Torchlight II Shifts A Million Copies in Three Months

Runic Games ends the year in style. And with lots of money.

While Diablo III may have dominated the dungeon-crawling, loot-hunting genre in 2012 with its record-setting sales, that hasn't stopped its estranged, half-sibling, Torchlight II from breaking a few records of its own.

According to a new year's tweet from developer, Runic Games, Torchlight II has done very well indeed:

"We had an amazing 2012, and proud to say that #Torchlight2 has sold over 1 million units! Thank you! Happy New Year's Eve everyone :)"
That's a million copies in just three months, not half-bad for a self-published, digital-only game from a tiny studio.
The success seems well deserved. Torchlight II is currently sitting pretty at a respectable 88 out of a 100 on Metacritic. [http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/torchlight-ii] Oddly, even the notoriously bipolar Metacritic userbase seems to agree; The game's user review score stands at 8.8. Our own Mike Kayatta pegged it a little higher [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9942-Torchlight-II-Review], giving it a tasty 4.5/5.

The fact Torchlight II is going for just $20 probably didn't hurt sales either. If that's still a bit too rich for your blood, it's currently on sale on Steam [http://store.steampowered.com/app/200710/] for $9.99.

I just bought it myself about half an hour ago, so make that a million +1. I never did get round to finishing Torchlight so I bought that too, these Steam sales are killing me here...

Could scarcely have happened to nicer game; well deserved. I've sunk hundreds of hours into TL2 in those few months.. had to force myself to put it down and play summat else in the backlog (FTL oh dear, another game with its hooks in me).

EDIT: Coinkidink, I swear. Just checked the link to Mike's review from the OP and the first sentence speaks of the game getting its hooks in. I'm spooked out now. Time for a lie-down.

It's great to see Torchlight II doing so well, especially when it was technically going up against the new entry in the original hack-and-slasher series, Diablo 3. I do want to eventually do a hardcore character on veteran, but I have yet to max out my starting Outlander even though I'm less than five levels away.

I do love TL2.

I've had more fun with it then I ever have with D3.

Good for them. I personally found the game impressively boring and uninstalled after a day, then again I also found diablo 3 bland and uninstalled after a week so maybe it's that grinding games are just not my fit anymore.

Way to go Torchlight II. Nice to see a great game can still make it without a huge PR budget and a carnivorous, user-despising attitude behind it.

I'm gonna be that one guy who has to bring up Path of Exile despite that it has nothing to do with the conversation.

Check it out, it does new stuff without faceplanting every week and it'll be free to everybody on release, with apparently minimal cash shop interference.

As for Torchlight 2, it's great for folks who wanted their Diablo without the unnecessary stuff bogging it down...and not really much more beyond that.

I paid sixty bucks for Diablo 3 and had to begrudgingly force myself to finish the game, twice. Haven't played it since.

I paid twenty bucks for Torchlight 2 and, am present, working on max-leveling my sixth character. Not counting my multi-player-only characters.

Hmm, you tell me: Which game provided me with more enjoyment, per dollar spent?

Good on Runic. I'm glad to see a small developer, working primarily on their own, with little to no advertising budget (or dev budget), can craft a million+ selling title.

And frankly? They deserve it. Torchlight 2 is the hack-and-slash game I've been waiting for for years. I can easily see it joining the ranks of my "favorite games ever".

I'm not really a fan of the hack and slash RPG's, but while it's great for them that they sold a million copies it's still kind of sad that Diablo III with all it's problems plus triple the price tag still sold millions more. The real world of business sucks sometimes.

The game has no depth but that doesn't matter, it's not supposed to. In the inevitable stand up comparisons between TL2 and D3, TL2 I definitely enjoyed more. Good on them, even my dad is currently playing the original Torchlight and getting him to try anything besides Heroes3 is insanely difficult.

Runic deserves all this success and I am very happy to see that they've done so well with the title. I loved the first Torchlight and the second one is basically the same thing but polished and expanded on x1000.

Just bought it today, so did a flat mate so we can play it together, sounds like they deserve this success.

I'm pretty sure those millions were pre-orders considering D3 was what we were looking forward to since Diablo 2.

Great game. Grabbed me immediately, unlike other titles in the genre which took much longer to become entertaining or engaging.

It sold millions more because its a great game. I'm really really tired of the Torchlight 2 vs D3 debates at this point because everyone is completely set in their ways and no amount of arguin can change that, but the point remains they both have good points and bad points. To a lot of people D3s good points outweighed the bad points enough to not give a toss about Torchlight 2. A lot of people couldn't get over the bad points of D3 and played Torchlight 2 instead.
