So, my fellow Escapists who are lucky enough not to live in a country where this goes on go ahead and check it out on youtube to see what's the latest in child abuse from America.

For the Escapists who do know about this go ahead and post your opinion of it. I'd like it if someone could explain why people like it, or even defend it.

I get that some people just like different things, and personal opinion and all that -- so don't comment my OP about how Im a fascist, thanks -- but still this can't be healthy for those involved.

I'm of the belief that if you want to do something that doesn't hurt anyone else, go ahead, but involving such a malleable young child isn't something that I can get behind. I'm not one to support living vicariously through your offspring either way, more so at such an impressionable age.
That does raise an interesting question, though. Just how much right does a parent have to influence their children in such ways? None of this is illegal, but it certainly looks unhealthy, or at least unsettling to see such a life impressed upon such a blank slate. Parents have such tremendous power over their child's development, and it sucks to see someone with a lifestyle you don't approve of creating a copy of themselves in so many ways on such a blank slate.

If I were in one of those pageants I would be giving the Pimp Backhand to every single parent, just hearing the title of that show makes me rage.

I think it's awful. I get the whole dressing a child up to make them feel good about themselves but the parents just take it way too far. Rather than teaching them that they're beautiful they're teaching them that you have to put in huge amounts of effort and wear makeup and pretty dresses in order to look good. I can't remember if they ended up proving it true or not but one parent used botox on their child to get rid of wrinkles. WRINKLES! I am all for letting kids dress up and have fun but there has to be limits. These pageants are just a way for mothers to try to achieve their own dreams through their kids.

Im not going to go to youtube to see, but Im going to assume the OP is talking about Child Beauty Pageants. bout which Im... eh. It singles out the bitches in life, and is a good way to see what moms you dont want your child to be around. And besides, its no worse the the adult beauty pageants. the only thing bad about this is its "children" so everything seems more evil about it.

...

Personally, It hink it instills a winning ethic to a girl to be honest. If they had the boys equivilant of cage matches, I'm sure my uncle would have put me in one, and im sure he would put his daughter into a beauty pageant because it will teach you to "win, and win decisively."

so yeah. let the parents do it if they want. Tell the dads to get off their lazy asses and do something if its so bothering, cause tehy;re just as much at fault here for letting it happen.

...

and if thats not wat the video was about, sorry that I missed the entire point of the thread.

That show is ridiculous. It is one thing if a child wants to be in the pageant but most are forced into or are just plain creepy/bratty. *sigh* I hate American T.V. ....

Because drama queens like watching other washed up drama queens try to live on through their little kids by making them compete in these beauty contest. When they make the boy do it I want to just slap the shit out of some mothers.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's really hard to say that they aren't making kids sexualized when they put padded bras on them. Just seeing the commercials makes me feel like a pedophile.

This is kinda tough. People have the right to raise their kids in the way they choose as long as they provide and care for them and I'm sure the kids wanted to do it, at least at first, but at the same time its sort of sad how they are trying to live through their children to fulfill some dream they never could or push them into it because they think their kids are supposed to live up to some kind of standard that they set for them from birth.

It'll sure as hell teach those kids to rely on looks and glitter rather than personality and intelligence.

I don't like it, we have enough of this "Bratz" BS as it is.

They don't need it, they get enough fap material just judging those 'pageants' a term that should be used loosely in connection to this disgusting display of some of the lowest slime in the country. The parents and unless I'm mistaken specifically the mothers, are fucked up for pushing their kids into this shit, taking so seriously and parading their kids around in front of Pedobear and friends.

Also keep in mind that this isn't a new thing in America, it's just something that is now being put on TV because TLC, which should stand for The Litter Channel can't find any parents who have squirted out 8 or more kids in one shot and this is the next best thing.

I bet on the local level, for a particularly girly little girl, it could be a whole lot of fun to get to dress up in fun outfits and prance around on stage.

The television's obviously hunting for the most extreme examples of this activity, as it always does. I would ignore it.

Exactly what I was thinking. And all the kids who lose at the pageant will feel like they won't win at life because they're ugly (not that they are, but they'll feel that way).

I have nothing against playing dress up once in awhile, even with make-up. I did it when I was knee-high to a grasshopper, before I started hating dresses like they would make my life end.

But those pageant parents...They're living through the kids. And it's not healthy.

it,s retarded to what lengths parents go to win some stupid pageant I have nothing against beauty pageants but 8-10 is way to young.
I think the only people who like it already had a visit from Chris Hansen.

I've seen some commercials and my sister in law seems to watch that show and everything about it just seems wrong. Some of those children start modeling when they're months old. It seems like all of the kids on the show are indoctrinated and, their parents just seem like the worst kind of people. What 5 year old needs a fucking tan or, to have their teeth whitened? Some kids get plastic surgery for that shit but I think that's a different show.

At it's normal, harmless level, it's just a fun way to compete with your child, and can be a nice bonding experience for parents and their children.

At it's upper echelons, however, it is indeed parents trying to live on through their children as extensions of themselves. Happens all the time.
