I always welcome new souls-like games in the market. I want to see how different creators put their unique take on a gameplay that was established more than a decade ago. Since its promotion, I was hoping this game would scratch that itch for Bloodborne on PC. However, it's a pretty generic game, and I'd put it somewhere in the ranks of lords of fallen and surge.

You play as a Corvus, an agent who has amnesia and must uncover the secrets of who you are as well as explore the city of totally-not-vicotiran-london and how the plague has affected it, and how to contain it. And Like any souls games tend to be, every backstory and context is kept vague and has the player piece together that is happening.

The combat isn't that bad. It's more akin to that of Sekiro where a stamina bar doesn't exist, but if you want to effectively kill an enemy you gotta drain both their health and wound meter. The gears and leveling seem to be specifically designed to be better at this. And skill acquisition is pretty straight forward. This means there isn't much room to experiment with builds, because they all end up pretty similiar.

You can deflect, dodge, and jump to perform flashy moves. When you are in combat, it's like a mix-up between bloodborne and sekiro, and I think this is where I feel the game fails; It doesn't know if the player should dodge or deflect. It has such a pint-point focus on fast combat, you'll more than likely to end up dodging when deflect was a better option. I feel it's one of those game where you'll absolutely love or hate the rhythmic nature of the combat.

Bosses are creative, but just don't expect any major difficult ones. Enemy designs can be really bland.

Another thing that I don't like is the environmental designs. You won't find any cool-looking areas that inter-connect seamlessly like in souls games. This game also doesn't have the colorful world like Sekiro, nor does it have the gothic and creepy city like in Bloodborne. It's just this generic dark fantasy world that you have been dozens of times.

It's also really short. Like, you can probably beat it in 11 hours if playing lesiurely, 5-6 hours if rushed. Hence, why this review is so short.

For a $25, I guess it gives enough experience you can expect from that price point, but trust me, there are better games out there. Hell, Salt and Sanctuary is $18 on Steam and it's better than this game. I'd still say go play fromsoftware games instead, or even code vein.

It's one of those double-edged swords I think. Like I want more people to play with the FromSoft game design, but they almost always fuck it up so I kinda wish people wouldn't bother, but if they dont try and improve on this (Like with the Surge vs. Surge 2) then we wont have anybody but FromSoft doing it. So I want more devs to keep trying.....but maybe do it as small indie projects until you figure it out right.

The weird thing is that they have countless examples to look at and copy the feel of, yet they never seem willing to do it.

Honestly, had this game pushed just a bit more on the creativity, I may have liked it enough. It made me remember the experience I had with Surge's limb targeting mechanics; Cool ideas on the surface, but shallow as hell.

There's another souls-like game that seem to share a very similiar concept, called Lies of P. More on gameplay at upcoming Gamescom. I am really hoping it'll make me forget about Thymesia.

Thanks for the review, it pretty much seems like what I guessed from the trailer and the 3MR here. The kind of game I'll play if it's on Game Pass and have nothing else or something.
