Today's PS3 Update Completes PSN to SEN Transformation

We will officially never use the words "PlayStation Network" ever again.

It is the end of an era ... of nomenclature. Sony made the bold decision to change what we call its downloadable content delivery system and online gaming portal. The PlayStation Network now matches the rest of Sony's properties by referring to itself as the Sony Entertainment Network. Sony announced the change last week, but with the 4.1 update to the PS3 today, the transition is complete. Your "PSN" account is now a "SEN" account. You're welcome.

Sony wants to make sure we know that the change is in name only. "Please note that this change is one in name only and will not change the PSN that you know and love. You'll still play games online, still have access to the latest downloadable games and add-ons, and still experience a wide variety of movies, sports and music across PSN," read the announcement on the PS3 blog.

I'm not sure I believe the reason Sony provided for the name change. I mean, getting the name of the service in line with its other Entertainment Networks is fine, but to me, changing the name is just a way to further distance themselves from the PSN debacle of 2010 when hackers broke into the database and stole personal information and credit card numbers from thousands of customers. Which is pretty savvy if you ask me. People forget about controversy if you call the source something else. That's why I refer to my goiter as Gertrude.

Well, whatever the reason, the name change is here to say. Sony Entertainment Network, I love you.

Oh hey, in case you were one of the 7 people who used it, version 4.1 of the system software also speeds up the PS3's internet browser.

Playstation. Network.

I did it! I am defiant! I--

Okay. I guess I just don't care what they call their network, although I also don't really see the reason for the change. Doesn't bother me, and I'll be downloading that update fairly soon.

Mostly because I still sometimes use the PS3's web browser ....

There is only one logical conclusion: They are phasing out the PlayStation brand and when they announce their next gen console it will have a entirely new name.

Sony erased the "Playstation" name from its online service. This happened for a very specific and serious reason, though I'm not sure which. Maybe their future plans don't involve the next Playstation, or a traditional game console as we know it.
Just a thought. Time will show what they really had in mind.

Really? Because where else would they go? The portable market? (laughs at Vita's sales)

I can't see this anything more than a ploy to, as the article says, distance themselves from the PSN hack.

The name PlayStation is now synonymous with a game console, along with the Xbox and the Wii/Nintendo. While I can't disagree that it could be because it's a name change in the future, I seriously doubt a name change in the works without changing their sales demographic.

From what I understand, they merged the backbone of the PSN and the SEN into one. Not sure what that'll due, but it'll probably streamline things *shrug*

It's a shame. I liked saying PSN...PSN...PSN. It had a nice ring to it.
SEN on the other hand, eh. It's forgettable.

Gah! 'PSN' rolls off the tongue much easier than 'SEN' does.

If SONY don't make Michael Essien the poster-boy of their new service somehow, they've missed a huge trick.

Well, that's not as fun. "PSN" is fluid to say. "SEN" sounds like one of the machines I use on a daily basis, the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). So, I'm forced to once conclusion--I too will continue to call it by it's old name.

For me its actually easier off the tongue, and SEN is an easier word to abuse than the PSN.

nonSENse, diSENchanting, arSENic, inSENsetive, inSENsible, unchoSEN, worSEN, etc.

My guess is that the PSN debacle will always haunt that name and google results will not show that when they use SEN so maybe that's why Sony decided to change it. Much cheaper than say appeasing customers or improving their security and services.

I downloaded it, and now the sound keeps dropping out when playing games. Not sure if the two are related, but I tested a few games and it happened with all of them. Anyone else had this?

Oh come now, it only makes SENse.

OT: So they rebranded? That's... insignificant.

As for the browser, I used to use it extensively! It was quite helpful! But then I got a laptop without a shared browsing history and it fell into disuse. Why no, I would not like to go into detail!
