Torchlight 2 Open Beta +Small review

Ok apparently I've been very much out of the loop... so while TL1 was essentially a Diablo clone with no multiplayer, TL2 is going to be a Action ISO RPG/MMORPG?

Torchlight 2 is going to essentially be Diablo 3 but playable and made by the guys who did diablo 2

Woah woah woah, lemme hijack this thread for a second. Apparently after Torchlight 2, they're going full on MMO with it co-oped with Perfect World Entertainment.

"Runic has creative control over the MMO and its Micro-Transaction Store" So it, like a lot of PWE MMOs, will be Free To Play. Awesomeness increased. Why have I not heard of this before?!?

You weren't paying attention, because that was the announced plan from the start of Torchlight.
They just decided to release single player games on the engine they are perfecting so they can keep going financially until it's all ready for MMO prime time.

I wasn't in the beta but I already preordered Torchlight 2 and I gifted my extra copy of Torchlight to a friend. I will probably save it until we have played the crap out of Diablo 3 though. Since we like to play co op games together.

Both games are/going to be decent. The pet in Torchlight is a wonderful mechanic and I love the art style.

You do realize that Diablo 2's developers made Torchlight and Torchlight 2, right?

You also forgot to add that Torchlight 2 doesn't, in addition to not having the real money auction house, require always on internet, not have true LAN, and not mod friendly.

Sure! Now that I've played it quite a bit with all classes.
Note, I haven't bought Diablo 3, only played in D3 Open Beta.

I'll update my first post shortly.

Except torchlight 2 as been in development for about 2 years, its no clone its a sequel to its own game, the fact that it seems similar is due to them both being action RPGs

And just because something is a none issue for you doesn't make it any less of an issue, and on mods... just because you couldn't manage to find many mods doesn't mean they weren't out there.

Didn't you know? If you are too young to have played D2 on release, you forget that half of the hack'n'slash games that came out since 2000 are D2 clones. Or rather, you don't know that, since you didn't play D2 back then.

I've played D3 and Torchlight. I've not played Torchlight 2.

I proffer Torchlight over D3, D3 is just seriously lacking IMO.

Seems like they're sticking with non-skilltrees which makes skilling characters a bore since there's exactly 0 planning required and that stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid ass fish system to transform your pet.

Why can't you evolve it or something? Like a pokeyman. Why can't the pet have a skiltree and according to which path you choose, it changes its appearance?
Does that just make too much sense?

At least now that retarded fishing minigame isn't forced on us as much as you can dynamite fishing holes but still... so much wasted potential.

OP, what class did you play and how far did you get through the torchlight 2 beta? Interested because you're talking about it being easy however I found that from the frozen wastes area to the end most mid sized fights have the potential to simply one shot anyone but an engineer if you fluff it and get caught by a chunk of the burst.

I agree that the death penalties are a bit limp, I really reccommend the perma-death mode if you're looking to give the game more bite.

I just couldn't get into the first torchlight, I really really wanted to (it had been years since I played a crawler) but for whatever reason I just could not get excited about playing it.

I even modded the hell out of it to give me more pets/items/difficulty/monsters but it just didn't draw me in like I had hoped. Honestly I didn't even know the story, something about monsters or something.

Which was disappointing at the time but now I have Diablo 3 which scratches my itch.

could be, I'd hate to think it was though. I'm not particularly picky about art or graphics in games.
