TRON: Legacy Director Talks Sequel(s)

The director of TRON: Legacy discusses the story options for a possible franchise over multiple films.

By now, most of you have seen TRON: Legacy and, if you haven't, you probably should if only for the eye-candy and the funky electronica soundtrack. Fans of the original 1982 film may have picked up a on a few of the threads that director Joe Kosinski added in order to keep the story going even after the conclusion of the film. Kosinski isn't coming out and saying that he's busy making a sequel, that depends on how TRON: Legacy fares at the box office, but he certainly knows what he might do if given the chance.

"I think the point of view of the studio is, obviously they want TRON: Legacy to be a success," Kosinski said. "And at that point we'll start looking at if and how the story can be continued. We're certainly not taking anything for granted at this point."

From here on out, I should make sure that you know that there be SPOILERS HERE.

In the first few scenes of TRON: Legacy, there is a cameo by Cillian Murphy, who you may recognize as Scarecrow from Batman Begins, playing Ed Dillinger Jr, the son of the 1982 film's major villain. Murphy's turn as the computer genius is the perfect detail for a possible continuation of his role in future films and that was one of Kosinski's goals in having him appear in the TRON: Legacy.

"For the fans of the first film, we all know there's that Dillinger storyline that's hanging out there and I don't think we could have just completely ignored it," he said. "Even though it's not the main story point of our film by any means, we all liked the idea of continuing the Dillinger legacy, [which] is only hinted at for the hardcore fans at this point.

"Obviously if we were lucky enough to go back to the world of TRON on another one, that's a great, little branch that we've left ourselves to grab onto if we choose to."

Then there's the program TRON himself, originally played by Bruce Boxleitner, and the reveal that he is still active and under Clu's control. At the end of Legacy, he falls into some water, seemingly no longer functioning, but then he begins to glow blue. Color being so important on the Grid, it's possible to make the leap that TRON is alive.

"I think the TRON character himself - again, not the primary story of our film, but definitely that storyline is in there - that would be another one that would be interesting for me to explore what's become of him in the future," Kosinski said.

So we don't know for certain if the TRON story will continue with more films, but, if it did, Kosinski has a few threads that he can use to advance the story. Perhaps the sequels will not have so thin of a plot and offer more than just a pretty 3D experience with some Daft Punk background music.

Never again, i payed for 3D tron all i got was 2D but if you take off the glasses the screen is fuzzy.
And the damn story was just bad. The whole plot We need to get out, then they spend the whole movie trying to get out(by get out i mean they keep moving to the exit) with no other story elements attached

Wow, just a week old and already sequels planned. Couldn't get any quicker could you? (Unless your name is Activision and just released a Call of Duty game...)

Tron: Legacy was the best two-hour Daft Punk music video ever. But I really didn't care for that hackneyed, paint-by-numbers story. The more I thought about it afterward, the more I wondered exactly what I was supposed to care about in that movie. I'm really puzzled that a film with so much rambling dialogue and exposition explained so little of what was going on.

I did tend to smile any time (real) Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, or Daft Punk were on the screen, however.

I disagree with sequels for this franchise. Please, just let it be done now. Tron is one of my favorite movies and Legacy was so good too. Don't pull a Pirates of the Caribbean with Tron, Disney. Please, I beg you, don't do it.

That's an awesome way of putting it x3 The film just wouldn't be the same without that soundtrack.

I really hope they involve Tron more.
You know, what with him being the TITLE CHARACTER!
Saying that, the few scenes he was in *were* great (in my opinion).

So THAT was why Cillian Murphy was in the movie. When I saw it he just seemed really out of place, a relatively big name actor with around 55 seconds of screen time. Also I knew I recognised his characters name, but I couldn't put my finger on where I heard it before.

Rather clever I guess.

Please Disney, don't turn Tron into another Pirates! Especially with a series of two films that were just ok. The first Tron's storyline was kinda bland, but it had that whole "what is it like in a computer" thing going for it. Tron: Legacy didn't, and it could have been greatly improved with some more dialogue at key points.

[Spoiler/] When Sam and Quorra are talking about the real world in Kevin's hideout, a few more sentences would have really cemented the fact that Quorra wanted to get out and experience the real world. As it is, she just came across as very curious. [/Spoiler]

Also, some longer actions scenes in the middle would have been nice. Seriously, we get two big scenes at the beginning, a couple sprinklings during the middle, then three intense scenes at the end again. You could have extended at least one of the middle scenes out, but I'm just nit-picking now.

Overall, it was an enjoyable film and I'd love to see a sequel (if only to make sure the cameos didn't go to waste) with more in-depth dialogue, so we better understand character motivations and what's going on, and more intense action scenes. Just don't make a franchise of four or five bad films.

The script/story/characters was fantastic, I'm getting tired of the complaints about it. Everything about the film basically hit the mark completely (only complaint was basically the handling of Trons character).

There will be at least one, if not two sequels, guaranteed. I for one am greatly awaiting what happens next and have been a fan of the original film for years.

Sounds good to me! Legacy improved on almost everything the first had to offer and wound up being the one of the best movies of the year. Can't wait for the sequel.

I KNEW this was coming!

The story set up far, FAR too many awesome points (Dillinger, freedom of information, morality of corporate profit, ethics of AI) which were just brushed under the rug. I assumed that just like the recent "Alice" remake, all of the possibly subversive (read: interesting) themes were given the Disney scrub.

Nice to see the director DOES want to address them. Let's hope Disney lets them.

I think I agree with this. I liked Tron: Legacy for the beautiful costume and set designs as well as the soundtrack, but with all these threads still whipping in the wind (as well as the whole 'what the hell is up with Tron turning blue in the water, and can programs even drown? questions') I think I'd like another sequel.

I just hope that if they do they get some more character development in there and another Daft Punk soundtrack.

The whole movie was a bunch of sequel branches. Too bad a bunch of branches doesn't make a tree.

Tron: Legacy was not a bad movie, wasn't great but still quite entertaining, if there is going to a sequel it's most welcome, just spend more time on the script, keep the composer and Olivia Wilde and you will be on the right track.

I really liked Tron: Legacy. It fixed most of the problems of the original and served up a damn fun time at the movies.

That being said, there were lots of problems (some pacing issues and a paper thin story) that I think a sequel could, and should, fix. As long as the original spirit is still there and we don't get another "Pirates..." (and I didn't even like the first "Pirates...") then I'm more than happy for them to give it one more shot.

They better keep Daft Punk on for soundtrack though! Seriously, that soundtrack ruled!

I hate to say this, but all of these statements Kosinski said make him sound so damn desperate to scrape enough plot together to conjure a pathetic excuse for a sequel. That said, I cannot wait for more Daft Punk and scenery porn.
