Tim Schafer's Next Game is About Russian Stacking Dolls

Tim Schafer has released a trailer for his next downloadable game, Stacking, starring Charlie Blackmore, the worlds littlest Russian stacking doll.

Tim Schafer, the mind behind Tales of Monkey Island, Brutal Legend, and the recent downloadable game Costume Quest, is back with his next downloadable, Stacking.

The trailer, found here [http://www.ign.com/videos/2010/11/23/stacking-debut-trailer], shows that being the smallest stacking doll in a world entirely populated by stacking dolls isn't really a bad thing. Charlie can jump into his larger brethren, taking advantage of their unique abilities. And these being stacking dolls, the whole idea is putting many dolls inside of larger dolls, something that Charlie will need to do in order to complete the range of puzzles featured in the game.

The player will be rewarded for experimenting with the different dolls, and most puzzles can be solved in a variety of different ways. Need to circumvent a guard? Sure, you could try sneaking past him, but why not distract him with a pretty female doll instead?

What seems interesting about this concept is that it seems to combine two ideas from several other of Schafer's games. In Psychonauts, the player was able to jump into other character's heads, while in Schafer's most recent game Costume Quest, the main characters' abilities differed depending on what clothing they were wearing, and different costumes were required for completing puzzles. Drop those two concepts in a food processor, and you end up with a creamy, delicious game called Stacking.

Another interesting facet of Stacking is that it seems to set a trend for Schafer. Costume Quest was a downloadable game, and Stacking will be as well. With Schafer's reputation of making high-quality, well-written games that don't sell, perhaps his thinking is that moving to downloadable games (which are easier to make successful) will help alleviate his long-standing problem.

Hopefully the game will showcase the wit Schafer brought to games like Psychonauts and the Monkey Island series, and based on the trailer (and, let's face it, the fact that Tim Schafer is involved), the game will have a strong thread of humor.

The game is expected for release on XBLA and Playstation Network sometime in 2011.

Actually Tasha Harris was the gal behind costume quest, but yeah the game looks interesting, i hope its as stealthy as i think it is, there are plenty of funny indie puzzles out there, but no funny stealth games, i love the look of it.

oh and the trend you noticed has been announced plenty of times, during the "Amnesia Fortnights" (the time where they didn't know if brutal legend would be published) the team split up into four teams who each came up with a idea for a downloadable title, but only two of them where picked up by THQ, last i heard they are still working on finding a publisher for other two.

EDIT: turns out tim schafer doesn't have that much to do with this title either, its apparently by brutal legend?s art director, lee petty and his "awesome" team (that may include schafer) http://www.doublefine.com/news/comments/please_allow_me_to_introduce_you_to..._charlie_blackmore/.

and sadly its not stealth based beyond having to be behind people.

As the first poster mentioned, Schafer didn't come up with Costume Quest. Besides that though, Stacking looks pretty darn awesome.

I've used to be terrified of those as a kid, now they're coming for me now I'm an adult! But anyway, it seems like a very interesting concept, I may have to purchase this fine looking game.

This game doesn't appeal to me at the moment. I got "Costume Quest" (have yet to play it) but right now I don't thinking I'll be buying this one.

I think Tim's problem has been that his games always include a fatal, conceptual flaw that presents them from selling. For example with "Brutal Legend" I think the problem was that it was too much of an RTS game, and not enough of a sandbox game, which disappointed the people who bought it expecting a differant kind of game given how it was presented, and lead to it being killed by word of mouth. With Psychonauts I think his art style was just too stylized, the characters look like people constructed out of snot. I understand what he was trying to do, but I think people who looked at that decided not to purchuse it on the merits of the visuals. Had the game been done with a differant graphical style (which is not an easy thing to change) I think it would have been more successful.

I'm not sure if one can say "Monkey Island" didn't sell, it did after all get sequels and remakes. It's one of the few games, barring simplistic affairs like "Tetris" to have become a classic.

I can get past the stylized artwork for something like "Costume Quest" which appealed to the child in me for some reason, but I just can't get into the idea of playing a game as a stacking doll.

We'll see if his latest crystal of creativeness will generate interest surpassing his previous titles.

This guy should start thinking about what will be the storyline of Psychonauts 2 instead of doing something else !
God help us if someone in the industry does something original.

Tim's games have always been kind of hit and miss for me both in concept and execution, so I haven't even been interested enough to try them all, but this one sounds pretty cool.

That-is-GENIUS!

Every character has a special ability, you are the smallest doll! It's brilliant!

Looks extaordinary. This and Rock of Ages are the only games to have piqued my interest in ages. Well, Portal 2 looks kind of cool I guess.

"Jumping into people's heads" in Psychonauts was just a narrative device to get you into traditional levels rather than an actual mechanic. This sounds like the opposite.
Perhaps Scott was referring to the Clairvoyance ability.

Also, Double Fine needs to start releasing games on the PC again, damn it. This looks utterly fantastic.

Would anyone recommend Brutal legend?
i would, i had a blast with it, and by now you should be able to get a good enough deal on it that it would be worth the money even if you are not a fan of some of the story missions, the infamous "rts" battles, the world is unique and awesome, theres a kickass soundtrack, which unfortunately only plays while you are in the car, but yeah you can get it for 16 euroes over at the hut, and its well worth that.

Last I checked Schafer was not involved in "Tales of Monkey Island", he worked on the Secret of Monkey Island.
Yeah. Tim Schafer was a writer on the Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2. He has had nothing to do with any of the later games. Ron Gilbert the lead designer of the first two did have a hand in it.
