Can we talk about how journalist are just using police statements as their news articles on events?

could, but what would be the point? The mass media does this for the same reason it always uses passive voice to describe police brutality: naked, self-serving, "manufacture consent for the status quo by any means necessary on behalf of our oligarch overlords" copaganda. Remember cops deliberately targeted members of the press covering protests back in June, 2020, and even
that wasn't enough to shake the media out of its self-imposed ethical torpor.
