Torchlight 2 Suffers Windows 8 Woes

If you've been having troubles with Torchlight 2 recently, there's a Steam key available.

Travis Baldree of Runic Games thinks he knows what's to blame for some players' Torchlight 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/trailers/5617-Torchlight-2-Cinematic-Trailer] problems: Windows 8. The problem only affects some PC players, but blocks them from playing altogether, as it requires activation but does not allow the affected user to input any codes.

"Normally, when Reactivation is required, it automatically takes care of itself," says Baldree. In the rare cases where there is a problem, Runic has tools to fix it, but those tools aren't working this time.

"Our current suspicion," says Baldree, "is that something structural has changed in Windows 8 (or during the upgrade process) which fundamentally breaks the license." As the problem doesn't affect all Windows 8 users, it is proving particularly difficult to isolate.

However there is a temporary solution. Runic is offering Steam keys to all affected parties. To make a claim, shoot an email to [email protected], and be sure to include a receipt from the purchase as well as information about your OS and setup.

That is the kind of customer support I expect from games developers. Wish I had chosen TLII as my game of the year now. TellTale games, if you're reading this, take notes.

I'm sorry, but why?
I honestly can't make a connection from this to his statements, it seems like that underlines his hate for that system.
Sorry if that is a saying and I can't understand it, I'm sorry, I am not a native speaker.

OT:
Runic rules. I'm glad I chose TLII over D3

Isn't this more a problem with TL2's DRM than a problem with Win8? People seem very quick to jump onto the "Win8 are teh evilz" bandwagon and blame it for everything.

Random undocumented security changes? Who would ever get irritated at that?

It's a problem with both. A better DRM wouldn't be running into problems (and in fact most other companies' DRM don't), but Windows 8 more than likely made the change that made this issue visible.

P.S. Thanks

The issue I've had with Windows 8 is that certain games would crash when directx or any other software update the game needs to run when the game is started for the first time. The solution was to run the installers by themselves if available or to download them separately and then run it if they're not available in the games' folders.

I wonder how many people in the game company think that windows 8 is actually to blame? Zero would be my guess

Everyone with half a brain knows that the problem lies in the DRM. Not the operating system that the DRM works on
DRM can't be coded to handle random changes to the OS flawlessly
