Nice to see the OP recommending Welcome to the NHK- I really enjoyed that anime and it deserves more attention. Glad to see Bacanno's already been flagged up.

In case no-one has mentioned already, Canaan is an interesting anime with a colourful cast of strong female characters. I also recently watched Paprika, which a fantastically well animated film. It's a bit of a mind-fuck, because it is all about dreams and such. It sort of reminded me of Inception in some ways.

Alrigh... Without sounding like a broken record, I'm going to suggest an anime that hasn't been recommended yet:

Afro Samurai

A samurai out for revenge and he won't let anyone stand out of his way... It's bloody and Afro is voiced by SAMUEL L JACKSON, son! That, alone, should be the incentive to check it out... especially if you're going to watch Samurai Champloo in the process...

Also, as a more recent recommendation:

Michiko & Hatchin

If you love Cowboy Bebop and/or Samurai Champloo, you'll probably like this series... It's about a criminal women and an orphan girl escaping their current lives together... They search for this one dude while simultaneously trying to finding their freedom... I really do not want to go into details, but after I got done watching it, I really want to own this series alongside Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo in my complete anime collection...

Other than that, everyone else has spoken most of my anime choices...

I can't believe I forgot to mention the movie "Dagger of Kamui."

Here is a Japanese trailer:

Its directed by Rintaro, I'd recommend anything he's had a hand in

Elfen Lied - cute girls doing cute things - such as tearing people limb from limb in the most graphic ways imaginable. Watch the first two minutes. If you don't like them, it ain't for you.
Ohh, ohh, I've seen that one too.

Had some really good moments. The standout bit that stuck in my memory was...

"I've fought entire armies for the chance to apologise to you."

The whole lets-tear-all-the-clothes-off-the-prepubesent-girl routine got a bit creepy after the fourth time though.

Berserk, assuming you haven't seen it. I've said it many times, if you only watch one anime in your life time then watch Berserk. The more I think about the series, the more brilliant it becomes. The tone is dark and serious, but it's also philosophical and brilliant. It's similar to Game of Thrones in some ways, but it has a more intense character focus and the overall plot is more tightly paced.

Berserk: Probably one of the best, set in a brutal fantasy world but isn't too focused on supernatural stuff at first, until crushed dreams and hopes summon the terrors from beyond.

If you're at all interested in reading manga however, Berserk is superb. I can't even begin to describe how good it is.
I've read the comic of Berserk. Only Manga I've ever read. It was, uh... it was something. Yes, it was most certainly something.

I wouldn't say it was bad, but it did decline over time and ended up getting rather formulaic.

Kyber said:
Off topic: Did you like Attack on Titan?
It was alright.

Pacing was truly terrible at times. Didn't exactly care for the big twist around Ep5, felt an opportunity was missed there.

Premise was good. Some fun characters. The grapples make for sweet actions scenes (even though the nitpicker in me really wants to know how they dislodge and retract them between each swing).

(People are gonna attack me for putting this on here, and fuck everyone I count it as anime) RWBY by Monty Oum and Roosterteeth. Really it's girls leaning to be monster hunters, but there's a charm and...well, something I can't put my finger on that makes me a pretty damn cool anime.

Also, I recently started watching SHIKI over on Funimation. It's a story about vampires that's disturbing as fuck, but soooo good, surprisingly.

People have already mentioned Higurashi, and I'll go on to mention Umineko, the 'side-story' to Higurashi. Don't worry, no need to watching Higurashi to watch Umineko is needed. Just a warning, Umineko is bloodier than Higurashi (in my opinion)

I just had to google it to make sure, but they did make Another (a very good novel with a super good manga adaptation) into an anime. Describing the story is spoiler filled, but it is rather unsettling, but a crazy as shit story.

Damn, that's a lot of mentions. Hard to recommend something not already written.
Oh, I've got one.

Mirai Nikki. It literally has a bit of everything(good and bad).
You will probably ask yourself some questions while watching it.

On the scale of 1-10 is she 10 or 11 in crazy?
Best terrorist ever?
Is this even legal?
Will I run out of tissues before the end?

If those questions seem unimportant, forget them immediately and just watch it.

Hey, while im here maybe one of you can help me, ive been looking for a movie/short series, that used to be played at night on teletoon, around the same time as they started showing ninja scroll. One was a few episodes about a team trying to build a spaceship, was fairly high quality. the other one im looking for was on at the same time, and i believe it was a movie, all i remember was a training session where a mech had to use a revolver to shoot a target, but missed when the auto targeting was down, and they had to go onto a mission on an oil refinery/oil platform. vague i know, but if anyone could help i'd appreciate it!

If you're looking for serious minded anime, I'd recommend Madoka Magica - it's a dark deconstruction of magical girl anime, but that's not why you should watch it. It's just a really damn good show. Also, From The New World/Shin Sekai Yori, which is about a future utopian society of people with telekinetic powers.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, a dark comedy about a girl who finds her future teacher, hanging himself.

Within 10 episodes, he gets hit by a street car, gets stalked by a stalked stalker being stalked by a stalker and her underwear cleaner, gets stabbed in the gut and smashed over the head with his own gravestone, twice, by the same OCD victim, and gets raped with an electric motorcycle charger.

4 seasons to go.

And if you're into violent ecchi (which... pssh, I'm not) then either High School of The Dead (which borders on creepy zombie hentai I found in google images one late night) or School Days (which is worth watching simply to see the hilarious and terrifying ways the characters die, and it has become notorious because of it. And it's freakin' funny as hell). Ofcourse, both of them have good stories, and the animation quality is also really good. It's just wrapped in slightly distasteful clothing.

Valvrave the liberator: From the makers of Gundam, very fun mecha show to watch.
That's actually by the makers from Gundam?

I enjoyed Gundam 00 and Gundam SEED, not the greatest things but a good watch. But I quit Valvrave halfway the second episode because it seemed to go in the direction of Guilty Crown, which I can safely say I utterly and completely despise.

Namely because it seemed to be heading in the direction of inconsistent self-insert high-school boy protagonist with a plot that's only there to make the viewers feel good about themselves as opposed to actually telling a story.

Should I have kept on watching a bit more? Does it actually tell a consistent story that's not all about the main character?
Dunno man, I found the first episodes boring but was enjoying myself halfway.

I wouldn't say that the story is about the main character all the time, the last few episodes in the second season were fairly bloody and messy, in a good way.

The series still adheres to a lot of clihés, but I find it somewhat enjoyable to watch.
