Well to me it makes alot of sense to do this. They dont see a dime from the used game market. Stores like gamestop profit with out any devolepment of the game. A kid comes in sells his games from $1 to $32(max you can get at gamestop for trade in games) turning around and selling them upto $54.99. Generally making a 20 dollar profit. They have to pay employees but they generally make minumum wage but that doesent really amount to anything.

There is really only two options.
1. Gamestop cuts Gamemakers a peice of the pie on used games.
2. They do Project Ten Dollar or Equalvent.

Option 1 is never going to happen.

Option 2 will see a slow in sale of used games. Once they is a slight drop off Gamestop will lower price of used games in question because demand is low and they have overstock. They will see stores makeing a slightly less money and freak out again prompting more sales and lower used game prices.

I dont see how the conusmer will be effected. If you buy new nothing changes. If you buy used once the games start being traded in the price will drop faster than with out project ten dollar.
How about the Mass Effect 2 thing, brand new copies come with exclusive content that can be aquired from DLC, second hand purchasers can buy the added content from the publisher for a price when they have the money.

Also some of my favourite games were bought second hand, years after losing the originals including Quake 3 Arena, Red Faction 1 & 2 and Oddworld: Abes' Oddysee.

Wait, people play UFC online?

Anyway, if I buy this used, I'll employ my Bad Company 2 tactic; Go to a local video store. Check cases. Take code. Sell extras online for cheaper than the developer.

Suck on that, developers. Not only will I have bought the game used and still have access to its features, but I'll be cutting into your code sales. Hell, I'll use the money I make with that to buy more used games! *Evil laugh*

So if I buy this game and use the code, if my brother wants to pay he'll have to pay $5?

Yeah, fuck you THQ.

Honestly I see a one time 5 dollar fee to play a game online is quite just.

This way, used games have to be more competitively priced, so it will save gamers even more money.

Besides, 5 bucks doesn't even buy lunch any more, whats a fiver to play online?
What if I loan the game to a friend? What if like I said my brother wants to play online? What if I have friends over, or go to a friends house and we want to play online?

This is just bogus, and only hurts the consumer.
Exactly. People get so focused on GameStop and how this hurts them and how it serves them right for paying $10 for a game they turn around and re-sell for $50 that's $60 new and blah blah blah, but it's far, far more reaching than that. There are the scenarios you mentioned, there's game rentals, there's just trading games with friends.

Just for used games, GameStop's the "easy" target because they're "evil". I've bought used games on Amazon, eBay, and Craigslist, and it hits all of those, too.

Heck, under this model, I can't even give a game away without EA or THQ (and soon Ubisoft [http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/109/1090754p1.html]) wanting to make money off of it.

"Get used to it" may have been a pun, but we need to not just sit back and let this happen without making ourselves heard. I don't know about you, but I don't have an unlimited gaming budget, and being nickled and dimed to death would put a really quick end to my favorite hobby.

will this still be the rule 5 years down the line?
example
its 2015 and your a little kid who goes to the used game store. not knowing fully that the game you are buying is 5 years old you buy it take it home expect to play it and then it tells you you need to pay for it again. you grow insatiable with your 12 year oldness and kill everyone in your house with a butcher knife.

is this what thq wants? homicidal 12yearolds?

...Make your game so that you want to play it again and again and again and again - and never get around to selling it on....
Go ahead and program that, and I will buy your game. Go ahead...we're waiting....

No matter how fun your game is, people will sell it. Some people are into the Play and forget philosophy. They dont want a "relationship" with a game, they just want a one-night sex-fueled extravaganza with their games. Metaphors aside, people will sell games no matter how good you make them.

i buy games i want to keep games i will play again i rent games that ill only play for a week
i personaly never sell games anymore because to me a collection thats huge is alot better than a small collection of recent game an its definataly more valuable

but when i did i never sold games that were either one very replayable or it was in my book a 5 out of 5 or 4 out of 5 game
also im sure you may have noticed that you see way less of great games being sold used and alot of bullshit games

Yes, $5 isn't really much, because of course it could never go up, or be expanded to cover more parts of the game experience. Sure, I feel perfect content that I should not try to maximize the amount my dollar can buy to the increase the profit margins of corporations. It's only natural.

Say, little froggies, does this water feel warmer to you?

Calling a "tax" a "fee" doesn't change its nature, only its name.

My concern with the prevailing trend in the industry towards "Interactive Cinema", is that however immersive and appealing these 'games' may be in the short-term they simply do not represent solid value for money. Especially when you can whip through Alan Wake in a weekend. What is to stop you trading it in once you have experienced all it has to offer? Worse still, what is to stop you from just Renting it?

Publishers need to stop funding Developers who are really just frustrated film directors. I would accept worse graphics for better gameplay.

I was on board with the incentives to buy new, but not at the removal of a major portion of the game for used buyers. Like someone mentioned upthread, its punishing the used buyer, not rewarding the new buyer.

And the 3 - 4 dollars you save buying used is never worth it anyways.
3 to 4 dollars?! What about the golden oldies in the bargain bucket for 1 or 2 dollars, that were fifty dollars when they were released half a decade ago?

The developers need to make money and this is an understandable way to do it.

Remember kids, the inability of publishers to manage their money is our fault.
This. Why does the gluttony of [del]publishers[/del] developers win out over our ability to play their games?

This just makes more money for publishers. Publishers are middle-men between developers and us. They don't deserve more money. Developers do.

Is this even legal?
Yes, but it is also legal to use a crack to circumvent the protection in a legitimately bought, used game.

Still, it's annoying, but at least it isn't DRM.
I don't understand the difference.

what does a normal customer lose on it? it's just a serial key.. unless you buy second hand (which inever do anyway)
But that's the whole point. If you've never bought second hand then you're missing out on a butt load of awesome old games.

Do you want your children to grow up in a world where they're unable to play any of the awesome games that we used to play when we were their age?

Gaming historians will say of this decade, "we know nothing about the games which were developed during this era because we lost the serial keys."

Its their servers, they need to maintain them, used/traded/rental games increase the playing time per copy and don't contribute the publisher to cover server costs.

Still I expect a lawsuit when the first guy RRODs and can't play online anymore and the phone support monkey tells him to pay $5.

I'll have to watch this. I'm definitely not going to buy any future game with this feature, used or new. This is ridiculous.
