TimeSplitters Respawns Onto PC

The cult classic shooter series is finally making a comeback. And yes, there will be monkeys.

Never underestimate a dedicated fan base. After Free Radical kicked the bucket and was purchased by Crytek, it looked like there was no hope for a new entry to the much-loved TimeSplitters franchise. In spite of this, a few optimistic supporters started a petition begging for a TimeSplitters 4. And by "a few," I mean 75,000. Crytek, as the current owner of the IP, wasn't impressed enough [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118934-Crytek-There-Isnt-Enough-Interest-in-TimeSplitters-4] to justify developing a new installment, but it did the next-best thing: the company gave a team of 25 talented fans official permission to resurrect the series with a new game. This fan-directed project aims to capture the best parts of the TimeSplitters trilogy, and has been appropriately dubbed TimeSplitters Rewind.

The team was permitted to use assets from the main TimeSplitters games, but declined in favor of rebuilding everything from scratch in CryEngine 3. Using an updated engine will lend the game a more modern look, but the developers don't plan on fixing what's not broken. The 300+ playable characters, dozens of weapons, and classic maps will be as close to the original flavor as possible. "It will still feel like a TimeSplitters game," promises project manager Michael Hubicka.

Rewind focuses on the fast-paced multiplayer and skill-based Challenge Mode of the series, ditching the campaign and co-op modes in the interest of finishing the project in a reasonable amount of time. 8 to 16 players will be able to play online, over LAN, or solo, with AI-controlled bots available in any mode. All the classic game types will be present, along with a couple of new modes. The team hasn't ruled out the possibility of recreating the trilogy's campaign, but it will have to wait until they can dedicate their full attention to it.

The project is coming along slowly but surely, with a demo planned to release by December and the finished product available not long afterwards. The completed game will be 100% free, with batches of new content (including many of the playable characters) scheduled for free post-launch updates. Currently the core team is developing the game in their spare time, but if you think you can help contribute to the effort you're welcome to contact Hubicka to lend a hand and speed up the effort. It's a labor of love, after all - and thankfully, there's enough love for TimeSplitters to actually make this happen.

Praise the simian lord! We get a new Timesplitters game!

I'm so hype for this. Ever since I bought Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect on PS2, I just couldn't get enough of the series and have been eagerly waiting another entry.

Glad to see that the fans haven't been left out it the cold.

And I'm kind of glad that they're focusing on multiplayer. That was easily one of the best part of Future Perfect for me. Playing multiplayer with a friend with bots on is one of my favorite past times.

EDIT: How was I ninja'd with M. Bison? T~T

I just dont really get Timesplitters, but then i dont really play a lot of multiplayer and just tried out the single player campaign which i found ok but nothing special. If someone could link me an article or something that explains whats so wonderful about this game i would be really grateful.

Aside from that, props to Crytek for letting the fans have their fun with an IP that was going unused. If more companies took a leaf from Cryteks book and didnt sit on IP's 'just in case' the gaming would would be a more fun place.

I remember the TimeSplitters 3 campaign, and loved how they ran with the madness that comes with time-travel plot-holes and paradoxes.Going from WW2, to present, and a cyberpunk future, it's like Cloud Atlas with less philosophy and more guns. For me the fps multiplayer was the best of its generation on consoles, and the ability to create your own maps and play them online is something that still remains almost unheard of on consoles.

Very much looking forward to this fan-made release!

But campaigns were the really interesting parts... oh well, I guess you can't always get what you want, and honestly it wouldn't really be feasible for garage devs to just make a new campaign that was anywhere near that level of quality.

Actually, yes, I've tried it a couple of times, but also I've tried a few games with 4 controller support with my PC connected to my TV.

So yeah, I don't see why they shouldn't have split-screen in the first place.

With that being said, the infection mode in TS2 was the best, and the TS1 maps were pretty good too.

Hopefully they bring back the easy-to-use level creator too.

No coop modes? Double meh, this and campaign was 50% of my timesplitters experience and is how id introduce my friends who aint played it before to the game before letting them loose in multiplayer with no context.

Im cautiously excited, will see how the final result turns out.

This is an awesome bit of news, however I'm not getting my hopes up considering how much Crytek has endlessly teased the fans. So I'm sure the CEO will retire or something then hit the fangame with a C&D and whatever else they can manage.

Think positive Snot: Well I hope it comes out and I wish the fan-devs the best of luck.

Coop and Campaign are roughly the same thing for this series, anyway so if the one arrives, so does the other. And that they want to focus on the MP first is kind of understandable as that won't require tons of cut-scenes, voice-acting, ect... Just the 300 characters, a bunch of voice-acting and that's about it (well, maps, weapons and gamemodes, too... but you know what I mean)

Why do I have this horrible feeling that Crytek will use this reader's digest version of the previous games to justify a decision not to make any REAL Timesplitters games?

