Thieving games

So when I was looking through my game library, games I had had lots of fun with, but then my eyes hit the Thief series. Those were some of the best games I've played! You got to sneak around, do some planning, steal the kings gems and make a daring escape and whatnot. I dusted of my copy of The Sting, a more tactical thieving game, but barrels of fun nonetheless. And that's it, I couldn't find any other games that directly have stealing stuff as a core gameplay mechanic.
Although I guess Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale could count. Capitalism, ho!

Can you escapist mention and maybe recommend any similiar games? Placing pots and baskets on people's head and stealing their stuff is getting boring.

Captcha: hold your horses.

I don't know of anything remotely like Thief (aside from Deus Ex), but this site covers pretty much everything in the realm of sneakery: http://sneakybastards.net/category/stealthreview/

Splinter Cell is a pretty good stealth game. Though the Objective isn't the same. Same with Tenchu: Stealth Assassin. There is a game called "Stolen" that isn't very good but is about a thief.

Thanks for the suggestions, but not counting Sly Cooper or Stolen (Stolen was lots of fun with it's acrobatics, and the Sly Cooper series had lots of humor to go around) were really trully games where the main aspect of the game is stealing/acquiring loot. Deus Ex was more, well, Deus Ex.
Fallout 3's stealth mechanics are, imo, pretty laughable. So not enough sneaksy sneaksy for my taste.
Hitman and AC are both fun series, and I've enjoyed the a lot, except AC:Revelations which I haven't bought yet.

in todays gaming era the pure stealth games are very rare but you have the option of stealth in allot of games
That's true, and I guess I'm being overly picky. I just wish there would be more thief-y games, other than some random flash games I've played on the web.

The genre you're asking about doesn't really exist outside of a handful of games. It's the nichest of the niche.

AT LEAST get Thief 2X and the Dark Mod if you haven't gotten into Thief modding yet. TTLG is your friend. http://www.ttlg.com/

TDK is worth the entry price (Doom 3).

Have you played some of the Thief 2 fan missions and campaigns ?
I have not, and I haven't ever heard of those. Please elaborate?
I'm no expert, but I've heard some good things about them. Why don't you check it out for yourself ?

Many thanks for the link, found a game called Stealth Bastard which seems interesting and I like the art style.

Its a shame there aren't more stealth games on the market, because they are one of my favourite genres. It is pretty much composed of Thief, Hitman, Splinter Cell, Assassins Creed (to an extent), and Deus Ex, as well as a couple of indie titles.

You should definitely check out the fan missions for Thief 2, there are a few gems in there, and they really add to the replayability.

I am really looking forward to Dishonoured, really, as I think that looks amazing. I just hope it comes out soon.

As for games specifically about thieving, rather than stealth? I can't really think of anything other than Thief, tbh. A few shooters around have stealth sections (GR, CoD, Metro 2033), but as for thieving. I think we might have to wait for Thief 4.

The HD collection is out, you have no excuse to pass it up.
But yeah, Sly Cooper is what comes to my mind when I think games about thievery.

Mirror's edge fits the bill, right?

Other than that I can not mention any game that hasn't been mentioned before, Bethesda games, Assassin's creed etc.

Captcha: Sticky wicket. Try stealing that.
Mirror's Edge is about free-running,3D platforming.
The elder Scrolls are about the fantasy world you're let loose in.Yes it has stealth, but it's never been decent.
AssCreed does have a stealth option, but why use it when combat can be degraded into button mashing very easily, unless you're like me and despise the combat system which just wastes your time and prefer avoiding fights. And yeah, the stealth is also unsatisfying, because missions are blatantly designed to engage fights,Ubi really does think that all its consumers are braindead drooling morons.
OP is asking for thieving games, which are entirely stealth and applying stealth tactics.

Recently I found out, thanks to Hitman: Contracts that stealth can be game designer's little helper in aiding the player. The player experiences the illusion of freedom, but while their planning their next move they immediately throw freedom out the window. That's helpful because the player does what the design requires him/her to do,which can make for a great directed experience, without sacrificing level complexity freedom and going wherever the player wants.

I own Stolen and have played through Trilby, which was really enjoyable. I'll give it a go again when I have the time, thanks for that.

I haven't played Mirror's Edge, but I'll take a look at it, if it catches my interest. Thanks for the tip.

Captcha: bangers and mash, that's how I'm gonna steal your Captcha.

Stealing or stealth? Quite a few stealth games make combat of the backstabbing variety more of a goal than snagging loot. Still, here are a few:

Tenchu series (sneaky ninja games)

Hitman series (sneaky assassin games)

Death to Spies series (Russian spy in WWII and Cold War, steal info, don't get caught)

The Elder Scrolls III-V with a stealth-based character (thief or assassin or both)

Velvet Assassin (hardcore sneaking, few gadgets or weapons, steal info and loot, don't get caught)

Metal Gear Solid series (supposed to sneak and spy, but you can get into a firefight if you're careless)

Chronicles of Riddick series (first-person stealth, some combat and a few rpg elements)

EDIT: Mirror's Edge is a first-person running game. Combat is deliberately awkward because it doesn't suit the character (or the philosophy behind parkour, for that matter). It's not exactly a stealth game, but it's awesome anyway. Thief after 5 espressos and a few Red Bulls, maybe.
