Trash Talking Seniors Compete in National Wii Golf Tournament

Even 80-year-olds are taking part in national videogame tournaments these days.

As videogames get older, and us with them, I've often wondered when it will be considered normal for every single age group to take part in a hardcore gaming habit. It turns out, those days are here right now, as teams of senior citizens recently competed in a national Wii [http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Sports-Resort-Black-Nintendo/dp/B003EH0BQ4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1280614526&sr=8-3] golf tournament.

This wasn't a casual tournament either: Teams of four from all over the U.S. had to submit their best Wii Sports golf scores to the National Senior League Summer Open Wii Golf Tournament, with only the top 10 qualifying for the championship.

Harry Sanger, Bill Taylor, Dolly Fyffe, and Jen DeRus from the Parc at Duluth retirement community in Duluth, Georgia came out on top with a score of 7-under-par in a 9-hole match. DeRus enjoys the factors of realism thrown into Wii Sports golf, saying: "You feel like you're out on the golf course when you're here, but it's a lot easier. You still have to judge distance and wind speed and clubs and everything."

The team members' ages range from 78 to 89, and they even talk trash on each other. "I don't know why you keep doubting me all the time," Sanger was overheard saying when the team doubted his advice. "You tell us wrong sometimes," Fyffe quipped back. I do not want to get in the middle of that.

It's nice to know that even if arthritis cripples my body, I'll probably still be able to competitively game when I become an old man. I just hope the tournament uses the Wii Sports Resort [http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Sports-Resort-Nintendo/dp/B001COQW14/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1280614564&sr=1-1] golf version, because I found the original Wii Sports golf game to be terrible. If not, well someone upgrade these senior citizens asap!

My grandmother turns 80 in November. We ("we" being me and my cousins, all in our 20s and 30s) got her playing Super Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube a few years back and now she's got a Wii and loves Nintendo's first-party games on it. She can't wait to have the great-grandkids over these days!

Don't be silly.

They will have starcraft 3 tournaments.

Funny article, but your recent ones are getting a little similar.

Edit: Well I meant I thought this was really similar to the two rapper articles.

Back in my day we didn't have your fancy color games we had one type of gray, you kids these days have new colors like brown and different types of gray. We will have pokemon, starcraft, and golden eye tournaments.

I certainly hope so, too. Everything in the original Wii Sports was at least decent, but the golf was unplayably bad, mostly because it wasn't sensitive enough for putting in particular. Or maybe if they're using the original, that's what got all the old folks worked up enough to start talking trash...

So where was the trash talking?

Didn't see any... the two quote were as far from trash talking as even a 80 year old could get.

I wanna see a 80 year old say "my house *****..."

My friend sucks hes never got above second place and dad rags and rags on him. *we take turns cause hes a ***** long story* but i get first with 10 deaths. Friend goes again gets last. I get first again. Friend goes again gets 4th i go again get second. Whole time dads raggin him and saying im good blah blah blah. Friend goes you think your so good you play it. Dad says ok and starts playing. Note before i name the score my dad hasnt played a video game *except for a computer tank game he owned* since i played Goldeneye007 for the N64 when it first came out. Dad gets 25 kills 0 deaths. friends speechless i am to but laughing my ass off dad calls him a ***** and leaves. and note my father is a giant of a man who makes sailors wet their pants like school girls when he cusses and insults people

Somehow, that's endearing.

Old people doing such stuff, as a physiotherapist I can get behind it.

Ironically, it was when the controller rocketed out of one of their hands and hit another woman. They forgot to use the Wiimote condoms.

This is a good idea, give all the Wii's to older people who lack coordination and didn't grow up in a computer age, and then make games that ARE ACTUALLY GOOD for younger people.

Thats just brilliant!

Btw, the skills u acquired in your youth, you never forget even when u get older. Just think if you can pwn some n00b faces in Halo, you can still pwn some n00b faces 60 years from now, assuming some1 can and will play with u on that relic console! XD
