Hiya escapists.

Quick question, really. I just heard about this curios thing that I need to know more about.

So a friend of mine told me that when his family went to live in the states for a year they had to change the toilet seat (or ring or whatever) in the house where they were living.
Why?
Because it was padded. That is, it had soft cushions lining the ring on which you sit.
What the fuck?

Dear Americans, I need to know this:
Is this, like, a thing in the states?
Do people normally have padded toilet seats?
Do you, I don't know, cover your toilet seats with plush while you're at it?

I had a friend of mine whose Grandmother did that in their house. I can imagine it might have some purpose (possibly for hemorrhoids or some other health issue I can't think of), but I think it is mostly for show.

I, for the most part, aren't keen on them myself: When the summer weather comes along, you stick to it the same way you would if you sit in a car with the wrong kind of seats and you're in shorts.

But as far as I know, it's only for house use, meaning you won't find them when you go into a grocery store's bathroom or any other establishment with a bathroom.

They're really weird, and not a lot of people have them. I've only ever seen a few in use, and haven't used one like that in years.

They seemed a lot bigger in the 90's than they are now. I hardly see them anywhere anymore.

Some people actually enjoy the comfort of them, and there's nothing really wrong with it.

There's nothing really gross about it (unless you're a guy who doesn't put the seat up to pee, then it could get kinda hard to wash) it's just a different thing.

I don't have one, I've never had one. But I have used one. It feels a bit off at first, but it's not bad.

Plus they don't get as cold on winter mornings, which is kinda nice.

I'd never buy one myself, but if I moved into an apartment that had one or something I wouldn't waste money to replace it.

Padded seats frighten me.

They're out there, yes, those nasty vinyl-covered contraptions, but they are VERY uncommon, and always seem to come in those nasty 70's shades of poop-brown and shit-green.

Additionally, I've seen things for sale that cover a seat and make it look like someone glued a chunk of carpet to the seat, but those are thankfully very uncommon. Usually, I see them only on old lady's toilets, in those extra bathrooms they doll up that are essentially "display only" (Old people are weird)

My nana has one. I think it's mostly an old people thing. It's kind of annoying because it keeps the seat from staying up completely by itself.

The house I lived in back in England had wooden toilet seats, and it sucked. Back then I read a lot of books so whenever I went to take a shit I would take a book with me. Obviously, if the book was good, which it was more often than not, this would result in me trying to get up half an hour later and discovering the toilet seat had merged itself with my upper legs. I swear, all the ladies need to get one of those things, cause it takes the job of waxing your legs.

Give me ceramic toilet seats. Anything else is disgusting, uncomfortable or both.
I actually like a wooden seat if it's made right. A nice hard wood sanded baby-ass-smooth with a natural wax finish. Wood is naturally warm to the touch usually so it doesn't have that "sitting on an iceberg" feeling a cold plastic/porcelain seat does.

*heaven*

My seat's wooden.
I think it's a woodstain/laquer finish though.

I agree that they're the best of both worlds. They're not cold, and they don't have that weird, almost greasy, slippery feeling that plastic does.

Now here's an interesting one I've come across: A styrofoam toilet seat.
That might sound absolutely horrible, and I'd be inclined to agree. It is absolutely imperative that you do not piss standing up when using this kind of toilet, but for the right situations they can actually be appropriate.
In particular, I'm thinking of outhouses.
Here in Norway, temperatures can reach -30[sup]o[/sup] C if we get some winds from the east, and when you're at a place where the only toilet is an outhouse, you really learn to appreciate it.
Styrofoam seats are absolutely unrivaled in their ability to stay comfotable and warm.

I'm in the UK. I had one of those things once; it was a toilet seat made out of foam rubber or something.

Christ but it was disturbing to sit on. Give me hard wood any day.

I prefer wood or padded myself actually. The pad usually has some kind of leathery, slick surface that you can clean very easily.

Unfortunately, I still live at home and all of our seats are plastic... From my experience:

God Tier:
Wooden
Padded

Mid Tier:
Ceramic
Porcelain

Low Tier:
Plastic

Shit Tier:
Metal

Goddamn beach bathrooms usually have metal toilets. It's the worst when you get there and realize you need to go and your only option is to endure the cold aluminum against your backside or try squatting over it.

I agree with most people that it's an old person thing. I have shat in many toilets (I'm so proud) and I've barely ran into those.

This is so odd xD I can't imagine how strange it would be. I do remember seeing these toilet seat warmers on "Dragon's Den" before though.

Custom toiletz.

Also, slightly off-topic, I love these toilet seats. A little disturbing but rather cool.

I don't own any personally, but they are quite comfy.

Feels good when you need to have those long-term sits.

Again, why gross? They are made of waterproof fabrics so they are just as easily to keep clean as a hard plastic seat and arguably easier to keep clean than a traditional wooden seat.
If this is the case, I think they sound like a very good idea. Hard, cold toilet seats are rather shitty...
