Technically the article suggests some tax was paid.
I think paying some tax (even if a small amount) could help people feel more invested. It wouldn't have to be much.

Also technically Trump could have paid a lot of tax and then got most of it refunded too.
If I understand the NYT article correctly (I am not a tax expert), he actually paid millions, was found upon filing to owe either $750 or nothing, and then declined the refund opting to pay it forward to future taxes.

Trump doesn't give a shit about his base. To him they're disgusting, muddy, stupid peasants whom he wants nowhere near him or his luxurious palaces like Mar-a-Lago. They're the losers who put themselves in harms way for their country. They're rubes. Fools to pack stadia and cheer him, and turn out to vote for him on empty promises. Trump has one, big skill: he can spot a sucker a mile off and trick them into handing over their money (or in this case, votes).

This is truly the saddest thing about the Trump base. They put so much stock in a man who has nothing but contempt for them in return.
Yeah, this is nonsense and you're really losing it over Trump. You think the guy who played himself in the WWE hates muddy stupid peasants? Wat? Like, you've really just invented a version of Trump in your mind that has nothing to do with reality.

Were this correct, the Legacy media would not be in all out war with him. They are.
Yes, he has played the game. It's what they do. But he isn't following their script (see China policy changes for example) and they are pissed.
If he's an outsider then why is literally every Republican happy to go along with everything he does? Even the ones who's wives he called ugly are willing to overlook it because they support literally everything he does.

The "legacy media" plays to the crowd. Electoral colleges might make it possible for less popular candidate to win but ad revenue still relies on raw numbers. That's why the "legacy media" will focus more on the dumb offensive shit that he does rather than the stuff that's actually damaging to society. They know they're sabotaging attempts to discredit him. The "legacy media"sfree publicity played a huge role in getting him elected. In the first place. You have to either believe that everyone in the media failed to grasp that or accept that they did it on purpose. The "legacy media" has to pretend that there's any side opposed to neoliberalism and corporate welfare. Trump is still very happy to give all your money to billionaires. And has been doing it all this time. He is as corrupt as any president you've ever had, he's just less subtle about what a garbage person he is.

Did you see Michael Moore's 3 minute cut of "Trumpland"? In context, he is saying voting for Trump may feel good for a few days, but as his regime gets underway, that feeling will go away.
It is accidentally the most electric pro-politician speech I have ever seen.
Did that good feeling go away?
In another thread, I posted the exuberance still in Trump's base. That when it doesn't even matter, he got a ton of primary votes matching all votes for all Dems combined. He keeps saying, "Promises made, promises kept."
Immigration;
The Economy;
That he should win the Nobel Peace Prize for being the most anti war POTUS since maybe Eisenhower;
No more hallucinating Judges;
Improve our international trade deals;
and more.
I've thought the guy has problems since the 1980s he went on a talk show to say he wrote "Art of the Deal" in part to let some people know they should never bother to even try. But his actions as POTUS get him better than average marks.
Sounds like this, "Trump used US tax law for best results to himself" story will not have legs.

You still have a lot of high profile "never Trumpers" in the Republican party. Some spoke for the DNC. In fact, the DNC seemed to want to woo them more than their own Bernie Bro wing.
There's also word of a "Pied Piper" effort by HRC and her obedient legacy media subordinates. They wanted Trump to win the Republican Primary as they thought he'd be easy to beat. Whoops.
Was it MSNBC or CNN they caught with reporters complaining that higher ups would not even allow them to do stories unless they were bashing Trump?
It's not all bad.
Under Obama, an obedient legacy media slumbered as he won the Nobel prize while upping international wars, weaponized the IRS as a political weapon, is now involved in the FBI weaponization scandal. At least with Trump, they're doing their watch dog job.

Well, here's an actual tax expert to help you figure it out.

Don't confuse relentless self-promotion with respecting the people he's selling himself to. You don't have to like or respect anyone you do business with.

Trump has a completely transactional and self-centred view of the world. Fighting and dying for your country is something he just doesn't understand - it makes a person a "loser" in his eyes. It's about amassing power, fame, and money. What do most of his voters have of any of these? Next to nothing. So they're beneath his notice, unless he needs to gee them up for money and votes. Do you think Trump cares about or wants to socialise with you? Of course he doesn't, and he never will.

You can resent it all you want, you know deep down who you are. To flip genre momentarily, we all know deep down that we're Hufflepuffs.

Once again, someone has wandered into the "He's an evil mastermind, just an incompetent evil mastermind!" He hasn't amassed wealth or power, he's losing money and losing his friends in high places to be replaced by the sprawling masses. He also says publicly that he's losing billions, and that he hates the elites and loves the poorly educated. His words and his circumstances in these regards are a perfect match. Why do you assume that he's a liar who just happens to suck so much his lies become truth by accident? That's not a logical explanation.

I don't think Trump has had many real friends. Not only is it clear he doesn't consider people as his friends when you look how he treats them once they dare to contradict him, but since people tend to associate with people who are alike the people around him are likely as uninterested in friendship as Trump. These are likely just opportunistic relations based on the belief they will yield mutual benefit. So there isn't any sacrifice to be found there.

