Thoughts on "The Suffering" and "The Suffering: Ties that Bind" on PS2/Xbox

I don't see the games talked about very often.

I first discovered the sequel as a demo on another PS2 Midway game (can't remember which one though)

It's a combination First Person/Third Person shooter with horror themes, though the game takes a much more action orientated approach, which kind of downplays any horror aspect. Which is fine. I honestly don't think every game that takes on horror themes HAS to be scary. Sometimes it's just a cool setting for an action game.

I remember the game fondly, particularly because it did have the liberal choice of allowing you to play the entire game in first or third person, something I wouldn't personally experience again until Oblivion.

To be honest, the shooting felt like it left a lot to be desired, but the sequel, Ties that Bind, did improve on that quite a bit I think.

I've been recently replaying the games since they've been sold on GOG (god bless this digital game retailer...), though it wasn't without a slight headache getting the game to work on a modern PC, requiring a user made patch, and even then it's not perfect. It has the stink of a console port, with the game glitching out if you run the game at above 60 FPS, and it stutters if you use anything other than the game's own Vsync, causing a lot of input lag.

I feel like it's one of those games that I liked growing up that's been forgotten, but maybe some of you feel like that's for the better. I'm just wondering how many of you played it before and what you thought of it then and now.

I always loved the sheer imagination the first game had with its monster designs and how they are based on a form of execution. The flavor for the games was very good in that way. While the second game is superior in terms of gameplay, I felt that I didn't like it as much for some reason.

The sequel is definitely an improvement gameplay wise. The first person view almost feels like a standard FPS. However, I'm literally stuck only like 20 minutes in. I'm at the apartment and it says "Press Numpad 4 to open documents" and it is REQUIRING I do so to proceed. The problem? My keyboard doesn't have a numpad. And the only keyboard option that uses "Numpad 4" resets every time I rebind it.

The Suffering was actually released as a free download for PC by the developer sometime around 2008ish and I believe that version is still up. I remember it working decently enough with windows XP, but I have no idea how it works with any later operating systems. Not sure if getting the GOG version is necessary since I think you can still get the free download of the first game.

I played a bit of it but never finished the game. Monster designs were pretty cool but it didn't control very well, which is why I didn't play it for more than a few hours. Everything somehow simultaneously felt like it had no weight and also too much weight.

I heard of it a while back, but the official download I believe had ads or something, and required a constant internet connection.

I think it had an ad that played on start up, but I don't remember it requiring an internet connection to work or if the ad was just baked in.

I played through both these games when they were originally released and yeah, they were pretty fun. Though to be honest I didn't really found them remarkable enough to replay them today, dated controls and all. Third person shooters have come a long way I think.
