i always thought it came from 4chan where / meant divide by zero which effectively ends anything. So /thread means thread over

Really? I've only ever seen it used in a "there's no way you can top this" kind of way.

Only way I've ever seen it doe either. Never rude.

As for what it means, it's just a joke BB code, as they almost always end with [/something], with the acception of Youtube ones.

usually it's something douchebags say when they think they're clever. it isn't actually over unless somebody else quotes you and then puts "/thread," thereby verifying it.

It's a dick move.
Basically saying "Har har, I or this person I like said something which I think is hilarious and/or correct and now everyone else should stop posting because I say so" The fact that they think it's a good idea to do so in a post consisting of only one word just makes it worse.

It's one of my least favourite of all the internet spawned terminologies.
It almost pains me to say it, but I'd actually rather look at lolcats than be subjected to a bunch of douches asserting their point of view as the only correct option.
And I fucking hate lolcats.

It works like the syntax (Wait? Is it? I forget. It's the code they work the forum on.). Since [/b] means the end of the bold writing, then [/thread] means the end of the thread. It works in all sorts of ways, mostly used as a vague attempt at humour. Like if I were to put [/explanation] at the end of this post...
