The 'Princessification' of little girls is definitely one of my soap box issues. If I say anything more, I'm going to fly into a rant.
There is an episode of that old satirical UK show called Brass eye. (Guy who did Four Lions among others) Where they show parents backstage at a beauty pagent where the parents are showing off breast implants they got their 4 year old child. Everyone thinks it's adorable. That unfortunately, would not surprise me all if I saw it on the news.
The main problems here are sexualising children. They use the adult model for attraction which is revealing outfits, make up white teeth etc. Which forces you to judge the kid on a horribly inappropriate system of "beauty" Not to mention the fact it's even more messed up bringing up a child to think that the only thing it has to offer in life is how attractive it is and how it has to obey orders and follow the herd and ratify that stereotypical view some woman have for themselves that looks are everything.

I think it's sick... It's harmful for the child's psychological development in a scale much worse then most videogames. I also think it's border line pedophilia propaganda and a sick and twisted way of undermining any form of social and cultural values.
It's not just "kids having fun"... I think we all know how competitive and aggressive those pageants are so it's more of a way for frustrated mothers to relive past success (as shallow as they were) or frustrated mothers to experience what those success might've been.
This also introduces kids (specially little girls) to a world of shallowness and consumerism that is quickly turning this world into an awful place... I love how they usually brag about good wholesome christian values, though...
Sorry for this small rant but I think those pageants symbolize most of what's wrong in this society... A bit like Jersey Shore for kids...
But what do I know? I'm European so I might have a twisted view of that subject...
PS: I'm not being pseudo-PC mind you... I love tits and booze and "violent" video games just as much as anyone else... But I'm an adult who chose that for myself... I don't like that being pushed into kids killing their potential of thinking critically and rationally...
EDIT: Only now have I read the other comments so I feel I need to add something... I'm not hating on the USA. I do realize that I mentioned Jersey Shore and everything but it's not like I think "fuck the usa... they don't have any moral values! USA sucks...". In my humble opinion the USA is a great country that is unfortunate enough to have created both FOXnews and MTV. Those two channels by themselves give more media coverage to sad examples of people then probably all of the worlds media put together... Of course you (Americans) have your screw ups like these child pageants but here in Portugal we have bullfighting and I'm nor particularly proud of that either... Every country has its screw ups... So I'm not hatin' on anyone...

Pageants at a young age are a bit... overdone isn't it? It's more for the parents their ego then helpfull for the child. I, as a child back then, would have preferred to play outside then to be inside wearing a dress and Tiara. . . Then again I am a man so that might be a bit different for me.

Its okay if they just put them in little dresses and let them say "You're beautiful!" but some parents take it too far. Not to mention, how do they define beauty? Because that falls within the perviews of your conundrums of Philosophy. Teaching the only way to be seen as beautiful is too wear a crapload of make-up and stuff like that will only hurt them long term when they get older.
My mother watches the series, for some reason that I can't fathom. Then again she watches other reality tv bullshit, so I guess there's my answer right there. Personally I want to punch all of them about as much as I want to punch the two morons from 'What Not to Wear'. (Who gave those two little shits the right to THROW AWAY people's clothes just because THEY think it doesn't look good? But that's an entirely different rant.)
Ultimately....I suppose this kinda crap, while unnecessary and sometimes wrong/downright creepy, well...I suppose it helps maintain the status quo of the world. What would life be like without those wonderful snobbish, fashion-obsessed, makeup-company-stock-buying, drama queen, bitches that a few populate every high-school and thus make up part of the classic experience for everyone.
Still....America wants to put emphasis on learning, math, science, etc. for it's younger generations. A good step might be to outlaw shit like this. Or at least take the program off the air. Spreading the concept will only cause the weak-willed to try and engage in the activity.
and as for the boys' side? They already have something like this. It's called Youth Football. A boss of mine as well as some other parents I know have kids who are about 8 years old and they're playing. Hell, youth-sports in general. Only difference is everyone knows the trope about the angry, half-drunk dad at the baseball game, yelling at his son for every microscopic mistake the poor kid makes and introducing everyone under the age of 16 to various new and inappropriate words. I don't think it occurred to many of us that it was possible for Moms to be the same way with their daughters.
Still....basically want to punch anyone who does this crap. Or at least unleash the Miller High Life dude on these people.

It's sad. This is one of the same reasons that I hate that teen modeling, and even modeling in general. It gives people a reason to think that they're not attractive, or good enough, or even the slightest bit pretty.

Back to the topic at hand, I'm all for girls being in pageants if they want to be. (My daughter asked before to be in one that's held in town. Trust me, this would be the last thing I would be pushing for nor want to hear from her.) It just seems to be that the ones they show on TLC are more of the extremists who are really looking for their 15 minutes of fame or trying to gain something by having their child participate in those events.
Recently I've seen two different articles related to this (and lost the links sorry) but in one a 7 YEAR OLD GIRL went to get Botox, and another who was younger was getting breast implants. The 7 year old repeatedly kept saying that she just couldn't get wrinkles, she had to stay beautiful and the whole time I kept wondering, 'WHAT WRINKLES!'
WHY? Why do our little girls need to be put through things like that at such a young age and all for a pageant? It makes me wonder just what they are judging in the first place and maybe it's the pageant that needs to have it's qualifications reviewed/changed.
I will admit that I have a close friend who let her son do modeling and he's eight. It's something he was interested in doing and he's always been very particular about his 'looks' without any hint from her. I think that's fine, it's not something she's pushing on him for monetary gain and any money he's gotten has been deposited into savings for his future. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that there are parents out there that aren't that extreme, but unfortunately that's not newsworthy or something that would be a hit Reality Show.
