Time Is Running Out on Molyneux's Godus Kickstarter

Peter Molyneux's god game has only 3 Kickstarter days to go.

With three days left on the Kickstarter clock and still short about £80,000 ($130,000), more or less, Peter Molyneux's 22 Cans has put up a new game play video for its god game Godus. Marvel at what two weeks of coding can produce, and wonder what might happen if this thing actually got funded.

Exclusive homeworld totems and your face on Tweeted [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120529-User-Overload-Crushes-Curiosity-Servers] his enthusiasm for the project and put some of his own cash down.

Godus promises to be an interesting reimagining of the god game genre Molyneux made popular with Populous. "Godus blends the power, growth and scope of Populous," the Kickstarter description claims, "with the detailed construction and multiplayer excitement of Dungeon Keeper and the intuitive interface and technical innovation of Black & White." Whether it will or no, it has only a short time left to make bank.

That's pretty cool that they managed to get that far. But I'm still not buying. Not until I see complete workable code.

Apart from anything else I was playing a populous rip-off recently, and it's main mechanic is fairly limited. You just make a huge flat plateau every time. And it meant it was really obvious that the AI was basically set to let you win or lose everytime because the winner was always who could make the land flattest quickest. And when writing the AI you're basically just setting a rate that it did this. The spells were mostly frippery so the games all felt samey.

Now this is Peter M. so he more than anyone has the chops to fix that. But he is also Peter M. no buying until I know what he's actually made, which probably won't be what he's said he'll make

... You don't understand how Kickstarter works, do you? Or is this just a way of saying you aren't going to pay out until the project is finished? (In which case I do agree on that, but probably not the best wording)

Well a couple of days ago Peter M. said he was going to release a demo the next day... but yeah I meant to me this isn't worth kickstartering until it's finished. I've kickstartered Wasteland and Eternity, so I know how it works.

But what is a little unfair is I'll only be put into a position where I can make a reasoned decision because other people have put their money on the line. Hopefully the game will be awesome and they'll get to eyperience the happiness of supporting it as well as the add-ons and reduced price of having a faith that I didn't

I'm sorry, but... It's Populous: The Beginning. Look at it, it is! I mean, I love P:TB, but you don't really need to create a proof of concept design when five minutes of footage from a game released in 1998 will suffice. It even has the same style of fights with spirits floating up from corpses.

Yeah, that's a close one. I don't want anyone's dream project to fail, but at the same time, I think this might contribute to giving the kickstarter community a much needed "reality check".

Kicktraq projects that they will get up to £414,038 at their current rate. Not enough...

...If I had money. I would hand them what I had. Sadly I am poor and unable to do jack squat. I am making my xmas presents out of 2 card making kits, some toilet rolls and painted food decorations. I literally have no pennies to spare.

I really want this Kickstarter campaign to succeed, but I just get that feeling they aren't going to make it. That would be a serious pity, as I would be in the mood for playing another god game. I just wonder what this will mean for 22cans should the project fail.

After Peter Molyneux has disappointed time after time over the last decade, why should we believe this game will suddenly be different? Curiosity has been buggy and a relative failure on all accounts, the Fable series was weak and failed to live up to the most basic expectations set by Molyneux... I mean, I'm sorry, but I'm done. I'm not buying the hype anymore, Peter. Show me you can do something, ANYTHING of legitimate value, and I'll start believing in your vision again. For now, I'm kinda glad this is failing. Maybe it will wake him up and get him to see his current strategies just aren't working

1. Is this the first Kickstarter from a big-name developer that might not make it? I mean, up until now it's been like, "Oh, you want to make a new Shadowrun game? Well hell, you created Shadowrun, so here, have a shitload of money." and, "Oh, you're responsible for some of the best adventure games ever made and you want to make another adventure game? Help yourself to my wallet." But here we have a big name with a known track record of some cult classic games and... it might not be enough for its minimum amount.

2. I guess it looks kind of intriguing? But it also looks like there's not really a lot to do. Like, I don't expect to see everything in a two minute video, but... you watch people build houses and die. And you level a bit of land. You could do a lot of really cool things with that, but since they didn't show anything other than that, I can't really get excited about it.

3. Black and White had an intuitive interface? Don't know, never played it. But man, fuck Black and White 2. Get on the god damn wall already, archers, holy shit I hate you so much get on the wall god dammit!

Define "big name". There's been a few impressive failures. Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119478-Jungle-Adventure-Headed-to-Kickstarter-Disaster] one count?

I wish him luck, I do. When there's a final product, I may buy it. But I'm not putting my money down first. For years, Molyneux's games have been getting bigger and bigger budgets, and bigger and bigger staff loads, yet seemingly falling shorter of his ambitions with every new product. I'd like to see some evidence that he's learned how to rein things back into creating a solid game on a smaller scale, and Curiosity isn't that proof.

Yeah, I remembered Shaker after I posted that, but as cool as Anachronox was, I don't think any of those people are as big of names as Tim Schafer, Tim Caine, Peter Molyneux, etc. I mean, that's me letting my bias show a bit - someone who doesn't give a fuck about old-ass RPGs but loves the shit out of old-ass strategy games will probably know a lot more about Chris Crawford than Chris Avellone - but for most people, yeah, those are pretty obscure names. Part of that is the, "Well, what have you done lately?" factor. Tim Schafer's long done with Monkey Island and Full Throttle, but I can still name a lot of recent Double Fine projects he's worked on. It's been ages since Icewind Dale was a thing, but Josh Sawyer was project director on New Vegas just a couple years ago. A quick look at Chris Crawford's page shows an 18 year gap between Patton Strikes back and Balance of Power: 21st Century. David Crane apparently hasn't been involved with a game since 1997. I'm sure Hall and Brathwaite have kept busy, but I honestly could not say with what.

It's proof he hasn't. Molyneux is the master of the high-concept never-before-seen game that's hyped to hell and ultimately disappoints. Curiosity is the highest of concepts, the worst of the hype, and makes even the lamer Fables look like Game of the Century material. It's the pinnacle of the sort of insanity that brought the parody Molydeux into existence. It's hard to take the man seriously anymore.