And why do I feel like the aiming will be the generic PC 'crosshair locked to centre' style, insteead of the classic 'crosshair moves in the direction you look' style that... you know... Timesplitters has always been loved for?

Well, this will either go amazingly well, or crash and burn terribly. I am certainly hoping for the first of those, as I love TS, but I am not going to hold my breath.

Though to me, No Split-screen and No Campaign will pretty much remove everything that I loved about TS. I know it had online multiplayer, but I never used it - and never even had the necessary network adaptor in my PS2. I really enjoyed the campaign, and the splitscreen was absolutely great for when you had friends around so... yea... they're saying it will be 'just like TS of old' (or words to that effect), but actually they're removing two-thirds of the game experience, and for that matter, the two-thirds that I would actually want to play. Also, no mention of the Mapmaker I see...

As I said, no breath holding here.

This is brilliant. First I hear they're bringing Whose Line back, now this!
I at least hope that, if they don't eventually add a campaign, they at least add a few of the more loved campaign missions like Neo-Tokyo and Siberia. If they've programmed in bots, it's probably not that hard to throw in some missions from 1 and 2.

Also, while there are no mentions of a mapmaker, remember that this is on PC. I'm sure there'll be a way to create and play custom maps without the classic mapmaker being in the game - and what with it being on PC, the mapmaking can be a lot more sophisticed and creative.

I hope that someday they add a campaign, not like the one of the third game, it was a great story but I can see how that would be hard to do with all the voice acting and writting, but one like the second game where there is barelly a story and voice acting would be great. Siberia is still one of the best levels of the series.

Also TS:FP wrapped up things nicelly, it would be cool if it was like a prequel with another time traveller.

But yeah, keep the multiplayer a priority here and keep the challenges since they really add up to the longevity and variety of the game.

I remember there being a bunch of coop modes in timesplitters 2, though admittedly its been a long time since ive played.

Ok maybe its a bit of an exageration to make a fuss about that, its a minor thing compared to the campaign.

Don't get me wrong though, im grateful for the return of timesplitters multi, especially if they keep the silky smooth framerate and overall smooth feeling and crisp esthetics the series had, but put yourself in my shoes...
How am i going to convince most of my current gaming crew, pc heads who have nothing but disdain for consoles and games on them (a sadly common attitude) to give a console fps a shot? Campaign makes for a nice carrot in that i can at least go "theres coop!" and then, once they see why timesplitters is so amazing, they graduate to the multiplayer :)

Oh sod it, screw my friends. Im sure therell be enough likeminded timesplitter fans to keep me company ^^

I do hope the map editor music soundtrack will make an appearance then. Timesplitters had great music and a fair amount of those awesome tunes were hidden in the map editor to use with player made levels.

No campaign no buy.
ok, first its free and second they are focusing on the mulptiplayer and challenges first as thats what the majority of fans wanted. they haven't ruled out the campaign, they are leaving out until they get the multiplayer out of the way so they can focus on the campaign afterwards as it would take a lot longer (look at black masa and theats ONLY single player).

just the 300+ character models alone is a big task.

My gripe is mostly if they make it for sell or something like it I wont touch it, I enjoyed TS for the SP stuff it was hard at times and funny.

Even a F2P online shooter means nothing to me, you want to get my attention do a single player, you want my money make it great..

God yes! TS is the only game that would get me to play multiplayer again. It´s simply the best of its kind to this day for me.

Interesting, but as someone who never played any of the games i'd be way more into PC HD remakes.

What a wonderful counter-balance to the recent wave of controversy and disgust.
We'll have to wait and see how this shakes out, but it's a good sign nonetheless.

Good to see so many Time Splitters fans here. I got into it with TS2 and a friend. Then went back to TS1. Never got into TS3 though. We'll see what they do with the multiplayer...too bad about the loss of split screen, as this was easily one of the greatest things about this game.

Must not get excited until I see gameplay, Must not get excited until I see gameplay, Must not get excited until I see gameplay, Must not get excitAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!... Future Perfect, The R&C series and the J&D series were my fucking childhood... I have gotten HD remakes of 2, and now I will finally get the third. Now I must go lie down before I have an aneurism out of sheer hype.

Now this, is some exciting stuff.

A new TimeSplitters game with the appropriate FPS controls of mouse and keyboard. There could be no finer combination.

Definitely something I'm looking forward to, here's hoping the fans can stick the landing and do justice to the series they love.

Because this calls for a celebration. With Blackjack and hookers.

And the hookers too for that matter.

BECAUSE WE BE GETTIN' A NEW(ISH) TIME SPLITTERS MOTHERF*** YEAH!