As for his massive losses? Well he made losses well before becoming President and he sure as hell has used his presidency to boost the income of his properties. And considering Trump refuses to reveal anything with regards to his income there is no way for anyone to know how much he has sacrificed. Your president's own opacity is making your claim 100% baseless. Ask him to release his tax returns! Ask for some transparency! Why are you so willing to believe the words of a proven liar and opportunist instead of asking for evidence? Isn't purposely witholding facts a sign of potential guilt? He has no valid excuses not to release his tax returns. A tax audit is a bullshit excuse, especially if it's used for 4 years.

<sigh> He is bad at some things, and good at others. Given that describes just about everyone on the planet, I don't understand why you have such trouble comprehending it.

He hasn't amassed wealth or power, he's losing money and losing his friends in high places to be replaced by the sprawling masses.
Really? The billionaire president of the USA has not amassed power and wealth? Do you want to reconsider that claim?

Trump is (as mentioned) a narcissist with a transactional view of the world. He wants admiration, respect, and he expects much of that through his money and power. He doesn't have empathy, and he doesn't understand all manner of values you and I do. As he believes so much in money and power himself, so a key measure of other people to him is their money and power. If you are not rich and powerful, you are loser.

Narcissists like him don't have friends, they have people who are useful to them. And Trump will always have people to mix with and be useful to him: he's rich and powerful.

He also says publicly that he's losing billions, and that he hates the elites and loves the poorly educated. His words and his circumstances in these regards are a perfect match. Why do you assume that he's a liar who just happens to suck so much his lies become truth by accident? That's not a logical explanation.
At a rally Trump said that being president is "probably costing me from 3 to 5 billion" dollars. Firstly, Trump's losses are plainly not due to being president. They're crappy golf course investments he's been losing money on for years and years. So that's a lie. Secondly, Trump's entire assets are valued at about 3-5 billion... except by Trump, who claims he's worth about $10 billion. So that's a lie, too, he's clearly lost nothing like that much. So I don't need to assume it's a lie, the evidence shows so.

The idea Trump hates the elites is hilarious. If he hated them that much, he wouldn't have appointed so many to White House positions and given them a great big tax cut (and corporate tax cut) that he didn't have to. Who do you think he's hob-nobbing with at Mar-a-Lago, paying massive fees to get in ($2000 a night, $200,000 membership)? Do you think it's people like you and me? As Gorfias noted, the minute he arrived in the White House, out went the likes of Bannon and in came the Goldman Sachs execs. And we all know how much those guys hate the elites, eh?

This is hilariously false and we've known so for 4 years now. It's literally in the wikipedia page....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_returns_of_Donald_Trump#Refusal_to_release_tax_returns_during_2016_presidential_campaign said:
Later that month, Trump falsely claimed that he could not release his tax returns because he was under audit.[8][a] However, nothing prevents a taxpayer from releasing his own tax returns; the IRS has confirmed that individuals are free to share their own tax information,[54][59][60]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_returns_of_Donald_Trump#cite_note-65 and prior to Trump's election, every president from Richard Nixon onward voluntarily released his tax returns annually, even though the IRS has, since the 1970s, conducted an automatically annual audits of the tax returns of presidents and vice presidents.[54]

Well the other obvious answer is he's waiting to release them when it becomes worth it.
I mean it's what keeps happening to cover up scandals. In this case the allegations of ballot collecting for money by certain individuals is being cover up with a story about Trump's supposed taxes.

Once again, someone has wandered into the "He's an evil mastermind, just an incompetent evil mastermind!"
I would argue Trump is indeed an incompetent mastermind. That Trump succeeded in politics was despite Trump rather than because of Trump. Compared to even his populist or authoritarian peers Trump stands out as notably incompetent. Wilders, Farage, Le Pen, Putin all have at least certain traits that might have convinced people of their merit, but Trump is an outright cartoon character. He never managed to hide that he was incompetent, he never managed to hide he was corrupt and he never managed to hide he was malicious. On some level even Trump's supporters know this.

I think its the extreme corruption within the Republican party and their part of the electorate that helped Trump rise to power. His standard populist spiel would have already garnered him some votes, and his abilities as a conman obviously help to some extent, but he was primarily lucky enough to run in an election years where enough people were fed up with the establishment that they were willing to support anyone or anything that was able to give Clinton a bad day. He was also lucky enough that he ran an election cycle where the Republicans were both extremely frustrated by the Obama years as well as in the process of shedding whatever ethics they had left so after some hesitation they too would support anyone or anything that could give the Democrats a bad day.

Trump is no competent mastermind. In any other time things like Ukraine would have necked him, saying he liked to grab woman by the pussy would have necked him and he would have been written off as a joke. Rather than being competent he just got lucky to run in a political climate that was hugely beneficial to any populist. Even his present scheme to con his way into a second term even if he loses the election isn't him being the only president clever enough to think of it, but rather him being the only president amoral enough to go through with it.

Also even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.
I reckon they probably disproportionately die of starvation or predation though. Maybe even just hibernation starvation because they (blindly) didn't find enough nuts so they waste away over winter. I'm not squirrel vetinarian, so I don't know the exact details.

I'm not a squirrel yet either, so I can't really confirm or deny the abilities of squirrels, blind or otherwise, but I reckon I could taken one in a fight, assuming it was blind and I wasn't, but if it ran away it would probably escape.
