Treyarch is a competent developer in its own right, but has largely been in the shadow of Infinity Ward for the most part. Branching out in a new direction - not just for the company but for the series as a whole - would be a chance for the Treyarch team to strut its stuff without (quite so many of) the endless comparisons to the IW games.
Personally I like how CoD4-CoD5 went. I kind of feel that Treyarch is a good company, just not as great as Infinity Ward, and I think it's neat to see them sort of take what Infinity Ward did with their latest title and give it a new feel. CoD5 was quite a bit different than CoD4 but a lot of the main ideas were still there, and I thought it was fresh and exciting while still giving that familiar CoD feel. Now MW2 brings a lot of new features to the table, and I'd like to see Treyarch take another point in history - the Vietnam War is a fine example, and there's a lot more to choose from - and just rework what Infinity Ward did. Give us new kill streaks, show up some new weapons with various advantaged and disadvantages, give us a game that looks new. But, when you get right down to it, have the core of that game still be very, very similar.
That isn't to say I don't think or don't want Treyarch to try and be better than Infinity Ward, I just don't see it happening. By all means, if they make a game that is far different from MW2 and it's just as exciting (if not more) then I will love it to bits. I'm just not entirely sure it's worth the risk for Treyarch - as I said, I'd be content with a "Modern Warfare 2.5" of sorts.
