepers, he is always drawn into some grander plot. It's his skills that sees him hired to steal something particular (relics, artifacts, documents etc), not his kleptomania. The various other valuables he "collects" along the way aren't part of his job description.

I really hope they don't do a Robin Hood here. Garret is a straight up Thief... steal from the rich, pocket it for yourself. The "people" are never a concern for him.

If by "reluctant hero" they mean that Garret is fucked if he doesn't do the right thing, then that is what Garret has been from Thief 1 to Thief 3. While one can argue stagnation, it's much better then completely shitting on his character by turning him into a Dark Knight counterpart.

I've only played the first game and about a third (?) of the second, but what this trailer depicts doesn't seem all that different from the originals. Garret might be a bit more capable of a killer than originally, though.

I think I see it too, now that you mentioned it. Also, the book stolen a couple of times in the trailer (4:41 and 4:55) bears the mechanist's gear.

This looks like a game I'd enjoy :D
This is basically how I played both Splinter Cell and Deus Ex, just trying to sneak my way past, didn't always work though -.-

Love at the ending when the narrator goes: ...and become... The Master Chief!
xD
