Today Is "Entertainment Software Day" In Texas

Texas Governor Rick Perry has officially proclaimed today "Entertainment Software Day" in Texas. Hint: by "entertainment software" he probably means videogames.

Guess "Videogame Day" didn't sound official enough, but we'll take this anyway. In a first for the United States, February 3, 2009 (that's today) has been officially proclaimed "Entertainment Software Day" in honor of the contributions of Texas-based videogame developers to the state's economy and culture. Governor Perry's proclamation coincides with the passing of resolutions in the Texas legislature recognizing the value of the games industry in Texas. The resolutions were spearheaded by Senator Bob Duell and Representative Dawnna Dukes, who have previously worked to secure financial incentives for game developers in Texas.

"The support of Governor Perry, Senator Duell and Representative Dukes for the entertainment software industry in Texas is an endorsement of the artistic and economic contributions our industry has made to the state," Mike Gallagher, the CEO of the Entertainment Consumers Association, said. "These lawmakers are helping grow our industry as we work to create new jobs for Texans; boost the state's economy; and help discover new ways computer and video games can improve the ways Americans live, work and play."

The Texan games industry has certainly earned a day in its name. According to the ECA, it adds $395 million to the state's economy.

So, Texans, how will you be spending your official Videogames Day? Maybe play some Doom II in honor of Texas' own Game Fuel [ ], munch on some Pringles and eat some Haagen Dasz while I play some Gears of War 2. It's doing this state some good.

Holy s***, the Austin studio scene rings in 395 million? How would I find out the numbers on North Carolina?

Crap, the Texans are catching up to us New Yorkers. They cannot win! I will now petition the governor to make every day Videogame Day in New York. If I wasn't so lazy, that is.

Damn, though. Texans are getting smart. Maybe it's time to start taking them seriously again. I know, it's been awhile. But I don't trust them.

Shit, I live in Austin, and I don't trust em either.

In other news, I took this to my boss as soon as I saw it, saying "Since we're in the gaming industry, isn't is a slap in the face to not take today off? More like a slap in Rick Perry's face. Do you wanna slap our governor in the face? I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Assaulting a state representative. You don't wanna break the law, do you? I couldn't work here anymore if I knew my boss was a criminal. I don't think anyone could. So, in conclusion, if you don't let us go home, you're breaking the law, and I won't stand for it."

Unfortunately, my boss didn't see my reasoning, and yeah, we stayed a full day. WTF is the point of Video Game Day (sounds way cooler like that) if even people in the industry can't take the day off!

I have but one song to sing:
The stars at night are deep and bright
(clap clap clap clap)
Deep in the Heart of Texas
The sage in bloom is like perfume
(clap clap clap clap)
Deep in the Heart of Texas
Reminds me of the one I love
(clap clap clap clap)
Deep in the Heart of Texas

Screw this, I can't remember the rest of it.

How... uncharacteristically progressive!
But, hey, you gotta admit: Videogames have probably become nearly as important to the economy as the film industry.

I was rather suprised when I saw a 40+ woman yesterday in my local gamestore, wanting to buy a copy of L4D. When the guy behind the counter asked if he should wrap it up as a present, she said "No, it's for myself."

But on topic, I wish we could have those kind of days over here. I can picture the huge LAN parties in the parliament.

And yet, later today, everyone will go back to blaming video games on all of our society's woes...

This is awesome. Here we have a state ackowledging the benefits of the videogame industry, and yet there is an article also in the news about you crazy Australians trying to ban MMO's. Maybe we should ship you some of our Tesas politicians.
